Even seasoned workers find it tedious and sometimes frustrating to remove Hülle cells and stray conidia from Aspergillus cleistothecia by rolling them with forceps across an agar surface, particularly when large numbers must be cleaned. It can be even more challenging to teach the skill to others, especially to a whole class of easily discouraged undergraduates, who may be seeing their first high-mag image of forceps tips at the same time as their first view of a cleistothecium

Surgical repair of Achilles tendon rupture in dogs: A review of the literature, a case report and new perspectives

Achilles tendon rupture in the dog is a common traumatic lesion. An accurate evaluation of etiology, grade of the lesion with or without loss of tendon substance, and time elapsed from the trauma can guide the surgeon in choosing the best surgical technique. Moreover, the healing process after a tendon injury is usually difficult and uncertain because the prognosis is influenced by extent of trauma, time elapsed between the trauma and its treatment and low tendon vascularization. However, the rapid development of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine could soon result in the development of scaffolds with bioactive proteins that can direct the healing process toward complete tendon regeneration without fibrotic tissue development

Relative echogenicity of tendons and ligaments of the palmar metacarpal region in foals from birth to 4 months of age: A longitudinal study

The objective of this study was to evaluate relative echogenicity of superficial and deep digital flexor tendons, the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon and interosseous muscle of the metacarpal region in foals ages 1 week to 4 months; and assess the association between echogenicity and sex or side/laterality. Seven Standardbred trotter foals were examined. Right and left metacarpal regions (palmar surface) were ultrasonographically investigated, and four regions of interest were assessed. A significant increase in echogenicity was seen in superficial and deep digital flexor tendons, accessory ligament of deep digital flexor tendon, and interosseous muscle during growth from 1 week to 4 months of age. Echogenicity of examined tendons and ligaments was not influenced by gender nor laterality. Reference values for tendon and ligament echogenicity could function as a tool to discriminate between physiological and abnormal conditions such as congenital contractural conditions

The international school psychology survey: Data from Australia, China, Germany, Italy and Russia

Using the International School Psychology Survey (ISPS) this study aims to advance our knowledge of the characteristics, training, roles and responsibilities, challenges and research interests of school psychologists around the world. Data are presented from five countries; Australia, China (Hong Kong), Germany, Italy and Russia. The ISPS contributes valuable information regarding the profession of school psychology in each of these countries. Building upon the ISPS data previously gathered in Albania, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece and Northern England, this study yields additional information regarding the training, roles, responsibilities and contexts of school psychologists. Information from international colleagues provides unique insights regarding similarities, differences and diversity among school psychologists in different countries. © 2006 SAGE Publications.postprin

This syllabus was submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs by the course instructor.To a large extent, the study of the cell and its biochemical functions can be seen as the study of proteins. Almost every function of a cell requires the presence of a protein in roles such as catalysts, processors of information, or essential structural elements. A scientist studying a cell that contains thousands of different types of proteins must have tools to answer a wide range of questions that deal with proteins. For example . . . How much protein is present in a particular sample? How can I separate the different types of proteins from each other for individual analysis? How can I identify which protein in a mixture is the one that I am interested in? How can I measure how effectively a protein is carrying out its function? Where is my protein-of-interest found within the cell? One goal of this course is to give you practical and theoretical experience with some of the basic research methods needed to answer important and fundamental questions like these. A further and equally important goal of the course is for you to improve your ability to reason your way through experimental situations in general. A great deal of emphasis will be placed upon your learning how to plan procedures, carry them out accurately and efficiently, and extract appropriate information from the results. These skills are amongst the most valuable you can acquire because they can be exported to situations well beyond their application in the research techniques learned in this one course
