Electrophysiological evidence for changes in attentional orienting and selection in functional somatic symptoms
Neurophysiology Objective: We investigated changes in attention mechanisms in people who report a high number of somatic symptoms which cannot be associated with a physical cause. Method: Based on scores on the Somatoform Disorder Questionnaire (SDQ-20; Nijenhuis et al., 1996) we compared two non-clinical groups, one with high symptoms on the SDQ-20 and a control group with low or no symptoms. We recorded EEG whilst participants performed an exogenous tactile attention task where they had to discriminate between tactile targets following a tactile cue to the same or opposite hand. Results: The neural marker of attentional orienting to the body, the Late Somatosensory Negativity (LSN), was diminished in the high symptoms group and attentional modulation of touch processing was prolonged at mid and enhanced at later latency stages in this group. Conclusion: These results confirm that attentional processes are altered in people with somatic symptoms, even in a non-clinical group. Furthermore, the observed pattern fits explanations of changes in prior beliefs or expectations leading to diminished amplitudes of the marker of attentional orienting to the body (i.e. the LSN) and enhanced attentional gain of touch processing. Significance: This study shows that high somatic symptoms are associated with neurocognitive attention changes
The role of tobacco taxes in starting and quitting smoking
The annual five per cent in real terms increase in tobacco taxes proposed in the recent White Paper on smoking has reaffirmed the commitment of successive United Kingdom governments to above inflation increases in tobacco taxation to encourage people to stop smoking. This paper presents evidence on the determinants of starting and quitting smoking using data from the British 'Health and Lifestyle Survey' and is the first to identify tax elasticities for starting and quitting smoking using British data. Self-reported individual smoking histories are coupled with a long time series for the tax rate on cigarettes to construct a longitudinal data set. Estimates are obtained for the impact of above inflation tax rises on the age of starting smoking and the number of years of smoking. The estimates of the tax elasticity of the age of starting smoking are +0.16 for men and +0.08 for women. The estimates of the tax elasticity of quitting are - 0.60 for men and -0.46 for women. E 0336-248 : A New BL Lac Object Found by an Old Einstein
We obtained new ROSAT HRI and optical observations in the field of the
Einstein X-ray source E 0336-248, which we use to identify it as a 19th
magnitude BL Lacertae object at z=0.251 with an X-ray luminosity of 10^45
erg/s. It is also a 14 mJy radio source at 20 cm. An emission-line galaxy at
z=0.043 that was previously considered a Seyfert identification for E 0336-248
is shown instead to be an unrelated, non-active H II region galaxy that lies 78
arcseconds from the X-ray source. The resolution of this historical case of
mistaken identity illustrates that discoveries of non-AGN emission-line
galaxies with high X-ray luminosity should be tested carefully. The properties
of E 0336-248 are similar to those of other X-ray selected BL Lacs, including
its location in an apparent group or cluster of galaxies. Somewhat unusual is
the weak contribution of nonstellar optical light relative to the starlight in
the spectrum of its host galaxy, which raises once again the possibility that
even high-luminosity BL Lac objects may be difficult to identify in X-ray
selected samples. We discuss a possible manifestation of this problem that

Stratospheric Variability and Trends in Models Used for the IPCC AR4
Atmosphere and ocean general circulation model (AOGCM) experiments for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) are analyzed to better understand model variability and assess the importance of various forcing mechanisms on stratospheric trends during the 20th century. While models represent the climatology of the stratosphere reasonably well in comparison with NCEP reanalysis, there are biases and large variability among models. In general, AOGCMs are cooler than NCEP throughout the stratosphere, with the largest differences in the tropics. Around half the AOGCMs have a top level beneath ~2 hPa and show a significant cold bias in their upper levels (~10 hPa) compared to NCEP, suggesting that these models may have compromised simulations near 10 hPa due to a low model top or insufficient stratospheric levels. In the lower stratosphere (50 hPa), the temperature variability associated with large volcanic eruptions is absent in about half of the models, and in the models that do include volcanic aerosols, half of those significantly overestimate the observed warming. There is general agreement on the vertical structure of temperature trends over the last few decades, differences between models are explained by the inclusion of different forcing mechanisms, such as stratospheric ozone depletion and volcanic aerosols. However, even when human and natural forcing agents are included in the simulations, significant differences remain between observations and model trends, particularly in the upper tropical troposphere (200 hPa–100 hPa), where, since 1979, models show a warming trend and the observations a cooling trend
Impact of incomplete ionization of dopants on the electrical properties of compensated p-type silicon
This paper investigates the importance of incomplete ionization of dopants in compensated p-type Si and its impact on the majority-carrier density and mobility and thus on the resistivity. Both theoretical calculations and temperature-dependent Hall-effect measurements demonstrate that the carrier density is more strongly affected by incomplete ionization in compensated Si than in uncompensated Si with the same net doping. The previously suggested existence of a compensation-specific scattering mechanism to explain the reduction of mobility in compensated Si is shown not to be consistent with the T-dependence of the measuredcarrier mobility. The experiment also shows that, in the vicinity of 300 K, the resistivity of compensated Si has a much weaker dependence on temperature than that of uncompensated silicon

The Physical Properties of LBGs at z>5: Outflows and the "pre-enrichment problem"
We discuss the properties of Lyman Break galaxies (LBGs) at z>5 as determined
from disparate fields covering approximately 500 sq. arcmin. While the broad
characteristics of the LBG population has been discussed extensively in the
literature, such as luminosity functions and clustering amplitude, we focus on
the detailed physical properties of the sources in this large survey (>100 with
spectroscopic redshifts). Specifically, we discuss ensemble mass estimates,
stellar mass surface densities, core phase space densities, star-formation
intensities, characteristics of their stellar populations, etc as obtained from
multi-wavelength data (rest-frame UV through optical) for a subsample of these
galaxies. In particular, we focus on evidence that these galaxies drive
vigorous outflows and speculate that this population may solve the so-called
``pre-enrichment problem''. The general picture that emerges from these studies
is that these galaxies, observed about 1 Gyr after the Big Bang, have
properties consistent with being the progenitors of the densest stellar systems

Monte Carlo simulations of liquid crystals near rough walls
The effect of surface roughness on the structure of liquid crystalline fluids near solid substrates is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The liquid crystal is modeled as a fluid of soft ellipsoidal molecules and the substrate is modeled as a hard wall that excludes the centers of mass of the fluid molecules. Surface roughness is introduced by embedding a number of molecules with random positions and orientations within the wall. It is found that the density and order near the wall are reduced as the wall becomes rougher, i.e., the number of embedded molecules is increased). Anchoring coefficients are determined from fluctuations in the reciprocal space order tensor. It is found that the anchoring strength decreases with increasing surface roughness
