A brief mindfulness-based intervention reduces eating disorder symptoms and improves eating self-efficacy and emotion regulation among adults seeking bariatric surgery
Background Up to 64% of bariatric (weight-loss) surgery-seeking adults report eating disorder (ED) symptoms (i.e., binge eating, emotional eating, addictive-like eating, and grazing) that can interfere with surgery outcomes. Well-designed pre-surgical interventions targeting eating behaviours may reduce ED symptoms and protect against suboptimal surgery outcomes.
Objectives Provide proof-of-concept data to inform the design and optimization of a pre-surgical mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) for ED symptoms. Evaluate whether the MBI produces meaningful improvements in ED symptoms and clarify the mechanisms-of-action by which the MBI impacts ED symptoms.
Methods Twenty-one pre-surgical patients with obesity and ED symptoms referred to a MBI completed self-report measures of addictive-like eating, binge eating, emotional eating, grazing, mindful eating, eating self-efficacy, and emotion regulation pre-(T1) and post-(T2) MBI.
Results Repeated-measures ANOVAs revealed improvements in binge eating symptoms (F (1,20) = 30.38, ηp2 = .60, p < .001) and grazing (F (1,20) = 7.57, ηp2 = .28, p = .012), pre- to post-MBI. Adjusting for multiple comparisons, no significant improvements were found for addictive-like eating or emotional eating. Eating self-efficacy (F (1,20) = 29.70, ηp2 = .60, p < .001) and emotion regulation (F (1,20) = 7.18, ηp2 = .26, p = .014) improved, while mindful eating decreased (F (1,20) = 16.25, ηp2 = .45, p = .001), following the MBI. Bivariate correlations found associations between improvements in the mechanism of eating self-efficacy and improvements in the ED symptom of grazing pre- to post-MBI (r = 0.46, p < .05). As well, improvements in emotion regulation were associated with positive changes in binge and emotional eating and grazing (r = 0.55, p < .001, r = 0.66, p < .001, r = 0.61, p < .05, respectively).
Conclusions After participating in the MBI binge eating, grazing, eating self-efficacy, and emotion regulation abilities improved. Further work is needed to understand and mitigate deterioration in mindful eating. Moreover, acceptability and feasibility of the MBI should be assessed prior to testing the MBI in a large-scale efficacy trial. Future research should assess the the impact of this intervention on post-surgery weight-loss, weight-loss maintenance, and maintenance of improvements in ED symptoms
What has finite element analysis taught us about diabetic foot disease and its management?:a systematic review
Over the past two decades finite element (FE) analysis has become a popular tool for researchers seeking to simulate the biomechanics of the healthy and diabetic foot. The primary aims of these simulations have been to improve our understanding of the foot's complicated mechanical loading in health and disease and to inform interventions designed to prevent plantar ulceration, a major complication of diabetes. This article provides a systematic review and summary of the findings from FE analysis-based computational simulations of the diabetic foot.A systematic literature search was carried out and 31 relevant articles were identified covering three primary themes: methodological aspects relevant to modelling the diabetic foot; investigations of the pathomechanics of the diabetic foot; and simulation-based design of interventions to reduce ulceration risk.Methodological studies illustrated appropriate use of FE analysis for simulation of foot mechanics, incorporating nonlinear tissue mechanics, contact and rigid body movements. FE studies of pathomechanics have provided estimates of internal soft tissue stresses, and suggest that such stresses may often be considerably larger than those measured at the plantar surface and are proportionally greater in the diabetic foot compared to controls. FE analysis allowed evaluation of insole performance and development of new insole designs, footwear and corrective surgery to effectively provide intervention strategies. The technique also presents the opportunity to simulate the effect of changes associated with the diabetic foot on non-mechanical factors such as blood supply to local tissues.While significant advancement in diabetic foot research has been made possible by the use of FE analysis, translational utility of this powerful tool for routine clinical care at the patient level requires adoption of cost-effective (both in terms of labour and computation) and reliable approaches with clear clinical validity for decision making
A Composite HST Spectrum of Quasars
We construct a composite quasar spectrum from 284 HST FOS spectra of 101
quasars with redshifts z > 0.33. The spectrum covers the wavelengths between
350 and 3000 A in the rest frame. There is a significant steepening of the
continuum slope around 1050 A. The continuum between 1050 and 2200 A can be
modeled as a power law with alpha = -0.99. For the full sample the power-law
index in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) between 350 and 1050 A is alpha = -1.96.
The continuum flux in the wavelengths near the Lyman limit shows a depression
of about 10 percent. The break in the power-law index and the slight depression
of the continuum near the Lyman limit are features expected in Comptonized

Improving pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas, Thunberg, 1793) production in Mediterranean coastal lagoons: Validation of the growth model “ShellSIM” on traditional and novel farming methods
Bivalve farming is a major European aquaculture activity, representing 48.5% of total biomass produced. Italy is one of the largest consumers of oysters but local production does not meet the market demand. Italy has approximately 384,000 ha of shallow lagoons in its coastal area, already devoted to extensive aquaculture activities, which could also represent potential locations for Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas, Thunberg, 1793) farming. The aim of this study is to enhance Pacific oyster farming in shallow coastal lagoons by testing novel farming technologies and validating an existing bioenergetic growth model (ShellSIM). Commercial performance of Pacific oysters and associated environmental parameters were monitored in two Sardinian coastal lagoons (San Teodoro and Santa Gilla, Italy). Oyster growth and survival were compared during a production cycle for two rearing systems: traditional systems (floating bags or lanterns) and Ortac units. The latter has not been previously tested in coastal lagoons. Measured performances were compared with ShellSIM predictions to evaluate the model's ability to predict growth and the potential production in other coastal lagoons. Competency of midwives in assisting vaginal breech births and associated factors: a cross-sectional study in lower level health facilities of Hoima District, Uganda
Objectives: To assess midwives' competencies in the application of the manoeuvers for a vaginal frank breech delivery and identify factors associated with midwives' competency in delivering a vaginal frank breech.
Methods : A cross-sectional study was conducted among 143 practicing midwives who were recruited consecutively. A 30-item checklist was used to assess the midwives' competence in the application of Pinard, Loveset's, and Mauriceau Smellie Viet manoeuvers. A self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain the associated factors. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze midwives' competence. Crude Odds Ratios and their 95% confidence intervals measured the association.
Results: 87.4% of midwives knew and mentioned a manoeuvre. Slightly half of 72(50.4%) study participants, with a mean score of 12.3 (SD: 2.7), were competent. Competence scores for Pinard, Loveset's, and Mauriceau Smelie Viet manoeuvres were 69.2%, 44.1%, and 30.8% respectively. Midwives who could mention any manoeuvre were 11 times more likely to be competent (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 11.79, 95% CI: 2.23-58.35, P: 0.002). Midwives who felt confident were 5 times more likely to be competent (AOR: 5.95, 95% CI: 1. 23-28.80, P: 0.026).
Conclusion: Overall midwives' competence was average. The majority were competent with the application of Pinard manoeuvre. Lovset and Mauricea Smelie Viet had below-average scores. The significantly associated factors were being able to mention any type of the manoeuvres, and reporting a feeling of confidence. These findings highlight the need for in-service vaginal breech births training, and a hands-on vaginal breech births practice to improve competence.
Recommendations: The health care system should standardize the quality of midwifery practice as stated by the global standard of midwifery practice. Standard guidelines and standard operating procedures should be developed to guide the care practices in health units
Evaporative Mass Loss Measurement as a Quality Control Tool for Quality Assurance in the Manufacture of Inks Suitable for High Speed (≥60 m/min) Printing
In any manufacturing environment, it is always important to be able to embrace a culture of traceability of any non-conformed product. For the case of ink manufacture, operator confusion, leading to the mixing-up of solvents, or connecting the incorrect solvent drum to solvent lines, can lead to disastrous consequences that are not trivial for a quality control/quality assurance team to unravel. Accordingly, simple methods for assessing whether the correct solvents were added in the correct ratios to products empower this QA/QC requirement. In this paper, we examine the use of a trivial measurement of evaporative mass loss as a protocol for validating the conformance of manufactured ink to specification. Inspired by the transport-limit that occurs at ultramicroelectrodes in electrochemistry, we develop theory to analyse evaporation rate measurements, and illustrate how vaporisation at the liquid | gas interface is dominated by a diffusion anisotropy, owing to natural convection for organic solvents, manufactured resins and commercialised inks that have been used, inter alia, for the underground transport tickets in the cities of London and Paris. We further demonstrate that the use of incorrect solvents is readily seen through evaporation rate transients, thereby enabling this measurement for human factor mitigation during the ink manufacture process
Expansion of Access to Healthy Foods for SNAP-Eligible Households to Reduce Food Insecurity Through the Creation of an Accountable Care Community in Cumberland County, North Carolina
The system of food insecurity in Cumberland County, North Carolina does not provide adequate food options to the community. It creates limited access to affordable local produce and impacts households living in poverty that are not maximizing the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, amplifying poor health outcomes. An Accountable Care Community (ACC) will be established in Cumberland County, North Carolina, to address the social determinant of health of economic stability by reducing food insecurity. This will be accomplished through the expansion of access to healthy foods by enacting a policy to allow SNAP benefit purchasing power at local farmers’ markets in the county. The ACC partners include, but are not limited to, the Cumberland County Public Health Department, Cumberland County Department of Social Services, the Fayetteville Farmers’ Market Association, and local vendors and farmers.Master of Public Healt
Molecular Gas in the Host Galaxy of a Quasar at Redshift z=6.42
Observations of the molecular gas phase in quasar host galaxies provide
fundamental constraints on galaxy evolution at the highest redshifts. Molecular
gas is the material out of which stars form; it can be traced by spectral line
emission of carbon--monoxide (CO). To date, CO emission has been detected in
more than a dozen quasar host galaxies with redshifts (z) larger 2, the record
holder being at z=4.69. At these distances the CO lines are shifted to longer
wavelengths, enabling their observation with sensitive radio and millimetre
interferometers. Here we present the discovery of CO emission toward the quasar
SDSS J114816.64+525150.3 (hereafter J1148+5251) at a redshift of z=6.42, when
the universe was only 1/16 of its present age. This is the first detection of
molecular gas at the end of cosmic reionization. The presence of large amounts
of molecular gas (M(H_2)=2.2e10 M_sun) in an object at this time demonstrates
that heavy element enriched molecular gas can be generated rapidly in the

Egg Formation in Lepidoptera
Reproductive biology in the Twentieth Century produced comprehensive descriptions of the mechanisms of egg formation in most of the major orders of insects. While many general principles of ovarian development and physiology emerged, every order turned out to have a set of its own special motifs. Discovery of the lepidopteran motifs is summarized in this essay. The emphasis is on developmental mechanisms, beginning with the early growth and differentiation of female germ cells and ending, after many turns in morphogenesis, physiology and biosynthesis, with eggs that are filled with yolk and encased in chorions. Examples of uniquely lepidopteran traits include the cellular composition of ovarian follicles, the number of tubular ovarioles in which they mature, the functions of cell-to-cell junctional complexes in their maturation, their use of glycosaminoglycans to maintain intercellular patency during vitellogenesis, the role of proton and calcium pumps in their ion physiology, a separate postvitellogenic period of water and inorganic ion uptake, and the fine structure and protein composition of their chorions. Discovery of this combination of idiosyncracies was based on advances in the general concepts and techniques of cell and molecular biology and on insights borrowed from studies on other insects. From Service to Experience: Understanding and Defining the Hospitality Business
Failure adequately to define or understand hospitality as a commercial phenomenon has created a fragmented academic environment and a schizophrenia in the industry that has the potential to limit its development as a global industry. This article suggests that, by redefining hospitality as behaviour and experience, a new perspective emerges that has exciting implications for the management of hospitality businesses. A framework to describe hospitality in the commercial domain is proposed. This framework suggests a focus on the host–guest relationship, generosity, theatre and performance, ‘lots of little surprises’, and the security of strangers – a focus that provides guests with experiences that are personal, memorable and add value to their lives
