    Pattern formation of spherical particles in an oscillating flow

    We study the self-organization of spherical particles in an oscillating flow through experiments inside an oscillating box. The interactions between the particles and the time-averaged (steady streaming) flow lead to the formation of either one-particle-thick chains or multiple-particle-wide bands, depending on the oscillatory conditions. Both the chains and the bands are oriented perpendicular to the direction of oscillation with a regular spacing between them. For all our experiments, this spacing is only a function of the relative particle-fluid excursion length normalized by the particle diameter, Ar/DA_r/D, implying that it is an intrinsic quantity that is established only by the hydrodynamics. In contrast, the width of the bands depends on both Ar/DA_r/D and the confinement, characterized by the particle coverage fraction ϕ\phi. Using the relation for the chain spacing, we accurately predict the transition from one-particle-thick chains to wider bands as a function of ϕ\phi and Ar/DA_r/D. Our experimental results are complemented with numerical simulations in which the flow around the particles is fully resolved. These simulations show that the regular chain spacing arises from the balance between long-range attractive and short-range repulsive hydrodynamic interactions, caused by the vortices in the steady streaming flow. We further show that these vortices induce an additional attractive interaction at very short range when Ar/D≳0.7A_r/D\gtrsim0.7, which stabilizes the multiple-particle-wide bands.     Early diagnosis of coeliac disease in the Preventive Youth Health Care Centres in the Netherlands: study protocol of a case finding study (GLUTENSCREEN)

    Introduction Coeliac disease (CD) occurs in 1% of the population, develops early in life and is severely underdiagnosed. Undiagnosed and untreated disease is associated with short-term and long-term complications. The current healthcare approach is unable to solve the underdiagnosis of CD and timely diagnosis and treatment is only achieved by active case finding. Aim: to perform a case finding project to detect CD children who visit the Youth Health Care Centres (YHCCs) in a well-described region in the Netherlands to evaluate whether it is feasible, cost-effective and well accepted by the population.Methods/analysis Prospective intervention cohort study. Parents of all children aged 12 months and 4 years attending the YHCCs for a regular visit are asked whether their child has one or more CD-related symptoms from a standardised list. If so, they will be invited to participate in the case finding study. After informed consent, a point of care test (POCT) to assess CD-specific antibodies against tissue transglutaminase (TG2A) is performed onsite the YHCCs. If the POCT is positive, CD is highly suspected and the child will be referred to hospital for definitive diagnosis according to the Guideline Coeliac Disease of the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition guideline.Main outcomes1. Incidence rate of new CD diagnoses in the study region in comparison to the one in the same age diagnosed by standard of care in the rest of the Netherlands.2. Feasibility and cost-effectiveness of active CD case finding at the YHCCs. All costs of active case finding, diagnostics and treatment of CD and the potential short-term and long-term consequences of the disease will be calculated for the setting with and without case finding.1.     Decolonizar la investigación sobre migraciones : apuntes desde una etnografía colaborativa

    En este artículo analizamos los significados asumidos por la idea de "(in)migración(es)" y la categoría de "(in)migrante(s)" en los contextos sociales, políticos y académicos contemporáneos. Resaltando su estrecha relación con el pensamiento de Estado y la colonialidad del poder/saber, nos preguntamos por otros posibles acercamientos a la movilidad humana. Discutimos la etnografía colaborativa, entendida como una metodología decolonial que rechaza las representaciones pasivizantes hegemónicas y aspira a visibilizar los procesos de subjetivación política de las personas junto a las que se investiga. Aportando ejemplos de nuestra propia investigación colaborativa junto a Stop Desahucios-Granada 15M, ilustramos cómo la idea de (in)migración(es) y la categoría "(in)migrante(s)" se han materializado en nuestro contexto, que se encuentra definido por el activismo político y no había sido previamente alterizado como "migratorio". Concluimos resaltando la ambivalencia implícita en estas dos expresiones y reflexionamos sobre los pros y los contras implícitos en su uso.In this paper we analyze the meaning of "immigration" and "immigrant" within contemporary social, political and academic contexts. We emphasize their narrow relation with State thought and the coloniality of power/knowledge and search for alternative approaches to human mobility. With this aim, we discuss collaborative ethnography as a decolonial methodology addressed to visibilize the political subjectivation processes of the people we research with. Drawing on examples from our own collaborative research with Stop Evictions-Granada 15M, we show how the idea of "immigration" and the category "immigrants" have come into being within our field, a space of political activism which had not been previously constructed as a "migratory context". We conclude underlining the ambivalence implicit in the two aforementioned concepts and discuss the pros and cons of using them

    A Functional Role for 4qA/B in the Structural Rearrangement of the 4q35 Region and in the Regulation of FRG1 and ANT1 in Facioscapulohumeral Dystrophy

    The number of D4Z4 repeats in the subtelomeric region of chromosome 4q is strongly reduced in patients with Facio-Scapulo-Humeral Dystrophy (FSHD). We performed chromosome conformation capture (3C) analysis to document the interactions taking place among different 4q35 markers. We found that the reduced number of D4Z4 repeats in FSHD myoblasts was associated with a global alteration of the three-dimensional structure of the 4q35 region. Indeed, differently from normal myoblasts, the 4qA/B marker interacted directly with the promoters of the FRG1 and ANT1 genes in FSHD cells. Along with the presence of a newly identified transcriptional enhancer within the 4qA allele, our demonstration of an interaction occurring between chromosomal segments located megabases away on the same chromosome 4q allows to revisit the possible mechanisms leading to FSHD
