Recessions and Financial Disruptions in Emerging Markets: A Bird´s Eye View.
This paper provides an overview of the implications of recession and financial disruption episodes in emerging markets. We report three major findings. First, compared to advanced countries, recessions and financial disruptions in emerging markets are often more costly. Second, recessions associated with financial disruption episodes, such as credit crunches, equity price busts and financial crises, tend to be deeper than other recessions in emerging markets. Third, the temporal dynamics of macroeconomic and financial variables around these episodes in emerging markets are different than those in advanced countries. Mechanics of bundled semiflexible polymer networks
While actin bundles are used by living cells for structural fortification,
the microscopic origin of the elasticity of bundled networks is not understood.
Here, we show that above a critical concentration of the actin binding protein
fascin, a solution of actin filaments organizes into a pure network of bundles.
While the elasticity of weakly crosslinked networks is dominated by the affine
deformation of tubes, the network of bundles can be fully understood in terms

A push-pull unsymmetrical subphthalocyanine dimer
Unsymmetrical subphthalocyanine fused dimers have been prepared from appropriate ortho-dinitrile SubPc precursors. In particular, either electron-donating or electron-accepting substituents have been introduced on each SubPc constituent unit, resulting in unprecedented push–pull π-extended curved aromatic macrocycles. From fluorescence experiments in solvents of different polarity we conclude a dual fluorescence, namely a delocalized singlet excited state (1.73 eV) and a polarized charge transfer state (<1.7 eV). Pump probe experiments corroborate the dual nature of the fluorescence. On one hand, the delocalized singlet excited state gives rise to a several nanosecond lasting intersystem crossing yielding the corresponding triplet excited state. On the other hand, the polarized charge transfer state deactivates within a few picosesonds. Visualization of the charge transfer state was accomplished by means of molecular modeling with a slight polarization of the HOMO towards the electron donor and of the LUMO towards the electron acceptor
Entropy of water and the temperature-induced stiffening of amyloid networks
In water, networks of semi-flexible fibrils of the protein -synuclein
stiffen significantly with increasing temperature. We make plausible that this
reversible stiffening is a result of hydrophobic contacts between the fibrils
that become more prominent with increasing temperature. The good agreement of
our experimentally observed temperature dependence of the storage modulus of
the network with a scaling theory linking network elasticity with reversible
crosslinking enables us to quantify the endothermic binding enthalpy and an
estimate the effective size of hydrophobic patches on the fibril surface.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
