Adhesion-independent synergy of monocytes and endothelial cells in cytokine production: regulation of IL-6 and GMâCSF production by PAF
Co-Cultures of monocytes (MO) and endothelial cells (EC) were studied for their capacity to synergize in the production of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GMâCSF), two cytokines potentially important in vascular physiopathology. Resting monocytes produced detectable amounts of IL-6 but no GMâCSF, whereas confluent EC produced significant quantities of GMâCSF, but minimal IL-6. In co-cultures without stimuli, additive synthesis of both cytokines was observed. When EC were pretreated, however, with either PAF, TNF or both stimuli, before addition of MO, synergistic production of IL-6 was observed. In contrast, GMâCSF production was not enhanced by coculture of monocytes with activated EC. When either cell population was fixed with paraformaldehyde or killed by freeze-thawing before addition to the co-culture, cytokine levels reverted to those produced by the unaffected population alone. On the other hand, separating the two cell populations by a cell-impermeable membrane in transwell cultures did not affect the synergistic production of the cytokines. Taken together, our data suggest that EC and MO can synergize in response to stimuli by producing IL-6 and that this synergy is dependent on the integrity of both cell populations, but independent of cell-cell contact
Numerical observation of non-axisymmetric vesicles in fluid membranes
By means of Surface Evolver (Exp. Math,1,141 1992), a software package of
brute-force energy minimization over a triangulated surface developed by the
geometry center of University of Minnesota, we have numerically searched the
non-axisymmetric shapes under the Helfrich spontaneous curvature (SC) energy
model. We show for the first time there are abundant mechanically stable
non-axisymmetric vesicles in SC model, including regular ones with intrinsic
geometric symmetry and complex irregular ones. We report in this paper several
interesting shapes including a corniculate shape with six corns, a
quadri-concave shape, a shape resembling sickle cells, and a shape resembling
acanthocytes. As far as we know, these shapes have not been theoretically
obtained by any curvature model before. In addition, the role of the
spontaneous curvature in the formation of irregular crenated vesicles has been
studied. The results shows a positive spontaneous curvature may be a necessary

Proton and Pion Production Relative to the Reaction Plane in Au + Au Collisions at AGS Energies
Results are presented of an analysis of proton and charged pion azimuthal
distributions measured with respect to the reaction plane in Au + Au collisions
at a beam momentum of about 11 AGeV/c. The azimuthal anisotropy is studied as a
function of particle rapidity and transverse momentum for different
centralities of the collisions. The triple differential (in rapidity,
transverse momentum, and azimuthal angle) distributions are reconstructed. A
comparison of the results with a previous analysis of charged particle and
transverse energy flow as well as with model predictions is presented.Comment: 23 pages (LaTeX), 12 figure
Packing of Compressible Granular Materials
3D Computer simulations and experiments are employed to study random packings
of compressible spherical grains under external confining stress. Of particular
interest is the rigid ball limit, which we describe as a continuous transition
in which the applied stress vanishes as (\phi-\phi_c)^\beta, where \phi is the
(solid phase) volume density. This transition coincides with the onset of shear
rigidity. The value of \phi_c depends, for example, on whether the grains
interact via only normal forces (giving rise to random close packings) or by a
combination of normal and friction generated transverse forces (producing
random loose packings). In both cases, near the transition, the system's
response is controlled by localized force chains. As the stress increases, we
characterize the system's evolution in terms of (1) the participation number,

Working with argan cake: a new etiology for hypersensitivity pneumonitis
International audienceAbstractBackgroundArgan is now used worldwide in numerous cosmetic products. Nine workers from a cosmetic factory were examined in our occupational medicine department, following the diagnosis of a case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) related to handling of argan cakes.MethodsOperators were exposed to three forms of argan (crude granulates, powder or liquid) depending on the step of the process. All workers systematically completed standardized questionnaires on occupational and medical history, followed by medical investigations, comprising, in particular, physical examination and chest X-rays, total IgE and a systematic screening for specific serum antibodies directed against the usual microbial agents of domestic and farmerâs HP and antigens derived from microbiological culture and extracts of various argan products. Subjects with episodes of flu-like syndrome several hours after handling argan cakes, were submitted to a one-hour challenge to argan cakes followed by physical examination, determination of Carbon Monoxide Diffusing Capacity (DLCO) and chest CT-scan on day 2, and, when necessary, bronchoalveolar lavage on day 4.ResultsSix of the nine workers experienced flu-like symptoms within 8Â hours after argan handling. After challenge, two subjects presented a significant decrease of DLCO and alveolitis with mild lymphocytosis, and one presented ground glass opacities. These two patients and another patient presented significant arcs to both granulates and non-sterile powder. No reactivity was observed to sterile argan finished product, antigens derived from argan cultures (various species of Bacillus) and Streptomyces marokkonensis (reported in the literature to contaminate argan roots).ConclusionsWe report the first evidence of hypersensitivity pneumonitis related to argan powder in two patients. This implies preventive measures to reduce their exposure and clinical survey to diagnose early symptoms. As exposure routes are different and antibodies were observed against argan powder and not the sterile form, consumers using argan-based cosmetics should not be concerned
Two-pion correlations in Au+Au collisions at 10.8 GeV/c per nucleon
Two-particle correlation functions for positive and negative pions have been
measured in Au+Au collisions at 10.8~GeV/c per nucleon. The data were analyzed
using one- and three-dimensional correlation functions. From the results of the
three-dimensional fit the phase space density of pions was calculated. It is

Epidemiology of occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis; reports from the SWORD scheme in the UK from 1996 to 2015
Objective To estimate the reported incidence of
occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis (OHP) in the
UK and to consider whether the pattern of attributed
causation has changed over time.
Methods All cases of OHP reported to the SWORD
scheme between January 1996 and December 2015
were classified into 1 of 10 categories of the suspected
agent. Cases were grouped into four 5-year time
periods to examine any changing pattern in incidence
or suspected causation. For each time period, the
annual incidence was calculated using the estimated
number of reported cases and the working population
of the UK.
Results Between 1996 and 2015, there were 202
actual cases of OHP reported to SWORD, equating to
an estimated 818 cases, when adjusting for the
sampling ratio. Over this period, the annual UK
incidence was 1.4 per million workers. The mean (SD)
age of reported cases was 52 (13) years, and cases
were four-times more likely to be men than women.
Over the study period, there was a fall in the proportion
of cases reported to be due to agricultural exposures
(44â12%), and an increase in cases due to
metalworking fluids (MWFs, 2â45%).
Conclusions Over the last 20 years, the incidence of
OHP in the UK has been âŒ1â2 cases per million
workers per year. Working with water-based MWFs is
now the most commonly suspected causative exposure
for OHP cases reported to the SWORD scheme in
the UK
Why Effective Medium Theory Fails in Granular Materials
Experimentally it is known that the bulk modulus, K, and shear modulus, \mu,
of a granular assembly of elastic spheres increase with pressure, p, faster
than the p^1/3 law predicted by effective medium theory (EMT) based on
Hertz-Mindlin contact forces. To understand the origin of these discrepancies,
we perform numerical simulations of granular aggregates under compression. We
show that EMT can describe the moduli pressure dependence if one includes the
increasing number of grain-grain contacts with p. Most important, the affine
assumption (which underlies EMT), is found to be valid for K(p) but breakdown
seriously for \mu(p). This explains why the experimental and numerical values
