    Resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) provides a view of human brain organization based on correlation patterns of blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signals recorded across the whole brain. The neural basis of resting-state BOLD fluctuations and their correlation remains poorly understood. We simultaneously recorded oxygen level, spikes, and local field potential (LFP) at multiple sites in awake, resting monkeys. Following a spike, the average local oxygen and LFP voltage responses each resemble a task-driven BOLD response, with LFP preceding oxygen by 0.5 s. Between sites, features of the long-range correlation patterns of oxygen, LFP, and spikes are similar to features seen in rsfMRI. Most of the variance shared between sites lies in the infraslow frequency band (0.01-0.1 Hz) and in the infraslow envelope of higher-frequency bands (e.g. gamma LFP). While gamma LFP and infraslow LFP are both strong correlates of local oxygen, infraslow LFP explains significantly more of the variance shared between correlated oxygen signals than any other electrophysiological signal. Together these findings are consistent with a causal relationship between infraslow LFP and long-range oxygen correlations in the resting state

    Slogging and Stumbling Toward Social Justice in a Private Elementary School: The Complicated Case of St. Malachy

    This case study examines St. Malachy, an urban Catholic elementary school primarily serving children traditionally marginalized by race, class, linguistic heritage, and disability. As a private school, St. Malachy serves the public good by recruiting and retaining such traditionally marginalized students. As empirical studies involving Catholic schools frequently juxtapose them with public schools, the author presents this examination from a different tack. Neither vilifying nor glorifying Catholic schooling, this study critically examines the pursuit of social justice in this school context. Data gathered through a 1-year study show that formal and informal leaders in St. Malachy adapted their governance, aggressively sought community resources, and focused their professional development to build the capacity to serve their increasingly pluralistic student population. The analysis confirms the deepening realization that striving toward social justice is a messy, contradictory, and complicated pursuit, and that schools in both public and private sectors are allies in this pursuit

    The effect of ilmenite viscosity on the dynamics and evolution of an overturned lunar cumulate mantle

    Lunar cumulate mantle overturn and the subsequent upwelling of overturned mantle cumulates provide a potential framework for understanding the first-order thermochemical evolution of the Moon. Upwelling of ilmenite-bearing cumulates (IBCs) after the overturn has a dominant influence on the dynamics and long-term thermal evolution of the lunar mantle. An important parameter determining the stability and convective behavior of the IBC is its viscosity, which was recently constrained through rock deformation experiments. To examine the effect of IBC viscosity on the upwelling of overturned lunar cumulate mantle, here we conduct three-dimensional mantle convection models with an evolving core superposed by an IBC-rich layer, which resulted from mantle overturn after magma ocean solidification. Our modeling shows that a reduction of mantle viscosity by 1 order of magnitude, due to the presence of ilmenite, can dramatically change convective planform and long-term lunar mantle evolution. Our model results suggest a relatively stable partially molten IBC layer that has surrounded the lunar core to the present day

    Somatic mutations can result in the formation of neoantigens, immunogenic peptides that are presented on the tumor cell surface by HLA molecules. These mutations are expected to be under negative selection pressure, but the extent of the resulting neoantigen depletion remains unclear. On the basis of HLA affinity predictions, we annotated the human genome for its translatability to HLA binding peptides and screened for reduced single nucleotide substitution rates in large genomic data sets from untreated cancers. Apparent neoantigen depletion signals become negligible when taking into consideration trinucleotide-based mutational signatures, owing to lack of power or to efficient immune evasion mechanisms that are active early during tumor evolution
