    Brief Consultation to Families of Treatment Refusers with Symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Does It Impact Family Accommodation and Quality of Life?

    Family members are often directly and significantly impacted by the restrictive demands of OCD, a frequently disabling disorder. Family accommodation behaviors (i.e., doing things for or because of the OCD sufferer that a person would not normally do) are associated with dysfunction, including poorer treatment responses in OCD sufferers and greater distress in family members. Although evidence suggests family-based intervention can reduce symptoms in OCD sufferers who participate in treatment, there is a lack of research documenting the impact of interventions designed for the families of OCD treatment refusers (TR). Brief Family Consultation (BFC) was developed by our clinical team to help families refocus their efforts on the things that they can realistically control and change (e.g., participation in compulsions). In this crossover study, twenty families related to an individual who exhibited OCD symptoms but had refused treatment were assigned to five phone sessions of either BFC or a psychoeducation condition. Compared to this credible, attention-placebo control group (Brief Educational Support; BES), BFC (but not BES) resulted in reductions in family accommodation behavior, yet neither BFC nor BES resulted in improved quality of life for family members of treatment refusers. BFC is one of the first interventions to be evaluated for its ability to help families when their loved ones with obsessive compulsive symptoms refuse treatment. This pilot study provides new insights for clinicians and researchers to better address the needs of these neglected families

    Determination of diffusion coefficients in polypyrrole thin films using a current pulse relaxation method

    The current pulse E sub oc relaxation method and its application to the determination of diffusion coefficients in electrochemically synthesized polypyrrole thin films is described. Diffusion coefficients for such films in Et4NBF4 and MeCN are determined for a series of submicron film thicknesses. Measurement of the double-layer capacitance, C sub dl, and the resistance, R sub u, of polypyrrole thin films as a function of potential obtained with the galvanostatic pulse method is reported. Measurements of the electrolyte concentration in reduced polypyrrole films are also presented to aid in the interpretation of the data

    Stochastic Language Generation in Dialogue using Recurrent Neural Networks with Convolutional Sentence Reranking

    The natural language generation (NLG) component of a spoken dialogue system (SDS) usually needs a substantial amount of handcrafting or a well-labeled dataset to be trained on. These limitations add significantly to development costs and make cross-domain, multi-lingual dialogue systems intractable. Moreover, human languages are context-aware. The most natural response should be directly learned from data rather than depending on predefined syntaxes or rules. This paper presents a statistical language generator based on a joint recurrent and convolutional neural network structure which can be trained on dialogue act-utterance pairs without any semantic alignments or predefined grammar trees. Objective metrics suggest that this new model outperforms previous methods under the same experimental conditions. Results of an evaluation by human judges indicate that it produces not only high quality but linguistically varied utterances which are preferred compared to n-gram and rule-based systems.Comment: To be appear in SigDial 201

    Cultural Resources Survey of 98 Acres for the Proposed Taylor Morrison Development Project, Fort Bend County, Texas

    In November 2017, Gray & Pape, Inc. of Houston, Texas, conducted an intensive pedestrian cultural resources survey and deep testing on property subsuming a total of approximately 40 hectares (98 acres) proposed for development in Fort Bend County, Texas. No Texas Antiquities Permit was required as all survey work was completed on privately-owned property. The United States Army Corps of Engineers-Galveston District has been identified as the Lead Agency for this project. The goals of the survey were to establish whether previously unidentified buried archaeological resources were located within or immediately adjacent to the project’s Area of Potential Effects, which is defined as all 40 hectares (98 acres), and if so to provide management recommendations for such resources. The survey was undertaken in accordance with requirements set forth by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, specifically requirements set forth by 36 CFR 800. The procedures to be followed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to fulfill the requirements set forth in the National Historic Preservation Act, other applicable historic preservation laws, and Presidential directives as they relate to the regulatory program of the United States Army Corps of Engineers (33 CFR Parts 320-334) are articulated in the Regulatory Program of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Part 325 - Processing of Department of the Army Permits, Appendix C - Procedures for the Protection of Historic Properties. All fieldwork and reporting activities were completed with reference to State laws and guidelines (the Antiquities Code of Texas). Survey and site identification followed Texas Antiquities Code standards. Fieldwork took place between November 13 and November 22, and required 116-person hours to complete. Field investigations consisted of intensive pedestrian surface inspection, subsurface shovel testing, photographic documentation, mapping, and mechanical deep testing. A total of 59 shovel tests and six deep tests were excavated. Only one shovel test was positive for cultural materials. This test contained a porcelain insulator at a depth of 10 centimeters (4 inches) below surface. This isolated find was completely delineated with no additional materials found within a 20-meter (65-foot) radius. This isolate was located immediately adjacent to Snake Slough and could have washed into place during a flood event. Also, it was located near the intersection of two buried utilities and could have been deposited during their construction. This isolate is not recommended for further investigation and no state-issued trinomial was requested. No new buried significant cultural sites were encountered as a result of survey. Two historical above-ground resources were identified, which include a circa 1950s vernacular residence and the remains of an oil drilling platform. Neither resource is associated with significant events or persons, and are not likely to provide important information about the history of the oil industry in Fort Bend County, nor do they represent distinctive architectural design characteristics. Therefore, neither resource appears to meet the minimum requirements for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and no further work is recommended regarding them. The historic-age resources are not recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. No negative impacts on archaeological sites or significant above-ground resources are anticipated as a result of project construction. Based on these findings, Gray & Pape, Inc. recommends that no further cultural resources work be required and that the project be cleared to proceed as currently planned

    Liquid Acquisition Device Design Sensitivity Study

    In-space propulsion often necessitates the use of a capillary liquid acquisition device (LAD) to assure that gas-free liquid propellant is available to support engine restarts in microgravity. If a capillary screen-channel device is chosen, then the designer must determine the appropriate combination screen mesh and channel geometry. A screen mesh selection which results in the smallest LAD width when compared to any other screen candidate (for a constant length) is desirable; however, no best screen exists for all LAD design requirements. Flow rate, percent fill, and acceleration are the most influential drivers for determining screen widths. Increased flow rates and reduced percent fills increase the through-the-screen flow pressure losses, which drive the LAD to increased widths regardless of screen choice. Similarly, increased acceleration levels and corresponding liquid head pressures drive the screen mesh selection toward a higher bubble point (liquid retention capability). After ruling out some screens on the basis of acceleration requirements alone, candidates can be identified by examining screens with small flow-loss-to-bubble point ratios for a given condition (i.e., comparing screens at certain flow rates and fill levels). Within the same flow rate and fill level, the screen constants inertia resistance coefficient, void fraction, screen pore or opening diameter, and bubble point can become the driving forces in identifying the smaller flow-loss-to-bubble point ratios

    Policy committee for adaptation in multi-domain spoken dialogue systems

    Moving from limited-domain dialogue systems to open domain dialogue systems raises a number of challenges. One of them is the ability of the system to utilise small amounts of data from disparate domains to build a dialogue manager policy. Previous work has focused on using data from different domains to adapt a generic policy to a specific domain. Inspired by Bayesian committee machines, this paper proposes the use of a committee of dialogue policies. The results show that such a model is particularly beneficial for adaptation in multi-domain dialogue systems. The use of this model significantly improves performance compared to a single policy baseline, as confirmed by the performed real-user trial.     Working Alliance for Clients with Social Anxiety Disorder: Relationship with Session Helpfulness and Within-Session Habituation

    It has been suggested that a strong working alliance encourages clients to take risks during therapy (Raue, Castonguay, & Goldfried, 1993). This encouragement may be important for clients who fear negative evaluations as they engage in risk-taking elements of therapy. This study examined the relationship between working alliance, session helpfulness, and measures of emotional processing in 18 clients undergoing cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder. Results indicate a positive correlation between client-rated, but not observer-rated, working alliance and session helpfulness. Moderate levels of working alliance were associated with higher initial anxiety and deeper within-session habituation. Overall, a strong alliance was associated with clients engaging with the session and finding the session helpful. Implications for the use of CBT for social anxiety are discussed

    Affordable In-Space Transportation

    Current and proposed launch systems will provide access to low-Earth orbit (LEO), and destinations beyond LEO, but the cost of delivering payloads will preclude the use of these services by many users. To develop and encourage revolutionary commercial utilization of geosynchronous orbit (GEO) and to provide an affordable means to continue NASA space science and exploration missions, the transportation costs to in-space destinations must be reduced. The principal objective of this study was to conceptually define three to four promising approaches to in-space transportation for delivery of satellites and other payloads, 3,000- to 10,000-lb class, to GEO destinations. This study established a methodology for evaluating in-space transportation systems based on life-cycle cost. The reusable concepts seemed to fare better in the evaluation than expendable, since a major driver in the life-cycle cost was the stage production cost

    Multi-domain neural network language generation for spoken dialogue systems

    Moving from limited-domain natural language generation (NLG) to open domain is difficult because the number of semantic input combinations grows exponentially with the number of domains. Therefore, it is important to leverage existing resources and exploit similarities between domains to facilitate domain adaptation. In this paper, we propose a procedure to train multi-domain, Recurrent Neural Network-based (RNN) language generators via multiple adaptation steps. In this procedure, a model is first trained on counterfeited data synthesised from an out-of-domain dataset, and then fine tuned on a small set of in-domain utterances with a discriminative objective function. Corpus-based evaluation results show that the proposed procedure can achieve competitive performance in terms of BLEU score and slot error rate while significantly reducing the data needed to train generators in new, unseen domains. In subjective testing, human judges confirm that the procedure greatly improves generator performance when only a small amount of data is available in the domain.Toshiba Research Europe Ltd.This is the accepted manuscript.
