Correlation of the Hippocampal theta rhythm to changes in hypothalamic temperature
Warming and cooling the preoptic anterior hypothalamic area in awake, loosely restrained rabbits was found to evoke theta rhythm. This is consistent with previous studies indicating that theta rhythm is a nonspecific response evoked by stimulation of several sensory modalities. Several studies have correlated theta rhythm with alertness. A neural pathway involving the hypothalamus, the hippocampus, the septal area, and the reticular formation is proposed. Thus, a role of this pathway may be to alert the animal to changes in its body temperature
An upper limit for the water outgassing rate of the main-belt comet 176P/LINEAR observed with Herschel/HIFI
176P/LINEAR is a member of the new cometary class known as main-belt comets
(MBCs). It displayed cometary activity shortly during its 2005 perihelion
passage that may be driven by the sublimation of sub-surface ices. We have
therefore searched for emission of the H2O 110-101 ground state rotational line
at 557 GHz toward 176P/LINEAR with the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far
Infrared (HIFI) on board the Herschel Space Observatory on UT 8.78 August 2011,
about 40 days after its most recent perihelion passage, when the object was at
a heliocentric distance of 2.58 AU. No H2O line emission was detected in our
observations, from which we derive sensitive 3-sigma upper limits for the water
production rate and column density of < 4e25 molec/s and of < 3e10 cm^{-2},
respectively. From the peak brightness measured during the object's active
period in 2005, this upper limit is lower than predicted by the relation
between production rates and visual magnitudes observed for a sample of comets
by Jorda et al. (2008) at this heliocentric distance. Thus, 176P/LINEAR was
likely less active at the time of our observation than during its previous
perihelion passage. The retrieved upper limit is lower than most values derived
for the H2O production rate from the spectroscopic search for CN emission in

Toeplitz Inverse Covariance-Based Clustering of Multivariate Time Series Data
Subsequence clustering of multivariate time series is a useful tool for
discovering repeated patterns in temporal data. Once these patterns have been
discovered, seemingly complicated datasets can be interpreted as a temporal
sequence of only a small number of states, or clusters. For example, raw sensor
data from a fitness-tracking application can be expressed as a timeline of a
select few actions (i.e., walking, sitting, running). However, discovering
these patterns is challenging because it requires simultaneous segmentation and
clustering of the time series. Furthermore, interpreting the resulting clusters
is difficult, especially when the data is high-dimensional. Here we propose a
new method of model-based clustering, which we call Toeplitz Inverse
Covariance-based Clustering (TICC). Each cluster in the TICC method is defined
by a correlation network, or Markov random field (MRF), characterizing the
interdependencies between different observations in a typical subsequence of
that cluster. Based on this graphical representation, TICC simultaneously
segments and clusters the time series data. We solve the TICC problem through
alternating minimization, using a variation of the expectation maximization
(EM) algorithm. We derive closed-form solutions to efficiently solve the two
resulting subproblems in a scalable way, through dynamic programming and the
alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), respectively. We validate
our approach by comparing TICC to several state-of-the-art baselines in a
series of synthetic experiments, and we then demonstrate on an automobile
sensor dataset how TICC can be used to learn interpretable clusters in

Fermi surface topology and low-lying quasiparticle structure of magnetically ordered Fe1+xTe
We report the first photoemission study of Fe1+xTe - the host compound of the
newly discovered iron-chalcogenide superconductors. Our results reveal a pair
of nearly electron- hole compensated Fermi pockets, strong Fermi velocity
renormalization and an absence of a spin-density-wave gap. A shadow hole pocket
is observed at the "X"-point of the Brillouin zone which is consistent with a
long-range ordered magneto-structural groundstate. No signature of Fermi
surface nesting instability associated with Q= pi(1/2, 1/2) is observed. Our
results collectively reveal that the Fe1+xTe series is dramatically different
from the undoped phases of the high Tc pnictides and likely harbor unusual

Charge collective modes in an incommensurately modulated cuprate
We report the first measurement of collective charge modes of insulating
Sr14Cu24O41 using inelastic resonant x-ray scattering over the complete
Brillouin zone. Our results show that the intense excitation modes at the
charge gap edge predominantly originate from the ladder-containing planar
substructures. The observed ladder modes (E vs. Q) are found to be dispersive
for momentum transfers along the "legs" but nearly localized along the "rungs".
Dispersion and peakwidth characteristics are similar to the charge spectrum of
1D Mott insulators, and we show that our results can be understood in the
strong coupling limit (U >> t_{ladder}> t_{chain}). The observed behavior is in
marked contrast to the charge spectrum seen in most two dimensional cuprates.
Quite generally, our results also show that momentum-tunability of inelastic
scattering can be used to resolve mode contributions in multi-component

Emergence of Fermi pockets in an excitonic CDW melted novel superconductor
A superconducting (SC) state (Tc ~ 4.2K) has very recently been observed upon
successful doping of the CDW ordered triangular lattice TiSe, with copper.
Using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy we identify, for the first
time, the momentum space locations of the doped electrons that form the Fermi
sea of the parent superconductor. With doping, we find that the kinematic
nesting volume increases whereas the coherence of the CDW order sharply drops.
In the superconducting doping, we observe the emergence of a large density of
states in the form of a narrow electron pocket near the \textit{L}-point of the
Brillouin Zone with \textit{d}-like character. The \textit{k}-space electron
distributions highlight the unconventional interplay of CDW to SC cross-over

A topological insulator surface under strong Coulomb, magnetic and disorder perturbations
Three dimensional topological insulators embody a newly discovered state of
matter characterized by conducting spin-momentum locked surface states that
span the bulk band gap as demonstrated via spin-resolved ARPES measurements .
This highly unusual surface environment provides a rich ground for the
discovery of novel physical phenomena. Here we present the first controlled
study of the topological insulator surfaces under strong Coulomb, magnetic and
disorder perturbations. We have used interaction of iron, with a large Coulomb
state and significant magnetic moment as a probe to \textit{systematically test
the robustness} of the topological surface states of the model topological
insulator BiSe. We observe that strong perturbation leads to the
creation of odd multiples of Dirac fermions and that magnetic interactions
break time reversal symmetry in the presence of band hybridization. We also
present a theoretical model to account for the altered surface of BiSe.
Taken collectively, these results are a critical guide in manipulating
topological surfaces for probing fundamental physics or developing device
