Motion of a condensate in a shaken and vibrating harmonic trap
The dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a time-dependent harmonic
trapping potential is determined for arbitrary variations of the position of
the center of the trap and its frequencies. The dynamics of the BEC wavepacket
is soliton-like. The motion of the center of the wavepacket, and the spatially
and temporally dependent phase (which affects the coherence properties of the
BEC) multiplying the soliton-like part of the wavepacket, are analytically

Effect of vacuum exhaust pressure on the performance of MHD ducts at high B-field
The effect of area ratio variation on the performance of a supersonic Hall MHD duct is investigated. Results indicate that for a given combustion pressure there exists an area ratio below which the power generating region of the duct is shock free and the power output increases linearly with the square of the magnetic field. For area ratios greater than this, a shock forms in the power generating region which moves upstream with increasing magnetic field strength resulting in a less rapid raise in the power output. The shock can be moved downstream by either increasing the combustion pressure of decreasing the exhaust pressure. The influence of these effects upon duct performance is presented
High B-field, large area ratio MHD duct experiments
Studies of the effect of area ratio variation on the performance of a supersonic Hall MHD duct were extended up to area ratios of 6.25/1. It is shown that for a given area ratio there is a combustion pressure above which the power generating region of the duct is shock free and the power output increases linearly with the square of the magnetic field. Below this pressure a shock forms in the duct which moves upstream with increasing magnetic field strength and results in a less rapid rise in power output
Transport properties of annealed CdSe nanocrystal solids
Transport properties of artificial solids composed of colloidal CdSe
nanocrystals (NCs) are studied from 6 K to 250 K, before and after annealing.
Annealing results in greatly enhanced dark and photocurrent in NC solids, while
transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs show that the inter-dot
separation decreases. The increased current can be attributed to the
enhancement of inter-dot tunneling caused by the decreased separation between
NCs and by chemical changes in their organic cap. In addition, the absorption
spectra of annealed solids are slightly red-shifted and broadened. These
red-shifts may result from the change of the dielectric environment around the
NCs. Our measurements also indicate that Coulomb interactions between charges
on neighboring NCs play an important role in the tunneling current.Comment: 24 pages,4 figures, 1 tabl

Tycho Brahe's supernova: light from centuries past
The light curve of SN 1572 is described in the terms used nowadays to
characterize SNeIa. By assembling the records of the observations done in
1572--74 and evaluating their uncertainties, it is possible to recover the
light curve and the color evolution of this supernova. It is found that, within
the SNe Ia family, the event should have been a SNIa with a normal rate of
decline, its stretch factor being {\it s} 0.9. Visual light curve near
maximum, late--time decline and the color evolution sustain this conclusion.
After correcting for extinction, the luminosity of this supernova is found to

Purification, growth, and characterization of Zn(x)Cd(1-x)Se crystals
The purification of starting materials which were used in the growth of Zn(x)Cd(1-x)Se (x = 0.2) single crystals using the traveling solution method (TSM) is reported. Up to 13 cm long single crystals and as grown resistivities of 6 x 10(exp 12) ohm/cm could be achieved. Infrared and Raman spectra of Zn(0.2)Cd(0.8)Se are also presented and discussed
Implementation of a local principal curves algorithm for neutrino interaction reconstruction in a liquid argon volume
A local principal curve algorithm has been implemented in three dimensions
for automated track and shower reconstruction of neutrino interactions in a

Real-Reward Testing for Probabilistic Processes (Extended Abstract)
We introduce a notion of real-valued reward testing for probabilistic
processes by extending the traditional nonnegative-reward testing with negative
rewards. In this richer testing framework, the may and must preorders turn out
to be inverses. We show that for convergent processes with finitely many states
and transitions, but not in the presence of divergence, the real-reward
must-testing preorder coincides with the nonnegative-reward must-testing
preorder. To prove this coincidence we characterise the usual resolution-based
testing in terms of the weak transitions of processes, without having to
involve policies, adversaries, schedulers, resolutions, or similar structures
that are external to the process under investigation. This requires

The association between retinal vein ophthalmodynamometric force change and optic disc excavation
Aim: Retinal vein ophthalmodynamometric force (ODF) is predictive of future optic disc excavation in glaucoma, but it is not known if variation in ODF affects prognosis. We aimed to assess whether a change in ODF provides additional prognostic information. Methods: 135 eyes of 75 patients with glaucoma or being glaucoma suspects had intraocular pressure (IOP), visual fields, stereo optic disc photography and ODF measured on an initial visit and a subsequent visit at mean 82 (SD 7.3) months later. Corneal thickness and blood pressure were recorded on the latter visit. When venous pulsation was spontaneous, the ODF was recorded as 0 g. Change in ODF was calculated. Flicker stereochronoscopy was used to determine the occurrence of optic disc excavation, which was modelled against the measured variables using multiple mixed effects logistic regression. Results: Change in ODF (p=0.046) was associated with increased excavation. Average IOP (p=0.66) and other variables were not associated. Odds ratio for increased optic disc excavation of 1.045 per gram ODF change (95% CI 1.001 to 1.090) was calculated. Conclusion: Change in retinal vein ODF may provide additional information to assist with glaucoma prognostication and implies a significant relationship between venous change and glaucoma patho-physiology
