This edition of University of Dayton Review contains the revisions of papers read at the 16th annual Philosophy Colloquium on the theme Aristotle\u27s Ethics and Metaphysics. Six papers address issues in Aristotle\u27s ethics; six address issues in his metaphysics. We are grateful to colloquium presenters for permission to publish these papers as a whole. We especially thank the editors of Philosophical Topics for permission to use portions of materials appearing in Alan Code\u27s paper, and the editors of Classical Quarterly for permission to use the paper of Christopher Shields published in the Classical Quarterly, N.S. 38 (1988), 140-149. Tim Maudlin\u27s paper is a revision of material to be published in a larger work in the philosophy of science and appears with the author\u27s and editors\u27 permission. Regrettably, not all of the papers could be made available for publication at this time. The papers of Lynne Spellman and Randall R. Curren have been accepted for publication in a forthcoming issue of the History of Philosophy Quarterly. Stephen White\u27s paper is to appear elsewhere, and Alfonso Gomez-Lobo\u27s paper is being revised

To describe long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) users’ knowledge, patient-provider interactions, and condom use associated with LARC use. Methods: Data are from the 2018 National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior, a probability survey of Americans aged 14–49. Results: Of 1,451 sexually active women, 11.2% used intrauterine devices, and 3.1% used implants. Approximately 19-26% of LARC users reported inaccurately on LARC longevity, and 30% reported relying on their provider to indicate the timing of intrauterine device removal. Consistent condom use among LARC users was rare (6.1%). Conclusions: Our findings have implications for how clinicians educate patients on LARC and condom use

Painful knee joint after ACL reconstruction using biodegradable interference screws- SPECT/CT a valuable diagnostic tool? A case report

With the presented case we strive to introduce combined single photon emission computerized tomography and conventional computer tomography (SPECT/CT) as new diagnostic imaging modality and illustrate the possible clinical value in patients after ACL reconstruction. We report the case of a painful knee due to a foreign body reaction and delayed degradation of the biodegradable interference screws after ACL reconstruction. The MRI showed an intact ACL graft, a possible tibial cyclops lesion and a patella infera. There was no increased fluid collection within the bone tunnels. The 99mTc-HDP-SPECT/CT clearly identified a highly increased tracer uptake around and within the tibial and femoral tunnels and the patellofemoral joint. On 3D-CT out of the SPECT/CT data the femoral graft attachment was shallow (50% along the Blumensaat's line) and high in the notch. At revision arthroscopy a diffuse hypertrophy of the synovium, scarring of the Hoffa fat pad and a cyclops lesion of the former ACL graft was found. The interference screws were partially degraded and under palpation and pressure a grey fluid-like substance drained into the joint. The interference screws and the ACL graft were removed and an arthrolysis performed

Sexualidade e câncer de mama: uma revisão sistemática da literatura

    Get PDF

Immature psychological defense mechanisms and the misrepresentations of some sex researchers

    Get PDF
The authors reply to a quartet of recent articles in this journal. We detail certain misrepresentations and the dismissal of existing research in those articles (including attempts at denial of the repeatedly documented association of lack of vaginal orgasm with greater use of immature psychological defense mechanisms and other indices of poorer health). The authors also call for a less defensive and less doctrinaire approach to sex research, especially, but not exclusively, when the prevailing ideology in the fields of sexology might be undermining optimal health

In short, the theme of Autonomy and Responsibility becomes more intelligible once two shortfalls are remedied: first, failure to recognize a good reasons model of ethical reasoning in the elenchial activities of Plato\u27s historical Socrates; and second, failure to adequately correct Plato\u27s historical Socrates with guises of Socrates offered by contemporaries such as Xenophon and Aristophanes and by next-generation historians of philosophy such as Aristotle. However, only the first shortfall will be remedied in what follows
