    Pedoforms mapping at the Águas Emendadas ecological station, Distrito Federal, Brazil.

    The great urban and rural development of the Distrito Federal (Federal Administrative District) in Brazil over the last 50 years has led to disordered land use and land occupation. To assess the current environmental scenario, detailed surveys of the available natural resources, especially soils, are required. The objective of this work was to evaluate the soils-landscape relations in a representative area of the region, the Águas Emendadas Ecological Station, and map its soil forms (pedoforms) using geotechnologies. The geographical distribution of the soils in the regional landscape was modelled according to the geological, geomorphological and pedological relations observed in the field. Based on this model, the available geological and eomorphological maps of the Distrito Federal, along with the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and slope classification map produced in this work, were used to map the pedoforms. For the scale used in this work, the resulting pedoforms map was considered adequate and can subsidize detailed soil studies and environmental planning

    Influence of initial severity of depression on effectiveness of low intensity interventions: Meta-analysis of individual patient data

Design Meta-analysis of individual patient data from 16 datasets comparing low intensity interventions with usual care. Setting Primary care and community settings. Participants 2470 patients with depression. Interventions Low intensity interventions for depression (such as guided self help by means of written materials and limited professional support, and internet delivered interventions). Main outcome measures Depression outcomes (measured with the Beck Depression Inventory or Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale), and the effect of initial depression severity on the effects of low intensity interventions. Results Although patients were referred for low intensity interventions, many had moderate to severe depression at baseline. We found a significant interaction between baseline severity and treatment effect (coefficient −0.1 (95% CI −0.19 to −0.002)), suggesting that patients who are more severely depressed at baseline demonstrate larger treatment effects than those who are less severely depressed. However, the magnitude of the interaction (equivalent to an additional drop of around one point on the Beck Depression Inventory for a one standard deviation increase in initial severity) was small and may not be clinically significant. Conclusions The data suggest that patients with more severe depression at baseline show at least as much clinical benefit from low intensity interventions as less severely depressed patients and could usefully be offered these interventions as part of a stepped care model.UK National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) School for Primary Care ResearchMedical Research Counci

    New approach to detect seismic surface waves in 1Hz-sampled GPS time series

    Recently, co-seismic seismic source characterization based on GPS measurements has been completed in near- and far-field with remarkable results. However, the accuracy of the ground displacement measurement inferred from GPS phase residuals is still depending of the distribution of satellites in the sky. We test here a method, based on the double difference (DD) computations of Line of Sight (LOS), that allows detecting 3D co-seismic ground shaking. The DD method is a quasi-analytically free of most of intrinsic errors affecting GPS measurements. The seismic waves presented in this study produced DD amplitudes 4 and 7 times stronger than the background noise. The method is benchmarked using the GEONET GPS stations recording the Hokkaido Earthquake (2003 September 25th, Mw = 8.3)

    A T-cell antigen atlas for meningioma: novel options for immunotherapy

    Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumors. Although most symptomatic cases can be managed by surgery and/or radiotherapy, a relevant number of patients experience an unfavorable clinical course and additional treatment options are needed. As meningiomas are often perfused by dural branches of the external carotid artery, which is located outside the blood-brain barrier, they might be an accessible target for immunotherapy. However, the landscape of naturally presented tumor antigens in meningioma is unknown. We here provide a T-cell antigen atlas for meningioma by in-depth profiling of the naturally presented immunopeptidome using LC-MS/MS. Candidate target antigens were selected based on a comparative approach using an extensive immunopeptidome data set of normal tissues. Meningioma-exclusive antigens for HLA class I and II are described here for the first time. Top-ranking targets were further functionally characterized by showing their immunogenicity through in vitro T-cell priming assays. Thus, we provide an atlas of meningioma T-cell antigens which will be publicly available for further research. In addition, we have identified novel actionable targets that warrant further investigation as an immunotherapy option for meningioma

    Protocol for a randomised controlled trial investigating self-help email messages for sub-threshold depression: the Mood Memos study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sub-threshold depression is common, impairs functioning, and increases the risk of developing major depression. Although psychological treatments have been investigated for sub-threshold depression, they are costly. A less costly alternative could be an educational health promotion campaign about effective self-help for depression symptoms. The aim of the study is to test the efficacy of a low-cost email-based mental health promotion campaign in changing self-help behaviour and preventing more severe depression in adults with sub-threshold depression.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>The project is a randomised controlled trial of an automated preventive email-intervention aimed at people with sub-threshold depression. Adults aged 18+ with sub-threshold depression (as measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9), who are not already receiving professional treatment for depression, are eligible for admission to the study. Internet users will sign up via the study website <url>http://www.moodmemos.com</url> and be randomly allocated to receive emails twice weekly for six weeks containing either self-help coping advice or general information about depression as a control. Outcomes will be assessed at the start, midpoint, and end of the intervention, as well as six months later. Outcomes assessed include symptoms, incidence of major depression, psychological distress, social and occupational functioning, coping strategies, and coping self-efficacy. The primary hypothesis is that the Mood Memo emails containing coping strategies will reduce depression symptoms and be better at preventing major depression than the control emails that contain general information about depression.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Promotion of actions an individual can take to prevent physical disease is a technique often used in public health.     Identification and characterization of antibacterial compound(s) of cockroaches (Periplaneta americana)

    Infectious diseases remain a significant threat to human health, contributing to more than 17 million deaths, annually. With the worsening trends of drug resistance, there is a need for newer and more powerful antimicrobial agents. We hypothesized that animals living in polluted environments are potential source of antimicrobials. Under polluted milieus, organisms such as cockroaches encounter different types of microbes, including superbugs. Such creatures survive the onslaught of superbugs and are able to ward off disease by producing antimicrobial substances. Here, we characterized antibacterial properties in extracts of various body organs of cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) and showed potent antibacterial activity in crude brain extract against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and neuropathogenic E. coli K1. The size-exclusion spin columns revealed that the active compound(s) are less than 10 kDa in molecular mass. Using cytotoxicity assays, it was observed that pre-treatment of bacteria with lysates inhibited bacteria-mediated host cell cytotoxicity. Using spectra obtained with LC-MS on Agilent 1290 infinity liquid chromatograph, coupled with an Agilent 6460 triple quadruple mass spectrometer, tissues lysates were analyzed. Among hundreds of compounds, only a few homologous compounds were identified that contained isoquinoline group, chromene derivatives, thiazine groups, imidazoles, pyrrole containing analogs, sulfonamides, furanones, flavanones, and known to possess broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, and possess anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour, and analgesic properties. Further identification, characterization and functional studies using individual compounds can act as a breakthrough in developing novel therapeutics against various pathogens including superbugs
