Environmental and human factors drive the subtropical marine forests of Gongolaria abies-marina to extinction
Large brown macroalgae are foundational threatened species in coastal ecosystems from the subtropical northeastern Atlantic, where they have exhibited a drastic decline in
recent years. This study describes the potential habitat of Gongolaria abies-marina, its
current distribution and conservation status, and the major drivers of population decline.
The results show a strong reduction of more than 97% of G. abies-marina populations
in the last thirty years and highlight the effects of drivers vary in terms of spatial
heterogeneity. A decrease in the frequency of high waves and high human footprint are the principal factors accounting for the long-term decline in G. abies-marina
populations. UV radiation and sea surface temperature have an important correlation
only in certain locations. Both the methodology and the large amount of data analyzed in this study provide a valuable tool for the conservation and restoration of threatened macroalgae.En prensa1,95
An endophytic Streblonema (Phaeophyta) associated with galls in Fucus spiralis (Phaeophyta) from the Canary Islands
Galls observed in Fucus spiralis are wart-like protrusions 1-7 mm in diameter, restricted to the midrib of mature plants. Gall structure
consists of a radial and unorganized growth of the cortical tissue as a result of the cells enlargement and division. Plants of F. spiralis
bearing galls were always collected with Streblonema sp. filaments growing between host cells. But the relation between the occurrence
of galls in Fucus and the presence of endophytic filaments of Streblonema remain uncertain in the absence of experimental evidence.
Caprinos-Capra hircu
Deep-water macroalgae from the Canary Islands: new records and biogeographical relationships
Due to the geographical location and paleobiogeography of the Canary Islands, the
seaweed flora contains macroalgae with different distributional patterns. In this contribution, the biogeographical relations of several new records of deep-water macroalgae recently collected around the Canarian archipelago are discussed. These are Bryopsidella neglecta (Berthotd) Rietema,Discosporangium mesarthrocarpum (Meneghini) Hauck, Hincksia onslowensis (Amsler et Kapraun)P.C. Silva, Syringoderma floridana Henry, Peyssonnelia harveyana J. Agardh, Cryptonemia seminervis(C. Agardh) J. Agardh, Botryodadia wynnei Ballantine, Gloiocladia blomquistii (Searles) R. E.Norris, PIahchrysis peltata (W. R. Taylor) P. Huv4 et H. Huv4, Leptofauchea brasiliensis Joly, and Sarcodiotheca divaricata W. R. Taylor. These new records, especially those in the Florideophyceae, support the strong affinity of the Canary Islands seaweed flora with the warm-temperate Mediterranean-Atlantic region. Some species are recorded for the first time from the east coast of the Atlantic Ocean, enhancing the biogeographic relations of the Canarian marine flora with that of the western Atlantic regions
Embriogénesis en Cystoseira abies-marina (Gmelin) C. Agardh (Phaeophyta): importancia biosistemática
The first development stages and the type of segmentation of Cystoseira abies-marina (Gmelin) C. Agardh (Phaeophyta) was studied
in laboratory culture. The embryogenic characteristics are not similar to those of other species in the same genus.Mediante cultivo en laboratorio se estudió la tipología de la segmentación y primeros estadios de desarrollo en los embriones de
Cystoseira abies-marina (Gmelin) C. Agardh (Phaeophyta). Los carateres embriogénicos del taxon no coinciden con los presentes en otras
especies
