Numerical study of relaxation in electron glasses
We perform a numerical simulation of energy relaxation in three-dimensional
electron glasses in the strongly localized regime at finite temperatures. We
consider systems with no interactions, with long-range Coulomb interactions and
with short-range interactions, obtaining a power law relaxation with an
exponent of 0.15, which is independent of the parameters of the problem and of
the type of interaction. At very long times, we always find an exponential
regime whose characteristic time strongly depends on temperature, system size,
interaction type and localization radius. We extrapolate the longest relaxation
time to macroscopic sizes and, for interacting samples, obtain values much
larger than the measuring time. We finally study the number of electrons
participating in the relaxation processes of very low energy configurations.Comment: 6 eps figures. To be published in Phys. Rev.
Discovery of a wide companion near the deuterium burning mass limit in the Upper Scorpius association
We present the discovery of a companion near the deuterium burning mass limit
located at a very wide distance, at an angular separation of 4.6+/-0.1 arcsec
(projected distance of ~ 670 AU) from UScoCTIO108, a brown dwarf of the very
young Upper Scorpius association. Optical and near-infrared photometry and
spectroscopy confirm the cool nature of both objects, with spectral types of M7
and M9.5, respectively, and that they are bona fide members of the association,
showing low gravity and features of youth. Their masses, estimated from the
comparison of their bolometric luminosities and theoretical models for the age
range of the association, are 60+/-20 and 14^{+2}_{-8} MJup, respectively. The
existence of this object around a brown dwarf at this wide orbit suggests that
the companion is unlikely to have formed in a disk based on current planet
formation models. Because this system is rather weakly bound, they did not
probably form through dynamical ejection of stellar embryos.Comment: 10 pages, including 4 figures and 2 table
A radio and infrared exploration of the Cygnus X-3 environments
To confirm, or rule out, the possible hot spot nature of two previously
detected radio sources in the vicinity of the Cygnus X-3 microquasar.
We present the results of a radio and near infrared exploration of the
several arc-minute field around the well known galactic relativistic jet source
Cygnus X-3 using the Very Large Array and the Calar Alto 3.5~m telescope.
The data this paper is based on do not presently support the hot spot
hypothesis. Instead, our new observations suggest that these sources are most
likely background or foreground objects. Actually, none of them appears to be
even barely extended as would be expected if they were part of a bow shock
structure. Our near infrared observations also include a search for extended
emission in the Bracket (2.166 m) and (2.122 m)
lines as possible tracers of shocked gas in the Cygnus X-3 surroundings. The
results were similarly negative and the corresponding upper limits are

Size-Controlled Water-Soluble Ag Nanoparticles
Ag nanoparticles of two different sizes (1 and 4 nm) were prepared within an apoferritin cavity by using an Ag+-loaded apoferritin as a nanoconfined environment for their construction. The initial amount of Ag' ions injected in the apoferritin cavity dictates the size of the final Ag particles. The protein shell prevents bulk aggregation of the metal particles, which renders them water soluble and extremely stable
Biophysical Processes Determining the Connectivity of the Alboran Sea Fish Populations
This chapter revises biogeophysical issues of connectivity processes for fish populations in the Alboran Sea—Strait of Gibraltar—Gulf of Cadiz area. Connectivity of early life history stages between distant spawning grounds is crucial to incorporate vital developmental rates that condition survival probabilities at critical ontogenic stages. Hydrodynamics is pivotal to the process and most particular for pelagic species originating from adult fish adapted to recurrent patterns. Therefore, special focus has been placed on the hydrodynamics of the region, particularly on the Alboran Sea where the swift and energetic eastward-flowing Atlantic Jet entering the basin from the Strait of Gibraltar determines the surface circulation patterns. The Jet establishes an obvious zonal west-to-east connectivity, prevents the one in the opposite east-to-west direction and works as a hydrodynamic barrier that hampers the north-to-south connectivity. The chapter addresses these processes, discusses possible mechanisms to achieve connectivity between north and south shores, which have to overcome the hydrodynamic barrier, and assesses the feasibility of east-to-west connectivity by means of intermediate-depth currents. Implications on the populations and ecosystems of the Alboran Sea and on the three main harvested species potentially affected by hydrodynamic connectivity in the basin (European hake, the sardine, and the blackspot seabream) are also commented.Preprin
Bacterial virulence factor inhibits caspase-4/11 activation in intestinal epithelial cells
The human pathogen enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), as well as the mouse pathogen Citrobacter rodentium, colonize the gut mucosa via attaching and effacing lesion formation and cause diarrheal diseases. EPEC and C. rodentium type III secretion system (T3SS) effectors repress innate immune responses and infiltration of immune cells. Inflammatory caspases such as caspase-1 and caspase-4/11 are crucial mediators of host defense and inflammation in the gut via their ability to process cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18. Here we report that the effector NleF binds the catalytic domain of caspase-4 and inhibits its proteolytic activity. Following infection of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) EPEC inhibited caspase-4 and IL-18 processing in an NleF-dependent manner. Depletion of caspase-4 in IECs prevented the secretion of mature IL-18 in response to infection with EPECΔnleF. NleF-dependent inhibition of caspase-11 in colons of mice prevented IL-18 secretion and neutrophil influx at early stages of C. rodentium infection. Neither wild-type C. rodentium nor C. rodentiumΔnleF triggered neutrophil infiltration or IL-18 secretion in Cas11 or Casp1/11-deficient mice. Thus, IECs have a key role in modulating early innate immune responses in the gut via a caspase-4/11—IL-18 axis, which is targeted by virulence factors encoded by enteric pathogens
Early overnutrition sensitizes the growth hormone axis to the impact of diet-induced obesity via sex-divergent mechanisms
In addition to its essential role in the physiological control of longitudinal growth, growth-hormone (GH) is endowed with relevant metabolic functions, including anabolic actions in muscle, lipolysis in adipose-tissue and glycemic modulation. Adult obesity is known to negatively impact GH-axis, thereby promoting a vicious circle that may contribute to the exacerbation of the metabolic complications of overweight. Yet, to what extent early-overnutrition sensitizes the somatotropic-axis to the deleterious effects of obesity remains largely unexplored. Using a rat-model of sequential exposure to obesogenic insults, namely postnatal-overfeeding during lactation and high-fat diet (HFD) after weaning, we evaluated in both sexes the individual and combined impact of these nutritional challenges upon key elements of the somatotropic-axis. While feeding HFD per se had a modest impact on the adult GH-axis, early overnutrition had durable effects on key elements of the somatotropic-system, which were sexually different, with a significant inhibition of pituitary gene expression of GH-releasing hormone-receptor (GHRH-R) and somatostatin receptor-5 (SST5) in males, but an increase in pituitary GHRH-R, SST2, SST5, GH secretagogue-receptor (GHS-R) and ghrelin expression in females. Notably, early-overnutrition sensitized the GH-axis to the deleterious impact of HFD, with a significant suppression of pituitary GH expression in both sexes and lowering of circulating GH levels in females. Yet, despite their similar metabolic perturbations, males and females displayed rather distinct alterations of key somatotropic-regulators/ mediators. Our data document a synergistic effect of postnatal-overnutrition on the detrimental impact of HFD-induced obesity on key elements of the adult GH-axis, which is conducted via mechanisms that are sexually-divergent
Hepatocellular carcinoma risk-stratification based on ASGR1 in circulating epithelial cells for cancer interception
Purpose: Lack of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in hepatocellular
carcinoma impedes stratifying patients based on their risk of developing
cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate phenotypic and genetic
heterogeneity of circulating epithelial cells (CECs) based on
asialoglycoprotein receptor 1 (ASGR1) and miR-122-5p expression as
potential diagnostic and prognostic tools in patients with hepatocellular
carcinoma (HCC) and liver cirrhosis (LC).
Methods: Peripheral blood samples were extracted from LC and HCC patients
at different disease stages. CECs were isolated using positive immunomagnetic
selection. Genetic and phenotypic characterization was validated by double
immunocytochemistry for cytokeratin (CK) and ASGR1 or by in situ hybridization
with miR-122-5p and CECs were visualized by confocal microscopy.
Results: The presence of CECs increased HCC risk by 2.58-fold, however, this
was only significant for patients with previous LC (p = 0.028) and not for those
without prior LC (p = 0.23). Furthermore, the number of CECs lacking
ASGR1 expression correlated significantly with HCC incidence and absence
of miR-122-5p expression (p = 0.014; r = 0.23). Finally, overall survival was
significantly greater for patients at earlier cancer stages (p = 0.018), but this difference was only maintained in the group with the presence of CECs (p =
0.021) whereas progression-free survival was influenced by the absence of
ASGR1 expression.
Conclusion: Identification and characterization of CECs by ASGR1 and/or miR-
122-5p expression may be used as a risk-stratification tool in LC patients, as it
was shown to be an independent prognostic and risk-stratification marker in LC
and early disease stage HCC patients
