This study was conducted to identify and catalogue cultural resources of Spanish-speaking origin in Tennessee. The compilation of cultural resources is designed as a directory. This directory is intended to provide foreign language educators with a helpful and convenient reference guide containing information on the availability of resources that can help them enrich classroom instruction. It is meant to be useful as well to all persons who are concerned with the study or advancement of foreign languages and cultures. This directory is divided into five parts; review of the related literature, methods, cultural resources, suggested activities, and summary. The data for this directory were collected by reviewing the related literature, visiting libraries, searching the Internet; employing telephone directories, interviewing community members, visiting educational institutions and private and government offices, and attending conferences and special events. The resulting resources are organized under headings and subheadings in alphabetical order. The activities section cross-references each activity to a resource in the directory. This study revealed numerous cultural resources of Spanish-speaking origin in Tennessee that offer the potential for innovation in teaching Spanish

This research was to find out how it looks influenced family dynamics when the children reveal their homosexual orientation. To do so, did a semi-structured interview to parents whose children are gay or lesbian. This interview contained a series of questions related to the reaction and action within the family before the manifestation of homosexuality from their children. The results suggest that each one of the families comes to homosexuality from their children in a diverse way, while it is true that coincide in thoughts, feelings and actions. The most striking feature is that in all families, initially will react negatively and manifests an open rejection and concealment of this fact. With the passage of time the situation and family relations improve although parents continue to have difficulties to integrate and accept as normal and continue hiding socially the sexual orientation of their children

8 páginas, 5 figuras, 3 tablas.-- El Pdf del artículo es la versión pre-print: arXiv:1006.2398v1.-- et al.[Context]: The link between how bipolar planetary nebulae are shaped and their central stars is still poorly understood. [Aims]: This paper investigates the kinematics and shaping of the multipolar nebula M 1–75, and briefly discusses the location and nature of its central star. [Methods]: Fabry-Perot data from GHαFAS on the WHT that samples the Doppler shift of the [Nii] 658.3 nm line are used to study the dynamics of the nebula by means of a detailed 3D spatio-kinematical model. Multi-wavelength images and spectra from the WFC and IDS on the INT, as well as from ACAM on the WHT, allowed us to constrain the parameters of the central star. [Results]: The two pairs of lobes, angularly separated by ~22°, were ejected simultaneously approx. ~3500–5000 years ago, at the adopted distance range from 3.5 to 5.0 kpc. The larger lobes show a slight degree of point symmetry. The formation of the nebula could be explained by wind interaction in a system consisting of a post-AGB star surrounded by a disc warped by radiative instabilities. This requires the system to be a close binary or a single star that engulfed a planet as it died. On the other hand, we present broad- and narrow-band images and a low S/N optical spectrum of the highly-reddened, previously unnoticed star that is likely the nebular progenitor. Its estimated V–I colour allows us to derive a rough estimate of the parameters and nature of the central star.Peer reviewe

Garbage collection auto-tuning for Java MapReduce on Multi-Cores

    Get PDF
MapReduce has been widely accepted as a simple programming pattern that can form the basis for efficient, large-scale, distributed data processing. The success of the MapReduce pattern has led to a variety of implementations for different computational scenarios. In this paper we present MRJ, a MapReduce Java framework for multi-core architectures. We evaluate its scalability on a four-core, hyperthreaded Intel Core i7 processor, using a set of standard MapReduce benchmarks. We investigate the significant impact that Java runtime garbage collection has on the performance and scalability of MRJ. We propose the use of memory management auto-tuning techniques based on machine learning. With our auto-tuning approach, we are able to achieve MRJ performance within 10% of optimal on 75% of our benchmark tests

Characterization of EGR cooler response for a range of engine conditions

Fouling phenomenon is a key issue for EGR cooler operation. In spite of the fact that soot deposition is imposed by the characteristics of the exhaust gases flow, the design of the EGR cooler has a significant impact for effect on the engine. New combustion modes corresponding to new engine developments and combination of EGR system with other posttreatment devices make that fouling conditions for future generations of EGR coolers can be significantly different from previous applications from Euro 3 to Euro 5. An investigation has been performed in order to characterize the response of different EGR coolers designs for different conditions of the exhaust gases. As for the design, the technology selected has been tube-and-fin heat exchanger, which is a high performance technology that fits Euro 6 customer specifications. The variations in design have been made through modifications in fin characteristics, both in configuration and geometric dimensions. As for engine operation conditions, the exhaust gases characteristics have been modified from a standard calibration to get more severe fouling conditions, in terms of HC content, opacity, exhaust gas temperature and flow. The degradation of performance has been characterized through measurements of thermal efficiency and permeability. It can be concluded that HC content and opacity have a significant influence on fouling phenomena, and that EGR cooler optimum design is highly dependent on these exhaust gas conditions.Bravo Valeo, Y.; Luján, JM.; Tiseira ., AO. NR2A at CA1 synapses is obligatory for the susceptibility of hippocampal plasticity to sleep loss.

A loss in the necessary amount of sleep alters expression of genes and proteins implicated in brain plasticity, but key proteins that render neuronal circuits sensitive to sleep disturbance are unknown. We show that mild (4-6 h) sleep deprivation (SD) selectively augmented the number of NR2A subunits of NMDA receptors on postsynaptic densities of adult mouse CA1 synapses. The greater synaptic NR2A content facilitated induction of CA3-CA1 long-term depression in the theta frequency stimulation range and augmented the synaptic modification threshold. NR2A-knock-out mice maintained behavioral response to SD, including compensatory increase in post-deprivation resting time, but hippocampal synaptic plasticity was insensitive to sleep loss. After SD, the balance between synaptically activated and slowly recruited NMDA receptor pools during temporal summation was disrupted. Together, these results indicate that NR2A is obligatory for the consequences of sleep loss on hippocampal synaptic plasticity. These findings could advance pharmacological strategies aiming to sustain hippocampal function during sleep restriction
