From geodesics of the multipole solutions to the perturbed Kepler problem
A static and axisymmetric solution of the Einstein vacuum equations with a
finite number of Relativistic Multipole Moments (RMM) is written in MSA
coordinates up to certain order of approximation, and the structure of its
metric components is explicitly shown. From the equation of equatorial
geodesics we obtain the Binet equation for the orbits and it allows us to
determine the gravitational potential that leads to the equivalent classical
orbital equations of the perturbed Kepler problem. The relativistic corrections
to Keplerian motion are provided by the different contributions of the RMM of
the source starting from the Monopole (Schwarzschild correction). In
particular, the perihelion precession of the orbit is calculated in terms of
the quadrupole and 2-pole moments. Since the MSA coordinates generalize the
Schwarzschild coordinates, the result obtained allows measurement of the
relevance of the quadrupole moment in the first order correction to the
perihelion frequency-shift
Accurate light-time correction due to a gravitating mass
This work arose as an aftermath of Cassini's 2002 experiment \cite{bblipt03},
in which the PPN parameter was measured with an accuracy
and found consistent with the prediction
of general relativity. The Orbit Determination Program (ODP) of
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which was used in the data analysis, is based
on an expression for the gravitational delay which differs from the standard
formula; this difference is of second order in powers of -- the sun's
gravitational radius -- but in Cassini's case it was much larger than the
expected order of magnitude , where is the ray's closest approach
distance. Since the ODP does not account for any other second-order terms, it
is necessary, also in view of future more accurate experiments, to
systematically evaluate higher order corrections and to determine which terms
are significant. Light propagation in a static spacetime is equivalent to a
problem in ordinary geometrical optics; Fermat's action functional at its
minimum is just the light-time between the two end points A and B. A new and
powerful formulation is thus obtained. Asymptotic power series are necessary to
provide a safe and automatic way of selecting which terms to keep at each
order. Higher order approximations to the delay and the deflection are
obtained. We also show that in a close superior conjunction, when is much
smaller than the distances of A and B from the Sun, of order , say, the
second-order correction has an \emph{enhanced} part of order , which
corresponds just to the second-order terms introduced in the ODP. Gravitational
deflection of the image of a far away source, observed from a finite distance
from the mass, is obtained to .Comment: 4 figure
INPOP08, a 4-D planetary ephemeris: From asteroid and time-scale computations to ESA Mars Express and Venus Express contributions
The latest version of the planetary ephemerides developed at the Paris
Observatory and at the Besancon Observatory is presented here. INPOP08 is a
4-dimension ephemeris since it provides to users positions and velocities of
planets and the relation between TT and TDB. Investigations leading to improve
the modeling of asteroids are described as well as the new sets of observations
used for the fit of INPOP08. New observations provided by the European Space
Agency (ESA) deduced from the tracking of the Mars Express (MEX) and Venus
Express (VEX) missions are presented as well as the normal point deduced from
the Cassini mission. We show the huge impact brought by these observations in
the fit of INPOP08, especially in terms of Venus, Saturn and Earth-Moon
barycenter orbits.Comment: 14 pages. submitted to A&A. accepted in A&
A Modified Scalar-Tensor-Vector Gravity Theory and the Constraint on its Parameters
A gravity theory called scalar-tensor-vector gravity (STVG) has been recently
developed and succeeded in solar system, astrophysical and cosmological scales
without dark matter [J. W. Moffat, J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 03, 004 (2006)].
However, two assumptions have been used: (i) , where and
are and in the Schwarzschild coordinates (static and
spherically symmetric); (ii) scalar field in the solar system. These
two assumptions actually imply that the standard parametrized post-Newtonian
parameter . In this paper, we relax these two assumptions and study
STVG further by using the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation approach. With
abandoning the assumptions, we find in general cases of STVG.
Then, a version of modified STVG (MSTVG) is proposed through introducing a
coupling function of scalar field G: . We have derived the metric
and equations of motion (EOM) in 1PN for general matter without specific
equation of state and point masses firstly. Subsequently, the secular
periastron precession of binary pulsars in harmonic coordinates
is given. After discussing two PPN parameters ( and ) and two
Yukawa parameters ( and ), we use of four
binary pulsars data (PSR B1913+16, PSR B1534+12, PSR J0737-3039 and PSR
B2127+11C) to constrain the Yukawa parameters for MSTVG:

Effect of inhomogeneity of the Universe on a gravitationally bound local system: A no-go result for explaining the secular increase in the astronomical unit
We will investigate the influence of the inhomogeneity of the universe,
especially that of the Lema{\^i}tre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model, on a
gravitationally bound local system such as the solar system. We concentrate on
the dynamical perturbation to the planetary motion and derive the leading order
effect generated from the LTB model. It will be shown that there appear not
only a well-known cosmological effect arisen from the homogeneous and isotropic
model, such as the Robertson-Walker (RW) model, but also the additional terms
due to the radial inhomogeneity of the LTB model. We will also apply the
obtained results to the problem of secular increase in the astronomical unit,
reported by Krasinsky and Brumberg (2004), and imply that the inhomogeneity of
the universe cannot have a significant effect for explaining the observed

Observables, gauge invariance, and the role of the observers in the limit from general relativity to special relativity
Some conceptual issues concerning general invariant theories, with special
emphasis on general relativity, are analyzed. The common assertion that
observables must be required to be gauge invariant is examined in the light of
the role played by a system of observers. Some features of the reduction of the
gauge group are discussed, including the fact that in the process of a partial
gauge fixing the reduction at the level of the gauge group and the reduction at
the level of the variational principle do not commute. Distinctions between the
mathematical and the physical concept of gauge symmetry are discussed and
illustrated with examples. The limit from general relativity to special
relativity is considered as an example of a gauge group reduction that is
allowed in some specific physical circumstances. Whether and when the
Poincar\'e group must be considered as a residual gauge group will come out as
a result of our analysis, that applies, in particular, to asymptotically flat
spaces.Comment: 17 page
Relativistic Celestial Mechanics with PPN Parameters
Starting from the global parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) reference system
with two PPN parameters and we consider a space-bounded
subsystem of matter and construct a local reference system for that subsystem
in which the influence of external masses reduces to tidal effects. Both the
metric tensor of the local PPN reference system in the first post-Newtonian
approximation as well as the coordinate transformations between the global PPN
reference system and the local one are constructed in explicit form. The terms
proportional to reflecting a violation of the
equivalence principle are discussed in detail. We suggest an empirical
definition of multipole moments which are intended to play the same role in PPN
celestial mechanics as the Blanchet-Damour moments in General Relativity.
Starting with the metric tensor in the local PPN reference system we derive
translational equations of motion of a test particle in that system. The
translational and rotational equations of motion for center of mass and spin of
each of extended massive bodies possessing arbitrary multipole structure
are derived. As an application of the general equations of motion a
monopole-spin dipole model is considered and the known PPN equations of motion
of mass monopoles with spins are rederived.Comment: 71 page
