The Role of Inuit Languages in Nunavut Schooling: Nunavut Teachers Talk about Bilingual Education

This article provides a discourse analysis of interview transcripts generated from 10 experienced Nunavut teachers (five Inuit and five non‐Inuit) regarding the role of Inuit languages in Nunavut schooling. Discussion and analysis focus on the motif of bilingual education. Teachers’ talk identified discourse models of “academic truths” and “revitalization,”demonstrating how Nunavut teachers are making efforts to en‐ gage with community to effect lasting educational change. Key words: Aboriginal languages; Nunavut education, language policy, discourse analysis, educational change Cet article présente une analyse de discours à partir de transcriptions d’entrevues auprès de dix enseignantes d’expérience du Nunavut (cinq Inuits et cinq non‐Inuits) au sujet du rôle des langues inuites dans les écoles du Nunavut. Les discussions et analyses portent sur la raison d’être de l’enseignement bilingue. Dans leurs propos, les enseignantes ont identifié des modèles discursifs des « vérités pédagogiques » et de la « revitalisation », démontrant par là comment le personnel enseignant au Nuna‐ vut s’efforcent de travailler de concert avec la communauté pour favoriser des chan‐ gements à long terme dans l’éducation. Crafting a local-global nexus in the Australian wine industry

Abstract: Purpose To examines strategies that have locked the Australian wine industry into a price-sensitive, commodity wine market. The paper seeks to explain the inherent weakness of these strategies and their inability to address current challenges and opportunities. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses empirical research data gathered from 100 SME wine firms. These firms were selected using a stratified random sampling technique. Four states were covered New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia with all major wine regions in these states equally represented. There was careful sampling according to size, so that boutique, and small- and medium-sized firms were represented. Non-exporting firms were excluded. In each case either the CEO or the marketing manager was interviewed. Findings The findings confirm the paper's hypothesis, that increasingly the Australian wine industry has become risk-averse and locked into paradigms and organizational frameworks that are disconnecting from users and their requirements. The findings concur that greater differentiation of place, product, supply chains, and markets is required if the industry is to operate effectively within a multi-dimensional landscape and continue to attract sustainable returns

Artificial Intelligence: Application Today and Implications Tomorrow

This paper analyzes the applications of artificial intelligence to the legal industry, specifically in the fields of legal research and contract drafting. First, it will look at the implications of artificial intelligence (A.I.) for the current practice of law. Second, it will delve into the future implications of A.I. on law firms and the possible regulatory challenges that come with A.I. The proliferation of A.I. in the legal sphere will give laymen (clients) access to the information and services traditionally provided exclusively by attorneys. With an increase in access to these services will come a change in the role that lawyers must play. A.I. is a tool that will increase access to cheaper and more efficient services, but non-lawyers lack the training to analyze and understand information it puts out. The role of lawyers will change to fill this role, namely utilizing these tools to create a better work product with greater efficiency for their clients

The impact of threat of shock-induced anxiety on the neural substrates of memory encoding and retrieval

Dysfunctional memory processes are widely reported in anxiety disorders but the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms are unclear. Recent work shows the impact of anxiety on memory depends on the context and memory modality. For instance, threat of shock, a translational within-subject anxiety induction, has been shown to impair the encoding of facial stimuli, while improving spatial working memory (WM) accuracy. The present study aimed to delineate the neural circuitry regulating these opposing behavioral effects. Thirty-three healthy volunteers performed the previously assessed facial recognition and a spatial WM tasks inside an fMRI scanner, under alternating within-subject conditions of threat or safe from shock across encoding and retrieval. Facial recognition impairments were replicated when threat was selectively induced at encoding. Neuroimaging results suggest that this effect was driven by increased competition for attentional resources within the anterior cingulate cortex, in which activation correlated positively with stress levels. The impact of threat on spatial WM performance did not, however, replicate in the fMRI environment. Nevertheless, state-dependent hippocampal activation was observed in both tasks. These findings suggest a neurocognitive mechanism by which anxiety impairs facial recognition as well as a state-dependent hippocampal activation pattern which may putatively underline retrieval of negative experiences in anxiety
