Quantum generalized Reed-Solomon codes: Unified framework for quantum MDS codes
We construct a new family of quantum MDS codes from classical generalized
Reed-Solomon codes and derive the necessary and sufficient condition under
which these quantum codes exist. We also give code bounds and show how to
construct them analytically. We find that existing quantum MDS codes can be
unified under these codes in the sense that when a quantum MDS code exists,
then a quantum code of this type with the same parameters also exists. Thus as
far as is known at present, they are the most important family of quantum MDS
codes.Comment: 9 pages, no figure
Numerical Fitting-based Likelihood Calculation to Speed up the Particle Filter
The likelihood calculation of a vast number of particles is the computational
bottleneck for the particle filter in applications where the observation
information is rich. For fast computing the likelihood of particles, a
numerical fitting approach is proposed to construct the Likelihood Probability
Density Function (Li-PDF) by using a comparably small number of so-called
fulcrums. The likelihood of particles is thereby analytically inferred,
explicitly or implicitly, based on the Li-PDF instead of directly computed by
utilizing the observation, which can significantly reduce the computation and
enables real time filtering. The proposed approach guarantees the estimation
quality when an appropriate fitting function and properly distributed fulcrums
are used. The details for construction of the fitting function and fulcrums are
addressed respectively in detail. In particular, to deal with multivariate
fitting, the nonparametric kernel density estimator is presented which is
flexible and convenient for implicit Li-PDF implementation. Simulation
comparison with a variety of existing approaches on a benchmark 1-dimensional
model and multi-dimensional robot localization and visual tracking demonstrate
the validity of our approach.Comment: 42 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables and 1 appendix. This paper is a

Recent progress in the development of a solar neutron tracking device (SONTRAC)
We report the results of recent calibration data analysis of a prototype scintillating fiber tracking detector system designed to perform imaging, spectroscopy and particle identification on 20 to 250 MeV neutrons and protons. We present the neutron imaging concept and briefly review the detection principle and the prototype description. The prototype detector system records ionization track data on an event-by-event basis allowing event selection criteria to be used in the off-line analysis. Images of acrylic phantoms from the analysis of recent proton beam calibrations are presented as demonstrations of the particle identification, imaging and energy measurement capabilities. The measured position resolution is \u3c 500 micrometers . The measured energy resolution is 14.2 percent at 35 MeV. The detection techniques employed can be applied to measurements in a variety of disciplines including solar and atmospheric physics, radiation therapy and nuclear materials monitoring. These applications are discussed briefly as are alternative detector configurations and future development plans
Generation of Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cells From Mouse Bone Marrow Cells.
Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) are a subtype of glial cells responsible for myelin regeneration. Oligodendrocytes (OLGs) originate from OPCs and are the myelinating cells in the central nervous system (CNS). OLGs play an important role in the context of lesions in which myelin loss occurs. Even though many protocols for isolating OPCs have been published, their cellular yield remains a limit for clinical application. The protocol proposed here is novel and has practical value; in fact, OPCs can be generated from a source of autologous cells without gene manipulation. Our method represents a rapid, and high-efficiency differentiation protocol for generating mouse OLGs from bone marrow-derived cells using growth-factor defined media. With this protocol, it is possible to obtain mature OLGs in 7-8 weeks. Within 2-3 weeks from bone marrow (BM) isolation, after neurospheres formed, the cells differentiate into Nestin+ Sox2+ neural stem cells (NSCs), around 30 days. OPCs specific markers start to be expressed around day 38, followed by RIP+O4+ around day 42. CNPase+ mature OLGs are finally obtained around 7-8 weeks. Further, bone marrow-derived OPCs exhibited therapeutic effect in shiverer (Shi) mice, promoting myelin regeneration and reducing the tremor. Here, we propose a method by which OLGs can be generated starting from BM cells and have similar abilities to subventricular zone (SVZ)-derived cells. This protocol significantly decreases the timing and costs of the OLGs differentiation within 2 months of culture
Sustainable Irrigation Management of Ornamental Cordyline Fruticosa “Red Edge” Plants with Saline Water
The aim of this work was to analyze the influence of the salinity of the nutrient solution on the transpiration and growth of Cordyline fruticosa var. “Red Edge” plants. A specific irrigation management model was calibrated with the experimental data. An experiment was performed with four treatments. These treatments consisted of the application of four nutrient solutions with different electrical conductivity (ECw) levels ranging from 1.5 dS m−1 (control treatment) to 4.5 dS m−1. The results showed that day-time transpiration decreases when salt concentration in the nutrient solution increases. The transpiration of the plant in the control treatment was modelled by applying a combination method while the effect of the salinity of the nutrient solution was modelled by deriving a saline stress coefficient from the experimental data. The results showed that significant reductions in plant transpiration were observed for increasing values of ECw. The crop development and yield were also affected by the increasing salinity of the nutrient solution. A relationship between the ECw and the relative crop yield was derived
Statistical Origin of Constituent-Quark Scaling in the QGP hadronization
Nonextensive statistics in a Blast-Wave model (TBW) is implemented to
describe the identified hadron production in relativistic p+p and
nucleus-nucleus collisions. Incorporating the core and corona components within
the TBW formalism allows us to describe simultaneously some of the major
observations in hadronic observables at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider
(RHIC): the Number of Constituent Quark Scaling (NCQ), the large radial and
elliptic flow, the effect of gluon saturation and the suppression of hadron
production at high transverse momentum (pT) due to jet quenching. In this
formalism, the NCQ scaling at RHIC appears as a consequence of non-equilibrium
process. Our study also provides concise reference distributions with a least
chi2 fit of the available experimental data for future experiments and models.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; added two tables, explained a little bit more on
