3 páginas, 2 figuras.-- Curso impartido en el XXVII Congreso Nacional de la Sociedad Mexicana de Ciencia y Tecnología de Superficies y Materiales (SMCTSM), Septiembre-2007, Oaxaca (Mexico). The Course will start with a basic introduction to biosensors, and will follow with a deep overview of the different physical transducer, with special emphasis in photonics and nanotechnology transducers. During the course, the design, fabrication, characterization, and testing of biosensor devices will be reviewed. In addition, the biofunctionalization techniques for biological receptor inclusion will be studied as well. Further integration of biosensors, microfluidics, and electronic functions on a single sensing circuit could lead to a complete ‘‘lab-on-achip’’ technological solution which could be used for performing in situ analysis. The way of the integration in ‘‘lab-on-a-chip’’ Microsystems will be also reviewed.Peer reviewe

Matrix analysis of discontinuities in nonreciprocal waveguides: analytical description for magnetooptical slab waveguides

    Get PDF
10 páginas, 9 figuras.A new analytical formalism to study the effect of discontinuities in a nonreciprocal waveguide has been developed. The analysis is based on 1) the general orthogonality relation obtained from the reciprocity theorem, 2) the modal expansion of the transverse electromagnetic fields within the waveguide, and 3) the continuity of the tangential components of such electromagnetic fields at both sides of the discontinuity. The formalism is presented in a matrix form, which allows the treatment of several discontinuities as a simple summation and product of coupling and propagation matrices. The matrix formalism is developed for magnetooptic waveguides in the three different orientations of the magnetization, and, within this context, two practical applications of magnetooptic isolators are studied.Peer reviewe

Towards photonic biosensing using a three-port mach-zehnder interferometer in a silicon nitride platform

    Get PDF
Integrated photonics enables sensitive and label-free optical biosensors for the detection of chemical and biological substances and is therefore promising for future lab-on-chip solutions. In this article we present our current development of silicon nitride based integrated photonic biosensing devices working at telecom wavelengths. Our approach of three-port based interferometric sensing circumvents the issues of conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometers, providing a constant sensitivity, and allowing to use a fixed wavelength sensing scheme. Preliminary experimental results show that the fabricated devices work as expected from simulations.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

Decrease of the resonance bandwidth of micromechanical oscillators by phase control of the driving force

    Get PDF
A method for controlling the amplitude response of micromechanical oscillators is presented. The micromechanical oscillator is driven by two forces acting both in phase, a fixed sinusoidal force and a feedback force whose amplitude depends on the phase shift. This dependence exhibits a pronounced maximum when the phase shift is 90°, i.e., at the resonant frequency. Experiments performed with a microcantilever prove that this class of active control decreases the bandwidth of the amplitude response about two orders of magnitude. The noise of the microcantilever, mainly of a thermal nature, is not increased at resonance, and it is moderately increased at both sides of the amplitude peak. Moreover, the noise can be tuned by adjusting the ratio between the two driving forces.Peer reviewe

A systematic review of interventions for Hispanic women with or at risk of Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)

© 2017 Elsevier B.V. Background and objective Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a serious health concern for pregnant women, with Hispanic women at particular risk for developing the condition. The aim of this review was to critically examine GDM intervention programs for Hispanic women, in the United States of America (US). Methods English and Spanish electronic databases were searched for relevant studies published between 1995 and 2015. Eligible study designs included randomized controlled trial, pre/post-test and quasi experimental methods. Results Findings indicated that there was a dearth of literature reporting on GDM interventions for Hispanic women and just seven papers met inclusion criteria. These seven studies were included in the review and they reported on interventions for: (1) pregnant women at high risk of developing GDM; (2) pregnant women with GDM. Results suggest that a combination of intensive counselling over a prolonged period of time, together with a low calorie, possibly low glycemic index diet, produces best results. Conclusion The review found that intensive nutritional counselling approaches which promote low calorie/low GI diets appear to be most effective in BGL management in this population. Interventions that are delivered in Spanish and culturally tailored may be more acceptable to participants. More research is needed to develop suitable interventions to improve GDM management among Hispanic women

Optical waveguide cantilever actuated by light

    Get PDF
We present experimental studies and theoretical analysis of a microcantilever working as an optical waveguide metallized from one side and actuated by light propagating inside it. Light absorbed in the metallic layer increases the temperature of the bimetallic structure and induces the cantilever bending. Dynamical properties of the cantilevers were studied using actuation by light modulated at frequencies of up to 800 Hz. The deflection of the cantilever by 400 nm was obtained while 0.25 mW of light power was coupled inside it.© 2008 American Institute of Physics.Peer reviewe
