    Cancer profiles by affinity propagation

    The affinity propagation algorithm is applied to a problem of breast cancer subtyping using traditional biologic markers. The algorithm provides a procedure to determine the number of profiles to be considered. A well know breast cancer case series was used to compare the results of the affinity propagation with the results obtained with standard algorithms and indexes for the optimal choice of the number of clusters. Results from affinity propagation are consistent with the results already obtained having the advantage of providing an indication about the number of clusters

    In this case-report, the Authors show the case of a sudden death occurred in a 38-year-old woman submitted to surgical excision of a right acoustic neurinoma. At the autopsy, was detected a cerebral hemorrhage with multifocal localization by a ruptured rare fungal aneurysm of the Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Arthery (PICA). The PCR analysis, carried out on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue, identified the Aspergillus Penicillioides as the involved pathogen. We discuss the main points of infectious aneurysms, being a potential neurosurgical complication

    Technical note: Preparation improvement of charred cadaveric viscera using sandison’s rehydrating solution for histological analysis

    In forensic evaluation of charred corpses, internal detrimental signs may result as more significant of those observed during external examination and is often arduous to state if a victim was exposed to fire before or after death. When the histological analysis of the remaining internal viscera is necessary, the massive destruction caused by the lesion, the charring and the coarctation of the samples don't allow to give further information or to determine the remaining organic components of the viscera. This limit is determined by the intrinsic characteristics of this thermal lesivity of self-maintenance even after the exitus of the subject, worsening the initial detrimental framework. The Authors, with the purpose of improving the microscopic visualization of the samples collected from cadavers with peculiar deterioration, as in case of carbonization, suggest the use of a specific technical protocol based on the use of Sandison's rehydrating solution since the samples treated with this solution showed, at microscopic examination, a substantial histological-morphological improvement

    Clustering breast cancer data by consensus of different validity indices

    Clustering algorithms will, in general, either partition a given data set into a pre-specified number of clusters or will produce a hierarchy of clusters. In this paper we analyse several different clustering techniques and apply them to a particular data set of breast cancer data. When we do not know a priori which is the best number of groups, we use a range of different validity indices to test the quality of clustering results and to determine the best number of clusters. While for the K-means method there is not absolute agreement among the indices as to which is the best number of clusters, for the PAM algorithm all the indices indicate 4 as the best cluster number

    The banning of the heavy metal thallium (Tl) in many Countries, because of its toxicity, led to a remarkable reduction of the number of cases of poisoning both accidental and homicidal forcing us to better study the pharmacokinetics of this poison using new technologies. The Authors, in this work, are reporting the case of a collective thallium toxicosis caused by voluntary adulteration of an infusion with thallium sulfate, occurred in 8 members of the same familial nucleus; the administration of Prussian Blu resulted to be ineffective for 3 of these members that died at a later time. The most peculiar aspects of this rare manner of poisoning are discussed; the analytical procedures used, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) in particular, resulted to be fundamental in the forensic diagnosis process of acute poisoning cause by thallium

    Investigation on Dabigatran Etexilate and Worsening of Renal Function in Patients with Atrial fibrillation : the IDEA Study

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Warfarin-related nephropathy is an unexplained acute kidney injury, and may occur in patients with supratherapeutic INR, in the absence of overt bleeding. Similar findings have been observed in rats treated with dabigatran etexilate. We conducted a prospective study in dabigatran etexilate-treated patients to assess the incidence of dabigatran-related nephropathy and to investigate the possible correlation between dabigatran plasma concentration (DPC) and worsening renal function. METHOD: One hundred and seven patients treated long term with dabigatran etexilate for non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) were followed up for 90 days. DPC, serum creatinine (SCr) and serum cystatin C were prospectively measured. Ninety five patients had complete follow-up data and were evaluable for primary endpoint. RESULTS: Eleven patients had supratherapeutic DPC, defined as DPC higher than 200 ng/ml at study enrolment, but at the end of follow-up no patient showed a persistent increase in SCr. No patients experienced acute kidney injury. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that no persistent renal detrimental effect is associated with dabigatran treatment. An increase in SCr during dabigatran treatment is reversible and it seems to be unrelated to dabigatran itself
