    On random primitive sets, directable NDFAs and the generation of slowly synchronizing DFAs

    We tackle the problem of the randomized generation of slowly synchronizing deterministic automata (DFAs) by generating random primitive sets of matrices. We show that when the randomized procedure is too simple the exponent of the generated sets is O(n log n) with high probability, thus the procedure fails to return DFAs with large reset threshold. We extend this result to random nondeterministic automata (NDFAs) by showing, in particular, that a uniformly sampled NDFA has both a 2-directing word and a 3-directing word of length O(n log n) with high probability. We then present a more involved randomized algorithm that manages to generate DFAs with large reset threshold and we finally leverage this finding for exhibiting new families of DFAs with reset threshold of order Ω(n2/4) \Omega(n^2/4) .Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1805.0672

    On the Effects of an Installed Propeller Slipstream on Wing Aerodynamic Characteristics

    This work presents an experimental study of the effect of an installed propeller slipstream on a wing boundary layer. The main objective was to analyse through wind tunnel experiments the effect of the propeller slipstream on the wing boundary layer characteristics such as: laminar flow extension and transition, laminar separation bubbles and reattachment and turbulent separation. Two propeller/wing configurations were studied: pusher and tractor. Experimental work was performed using two different models: a two-dimensional wing with a central cylindrical nacelle for the tractor configuration, and a simple two-dimensional wing with a downstream propeller for the pusher tests. The relative position between propeller and wing could be changed in the pusher model, and a total of 7 positions were analysed. For the tractor tests the relative propeller/wing was fixed, but three different propellers: two, three and four bladed were tested. Measurements included pressure distribution, hot wire anemometry and boundary layer characteristics by flow visualisation. The results showed that the pusher propeller inflow affects the wing characteristics by changing the lift, drag, and also delays the boundary layer transition and separation. These effects are highly dependent on the relative position of the wing/propeller. On the other hand, the tractor propeller slipstream induces transition and its effect is dependent on the number of blades

    Nora, having finished drinking her milk, tosses her sippy-cup to the side. At first she doesn\u27t see the casual stream of milk that has been strewn across the black wool carpet, but as you can imagine it does not escape her for long. Imagine the look on her face as she discovers that she can control the amount and pattern of the milk on the floor. She begins to tap the tip of the cup on the carpet watching the white spots this creates. As pools of white are formed she takes her fingers and drags them across the rug creating streaks of white. I imagine that the first artists who were creating drawings and paintings on stone surfaces had the same sense of wonder and delight that Nora had in creating her milk drawing . The magic of art is that it exists in all of us and has since the beginning of time. By the time we are grown adults the world has told us that we are not artists but doctors or mathematicians or teachers, but I would argue that we are all in fact still artists and that art is essential to everything we do. Many scholars say art is what makes us human. In this age, it would seem that it i s hard to recognize the importance of art education. When school budgets are cut, special subjects- including art programs- are among the first to see the effects . If, however, art is essential to our being human, we will always have art, and we will always have artists- even when school programs are cut. The struggle is to find an argument for art training that indicates a greater good for all society

    The worldwide burden of snakebite is high and venomous snakes are found in many regions of the world and are a threat to public health. In Italy, for instance, viper bites are an infrequent but not negligible event. Although people who have been bitten by a snake rarely wish to donate blood within a "short" time, it is however important to evaluate their eligibility to donate blood or blood components as their donation could be a problem for donor management, especially if a specific policy is not in place. The aim of this manuscript is to summarise the worldwide existing donor deferral policy for snakebites and to provide some indications in order to facilitate decision-making and to guarantee maximum safety for the donors as well as for the recipients

    Microscopic black hole detection in UHECR: the double bang signature

    According to recent conjectures on the existence of large extra dimensions in our universe, black holes may be produced during the interaction of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays with the atmosphere. However, and so far, the proposed signatures are based on statistical effects, not allowing identification on an event by event basis, and may lead to large uncertainties. In this note, events with a double bang topology, where the production and instantaneous decay of a microscopic black hole (first bang) is followed, at a measurable distance, by the decay of an energetic tau lepton (second bang) are proposed as an almost background free signature. The characteristics of these events and the capability of large cosmic ray experiments to detect them are discussed.Comment: revised version, 5 figure
