A Model for Productivity and Systemic Quality for Systems Development Process
Many authors in the manufacturing industry have affirmed that high quality levels promote high productivity levels . How is it possible to verify this affirmation for the IT sector? How to relate both concepts for the IT sector in a systemic way? The goal of this paper is to establish an initial version of a Characterization Model for the Systemic Quality and Productivity relationship in development systems; based on the Process Effectiveness and/or Efficiency, which is related to the Systemic Quality and Productivity concepts. This model allows the IT sector to access a tool for indicating the expected balance between quality and productivity levels in the development systems process in order to achieve increased market competitiveness. A model was the most important result of this research, which confirmed the initial premise: to offer a quality product with cost reduction it is necessary to increase productivity and strengthen the development process
Issues for Evaluating Reliability in Software Architectures
Currently, the requirements of Business sector promote more and more complex Information Systems. Reliability is one of the quality characteristics widely expected by users and developers. This characteristic is architectural by nature since it can be directly promoted by software architecture. This relation determines the importance of designing architectures that guarantee reliable systems. This article presents a research in progress whose objective is developing an architectural evaluation method based on Reliability. The first step considered for designing the method included: the construction of a Conceptual Model, a model to specify the architectural quality based on Reliability (Utility Tree), a set of scenarios associated to this characteristic. The first model allows identifying the concepts inherent to Reliability and their relationships; the second one covers all quality features related to Reliability in order to specify it; and the scenarios guide the software architect for anticipating context stimulus and evaluating the architectural responses
Disease Surveillance Networks Initiative Asia: Final Evaluation
The DSN Initiative was launched in 2007 under the new strategy of the Rockefeller Foundation. The initiative intends:[1] To improve human resources for disease surveillance in developing countries, thus bolstering national capacity to monitor, report, and respond to outbreaks;[2] To support regional networks to promote collaboration in disease surveillance and response across countries; and[3] To build bridges between regional and global monitoring effortsThe purpose of the DSN evaluation in the Mekong region was twofold:[1]To inform the work and strategy of the Foundation, its grantees, and the broader field of disease surveillance, based on the experience of DSN investments in the Mekong region. More specifically, the evaluation will inform future directions and strategies for current areas of DSN Initiative work, particularly in Asia, and will highlight potential new areas of work and strategy; and[2] To provide accountability to the Rockefeller Foundation's board, staff, and stakeholders for the DSN funds spent in the Mekong region
Uprolides N, O and P from the Panamanian Octocoral Eunicea succinea.
Three new diterpenes, uprolide N (1), uprolide O (2), uprolide P (3) and a known one, dolabellane (4), were isolated from the CHâClâ-MeOH extract of the gorgonian octocoral Eunicea succinea, collected from Bocas del Toro, on the Caribbean coast of Panama. Their structures were determined using spectroscopic analyses, including 1D and 2D NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) together with molecular modeling studies. Compounds 1-3 displayed anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting production of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) and Interleukin (IL)-6 induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in murine macrophages
Water Quality of the Poza Honda Dam and Other Water Points Down
The phenomenon of pollution of water basins is eliminating many potential water resources. Most of the pollution in Ecuador comes from household waste and agricultural chemicals, especially along the coast. One of the activities in the management of the water resource is the periodic monitoring of the bodies of water, being able to determine the different changes that occur and to influence through preventive actions that manage to reduce the pollution. The water resource is the articulating axis of all the activities in a territory and therefore of the populations that develop different productive activities that not only depend on the quantity and quality of this resource but also generate alterations to the natural state of the same. In the investigation, the monitoring of the quality of the water in different points of the Poza Honda dam and of the river Portoviejo is carried out. The study aims to manage the pollution processes that occur in the aquifer, due to the depositions of domestic, industrial and agricultural wastewater not controlled to be discharged
The effect of calcitriol, paricalcitol, and a calcimimetic on extraosseous calcifications in uremic rats
Vitamin D derivatives and calcimimetics are used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic renal failure. We investigated the effect of calcitriol, paricalcitol, and the calcimimetic AMG 641 on soft-tissue calcification in uremic rats with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Control and uremic rats were treated with vehicle, calcitriol, paricalcitol, AMG 641, or a combination of AMG 641 plus calcitriol or paricalcitol. Parathyroid hormone levels were reduced by all treatments but were better controlled by the combination of paricalcitol and AMG 641. The calcimimetic alone did not induce extraosseous calcification but co-administration of AMG 641 reduced soft-tissue calcification and aortic mineralization in both calcitriol- and paricalcitol-treated rats. Survival was significantly reduced in rats treated with calcitriol and this mortality was attenuated by co-treatment with AMG 641. Our study shows that extraskeletal calcification was present in animals treated with calcitriol and paricalcitol but not with AMG 641. When used in combination with paricalcitol, AMG 641 provided excellent control of secondary hyperparathyroidism and prevented mortality associated with the use of vitamin D derivatives without causing tissue calcification
Chalcogenide nanoparticles and organic photosensitizers for synergetic antimicrobial photodynamic therapy
Synergistic antimicrobial effects were observed for copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles together with indocyanine green (ICG) in the elimination of wild type pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureusATCC 29213 andPseudomonas aeruginosaATCC 27853) and also opportunistic fungal infective yeast (Candida albicansATCC 10231). Furthermore, large antibacterial effects were observed for clinical isolates of Methicillin-resistantS. aureus(MRSA) PFGE strain-type USA300. This efficient antimicrobial action was attributed to the combined extra- and intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species upon light irradiation. Instead of the use of visible-light for the activation of common photosensitizers, both ICG and CuS nanoparticles can be activated in the near infrared (NIR)-region of the electromagnetic spectrum and therefore, superior tissue penetration would be expected in a potential elimination of pathogenic microorganisms not only on the skin but also in the soft tissue. In the different bacteria studied a 3-log reduction in the bacterial counts was achieved after only 6 min of NIR irradiation and treatment with ICG or CuS alone at concentrations of 40 and 160 ”g mL-1, respectively. A maximum bactericidal effect againstS. aureusand USA300 strains was obtained for the combination of both photosensitizers at the same concentration. RegardingP. aeruginosa, a 4-log reduction in the CFU was observed for the combination of CuS and ICG at various concentrations. InCandida albicansthe combination of both ICG and CuS and light irradiation showed an antimicrobial dose-dependent effect with the reduction of at least 3-log in the cell counts for the combination of ICG + CuS at reduced concentrations. The observed antimicrobial effect was solely attributed to a photodynamic effect and any photothermal effect was avoided to discard any potential thermal injury in a potential clinical application. The generation of reactive oxygen species upon near infrared-light irradiation for those photosensitizers used was measured either alone or in combination. The cytocompatibility of the proposed materials at the doses used in photodynamic therapy was also demonstrated in human dermal fibroblasts and keratinocytes by cell culturing and flow cytometry studies. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2021
Spatially Resolved Star Formation Main Sequence of Galaxies in the Califa Survey
Cano-DĂaz, M. et. al.The >main sequence of galaxies> - defined in terms of the total star formation rate Ï versus the total stellar mass M - is a well-studied tight relation that has been observed at several wavelengths and at different redshifts. All earlier studies have derived this relation from integrated properties of galaxies. We recover the same relation from an analysis of spatially resolved properties, with integral field spectroscopic (IFS) observations of 306 galaxies from the CALIFA survey. We consider the SFR surface density in units of log(M yr Kpc) and the stellar mass surface density in units of log(M Kpc) in individual spaxels that probe spatial scales of 0.5-1.5 Kpc. This local relation exhibits a high degree of correlation with small scatter (Ï = 0.23 dex), irrespective of the dominant ionization source of the host galaxy or its integrated stellar mass. We highlight (i) the integrated star formation main sequence formed by galaxies whose dominant ionization process is related to star formation, for which we find a slope of 0.81 ± 0.02; (ii) for the spatially resolved relation obtained with the spaxel analysis, we find a slope of 0.72 ± 0.04; and (iii) for the integrated main sequence, we also identified a sequence formed by galaxies that are dominated by an old stellar population, which we have called the retired galaxies sequence.Financial support: M.C.D. and S.F.S.: DGAPA-UNAM funding; CONACyT-180125 and PAPIIT IA-100815 projects.
