    The Learning of the subject Biology in a Master in Biomedical Physics

    BIOLOGY is a dynamic and fascinating science. The study of this subject is an amazing trip for all the students that have a first contact with this subject. Here, we present the development of the study and learning experience of this subject belonging to an area of knowledge that is different to the training curriculum of students who have studied Physics during their degree period. We have taken a real example, the “Elements of Biology” subject, which is taught as part of the Official Biomedical Physics Master, at the Physics Faculty, of the Complutense University of Madrid, since the course 2006/07. Its main objective is to give to the student an understanding how the Physics can have numerous applications in the Biomedical Sciences area, giving the basic training to develop a professional, academic or research career. The results obtained when we use new virtual tools combined with the classical learning show that there is a clear increase in the number of persons that take and pass the final exam.     Evaluation of a Local Fault Detection Algorithm for HVDC Systems

    A great increase in the amount of energy generated from clean and renewable sources integrated in the electric power system is expected worldwide in the coming years. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems are seen as a promising alternative to the traditional Alternating Current (AC) systems for the expansion of the electric power system. However, to achieve this vision, there are some remaining challenges regarding HVDC systems which need to be solved. One of the main challenges is related to fault detection and location in HVDC grids. This paper reviews the main protection algorithms available and presents the evaluation of a local fault detection algorithm for DC faults in a multi-terminal Voltage Source Conversion (VSC) based HVDC grid.     Fault detection based on ROCOV in a multi-terminal HVDC grid

    Protection of a meshed VSC-HVDC grid is a challenge due to the behaviour of DC current and voltage signals during fault conditions. Protection systems must operate in a very short time range. Since fault detection should be very fast, local measurement based algorithms are mostly used; communication based algorithms lack the needed speed as a result of the communication time delay. This way, a ROCOV algorithm is proposed in this paper.     foo.castr: visualising the future AI workforce

    Some considerations for different time-domain signal processing of pulse compression radar

    Radar technology has for a long time used various systems that allow detection under high-resolution conditions, while emitting at the same time low peak power. Among these systems, transmitted pulse encoding by means of biphasic codes has been used for the advanced ionospheric sounder that was developed by the AIS-INGV ionosonde. In the receiving process, suitable decoding of the signal must be accomplished. This can be achieved in both the time and the frequency domains. Focusing on the time domain, different approaches are possible. In this study, two of these approaches have been compared, using data acquired by the AIS-INGV and processed by means of software tools (mainly Mathcad©). The analysis reveals the differences under both noiseless and noisy conditions, although this does not allow the conclusive establishment as to which method is better, as each of them has benefits and drawbacks

    Bounded Components of Positive Solutions of Nonlinear Abstract Equations

    In this work a general class of nonlinear abstract equations satisfying a generalized strong maximum principle is considered in order to show that any bounded component of positive solutions bifurcating from the curve of trivial states (λ, u) = (λ, 0) at a nonlinear eigenvalue λ = λ₀ must meet the curve of trivial states (λ, 0) at another singular value λ₁ ≠ λ₀. Since the unilateral theorems of P. H. Rabinowitz [13, Theorems 1.27 and 1.40] are not true as originally stated (c.f. the counterexample of E. N. Dancer [6]), in order to get our main result the unilateral theorem of J. Lopez-Gomez [11, Theorem 6.4.3] is required
