Alternate islands of multiple isochronous chains in wave-particle interactions
We analyze the dynamics of a relativistic particle moving in a uniform
magnetic field and perturbed by a standing electrostatic wave. We show that a
pulsed wave produces an infinite number of perturbative terms with the same
winding number, which may generate islands in the same region of phase space.
As a consequence, the number of isochronous island chains varies as a function
of the wave parameters. We observe that in all the resonances, the number of
chains is related to the amplitude of the various resonant terms. We determine
analytically the position of the periodic points and the number of island
chains as a function of the wave number and wave period. Such information is
very important when one is concerned with regular particle acceleration, since
it is necessary to adjust the initial conditions of the particle to obtain the
maximum acceleration.Comment: Submitte
Critical Lines and Massive Phases in Quantum Spin Ladders with Dimerization
We determine the existence of critical lines in dimerized quantum spin
ladders in their phase diagram of coupling constants using the finite-size DMRG
algorithm. We consider both staggered and columnar dimerization patterns, and
antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic inter-leg couplings. The existence of
critical phases depends on the precise combination of these patterns. The
nature of the massive phases separating the critical lines are characterized
with generalized string order parameters that determine their valence bond

Potato production impacts of the association trichodorids and TRV in naturally infected fields
An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of soil-born Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) isolates on yield and some quality attributes of 8 potato cultivars (Agata, Amorosa, Almera, Cunéria, Kondor, Picasso, Raja and Stemster) in Portuguese growing areas. Preliminary results revealed that some attributes (canopy growth, total yield, tuber numbers and yield within size grades, tuber spraing symptoms and secondary growths) are severely affected in the sites with viruliferous trichodorids transmitting TRV. It was shown that TRV has real conditions for survival and cause economic impact in potato crop in these regions. Growth laws and self-similar growth regimes of coarsening two-dimensional foams: Transition from dry to wet limits
We study the topology and geometry of two dimensional coarsening foams with
arbitrary liquid fraction. To interpolate between the dry limit described by
von Neumann's law, and the wet limit described by Marqusee equation, the
relevant bubble characteristics are the Plateau border radius and a new
variable, the effective number of sides. We propose an equation for the
individual bubble growth rate as the weighted sum of the growth through
bubble-bubble interfaces and through bubble-Plateau borders interfaces. The
resulting prediction is successfully tested, without adjustable parameter,
using extensive bidimensional Potts model simulations. Simulations also show
that a selfsimilar growth regime is observed at any liquid fraction and
determine how the average size growth exponent, side number distribution and
relative size distribution interpolate between the extreme limits. Applications
include concentrated emulsions, grains in polycrystals and other domains with
coarsening driven by curvature

Unknown: Bluish-gray macules on the hands of a healthy 34 year-old man
A 34 year-old man presented with asymptomatic bluish-gray macules on his hands that had developed over the previous 2 years. He was otherwise healthy and was on no regular medication. A detailed clinical history and histologic examination allowed the diagnosis.Histopathologic examination showed deposits of aggregated granules of black pigment in the dermis, localized preferentially around the sweat glands. This was consistent with the deposition of silver salts. Given the absence of systemic complaints or other signs and symptoms, a conservative approach was adopted. The lesions remain unchanged after one year of follow up.The wide range of uses for silver allows exposure to its compounds (metal, soluble and insoluble compounds) through different routes of entry, namely direct contact, ingestion, inhalation, and puncture. [1] This exposure is usually occupational, iatrogenic, or accidental. [1] Argyria is an exceedingly rare disease that became uncommon because medications containing silver are no longer used and occupational protection has evolved significantly. [2] It is caused by the deposition of silver grains in the skin and is further divided into localized and generalized forms, according to the route of entry. [1-4] Localized argyria is caused by direct contact with silver (the tiny particles penetrate the skin through the sweat glands) or puncture. [1, 3, 4] These deposits remain indefinitely in the skin and are characterized by a bluish gray color, more prominent in the photo-exposed areas. [3, 4] In the localized forms, patients usually don’t have systemic symptoms and the problem is cosmetic. [1-4] Given the improvement in the safety of working conditions, occupational argyria cases are becoming quite uncommon. [1-4
Nanometric pitch in modulated structures of twist-bend nematic liquid crystals
The extended Frank elastic energy density is used to investigate the
existence of a stable periodically modulate structure that appears as a ground
state exhibiting a twist-bend molecular arrangement. For an unbounded sample,
we show that the twist-bend nematic phase is characterized by a
heliconical structure with a pitch in the nano-metric range, in agreement with
experimental results. For a sample of finite thickness, we show that the wave
vector of the stable periodic structure depends not only on the elastic
parameters but also on the anchoring energy, easy axis direction, and the
thickness of the sample.Comment: 11 page
Nonadiabatic coherent evolution of two-level systems under spontaneous decay
In this paper we extend current perspectives in engineering reservoirs by
producing a time-dependent master equation leading to a nonstationary
superposition equilibrium state that can be nonadiabatically controlled by the
system-reservoir parameters. Working with an ion trapped inside a nonindeal
cavity we first engineer effective Hamiltonians that couple the electronic
states of the ion with the cavity mode. Subsequently, two classes of
decoherence-free evolution of the superposition of the ground and decaying
excited levels are achieved: those with time-dependent azimuthal or polar
angle. As an application, we generalise the purpose of an earlier study [Phys.
Rev. Lett. 96, 150403 (2006)], showing how to observe the geometric phases
acquired by the protected nonstationary states even under a nonadiabatic

Hyperbolic Scar Patterns in Phase Space
We develop a semiclassical approximation for the spectral Wigner and Husimi
functions in the neighbourhood of a classically unstable periodic orbit of
chaotic two dimensional maps. The prediction of hyperbolic fringes for the
Wigner function, asymptotic to the stable and unstable manifolds, is verified
computationally for a (linear) cat map, after the theory is adapted to a
discrete phase space appropriate to a quantized torus. The characteristic
fringe patterns can be distinguished even for quasi-energies where the fixed
point is not Bohr-quantized. The corresponding Husimi function dampens these
fringes with a Gaussian envelope centered on the periodic point. Even though
the hyperbolic structure is then barely perceptible, more periodic points stand
