Erythrocyte potassium and glutathione polymorphism determination in Saanen x Malta crossbred goats
This research is aimed at determining the erythrocyte potassium and glutathione polymorphisms and also to identify the relationship among the various blood parameters in Saanen x Malta crossbred goat raised in Turkey. The allele gene frequencies of KH and KL associated with the potassium concentration were calculated as 0.94 and 0.06, respectively. The differences between the mean values of low and high potassium concentrations in erythrocyte were statistically significant (P < 0.01). In addition, there were some significant relationships between erythrocyte potassium types and some blood parameters such as whole blood sodium and potassium concentrations, erythrocyte sodium and potassium concentrations and total monovalent cation concentration in erythrocyte (P < 0.05). The allele gene frequencies of GSHH and GSHh related with the glutathione concentration were calculated as 0.43 and 0.57, respectively. The difference between the mean values of low and high glutathione erythrocyte concentrations were also statistically significant (P < 0.01). Finally, the significant correlation coefficient between erythrocyte sodium and potassium concentrations was observed in this study (P < 0.05).Key words: Erythrocyte potassium, glutathione, blood polymorphism, Saanen, Malta goat
Histopathological image analysis : a review
Over the past decade, dramatic increases in computational power and improvement in image analysis algorithms have allowed the development of powerful computer-assisted analytical approaches to radiological data. With the recent advent of whole slide digital scanners, tissue histopathology slides can now be digitized and stored in digital image form. Consequently, digitized tissue histopathology has now become amenable to the application of computerized image analysis and machine learning techniques. Analogous to the role of computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) algorithms in medical imaging to complement the opinion of a radiologist, CAD algorithms have begun to be developed for disease detection, diagnosis, and prognosis prediction to complement the opinion of the pathologist. In this paper, we review the recent state of the art CAD technology for digitized histopathology. This paper also briefly describes the development and application of novel image analysis technology for a few specific histopathology related problems being pursued in the United States and Europe
Drone warfare and contemporary strategy making: Does the tail wag the dog?
In the traditional Clausewitzian view, political goals and policies determine the character of war, and consequently policy forms the frame in which military strategy is shaped. This paper questions whether current experience has undermined the subjugation of military technique to military strategy, and thus to policy. The example of armed drones suggests that new technique can change the nature of war, including political and ethical views of war. An earlier example of new technique - nuclear weapons - brought similarly broad changes. Against one-way determinist views of the power of new technique, I argue that the interaction of armed drones with strategy, culture and politics has barely begun. © 2013 Taylor & Francis
Arming civilians as a counterterror strategy: The case of the village guard system in Turkey
There are currently more than 60,000 Kurdish village guards in a system that has been fighting against the PKK in Turkey for almost three decades. This article offers the first evaluation of the effectiveness of the village guard system as a counterterror strategy. I argue that the village guards in Turkey proved their effectiveness as a deterrencebased and territory-focused counter-terror strategy between 1985 and 1999. From 1999 onwards, however, when the nature of the conflict changed, the costs of the village guard system in the political and socio-psychological domain have exceeded its value in the security domain. Evaluation of the village guard system in Turkey provides insights which may be useful in considering the formation of local militias in conflict zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan. © 2014 Taylor & Francis
Seventh Son of the East: Sezai Karakoç and His Doctrine of Revival
Abstract: Although Sezai Karakoç has been a prominent figure in the Turkish intellectual life for almost five decades, nothing scholarly has appeared so far to introduce him to the Western academia. Aside from his being considered to be one of the greatest Turkish poets in the twentieth century, for many, he is also an influential intellectual who has put his mark on Turkish Islamism and affected the Islamic community as deep as Mehmet Akif Ersoy and Necip Fazıl Kısakürek. Mainly because of his deliberate choice of being low profile and his distanced attitude towards media, he is not a widely known figure in the popular political arena. His ideas, however, have influenced many politicians in the contemporary Turkish Politics, particularly the elite cadres of currently running the Justice and Development Party (JDP). It is appealing to notice that a great number of policies he formulated in 1980s and 1990s have been developed and implemented by the JDP government. To elucidate Sezai Karakoç's intellectual depth and cultural vision, this study, first, introduces him, then opens up his conceptualization of civilization the grasp of which seems to constitute a fertile ground for the JDP's political rhetoric both for domestic and regional audiences, and lastly reveals his “doctrine of revival.” © 2015, Taylor & Francis
Theory or Attitude? A Comparative Analysis of Turkish Newspaper Articles on Turkish Foreign Policy, June 2008-June 2011
Turkish Foreign Policy (FP) has seen a paradigmatic transformation. This study presents a comparative analysis of 1535 articles, written by more than a hundred columnists and published in ten Turkish newspapers between June 2008 and June 2011. Results show a strong polarization of opinion such that articles with realist theoretical stance are highly likely to be critical of the Justice and Development Party's (AKP) FP for Turkey, whereas articles with liberal and constructivist theoretical stance are highly likely to have pro-government positioning. In this close association, the question is whether attitude to government policy precedes or follows theoretical stance. Results suggest that newspapers employ mostly whatever theory will support their stance for or against the AKP's new-era FP. In addition, results suggest little attention to Turkey's bid for European Union membership and little attention to world problems outside the Middle East. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
Nonlinear subband decomposition structures in GF-(N) arithmetic

Detection of microcalcifications in mammograms using higher order statistics

mammograms is described. In this method, the mammogram image
is first processed by a subband decomposition filterbank. The
bandpass subimage is divided into overlapping square regions
in which skewness and kurtosis as measures of the asymmetry
and impulsiveness of the distribution are estimated. The detection
method utilizes these two parameters. A region with high
positive skewness and kurtosis is marked as a region of interest.
Simulation results show that this method is successful in detecting
regions with microcalcifications
Content-adaptive color transform for image compression

is introduced. In each block of the image, coefficients of the color
transform are determined from the previously compressed neighboring
blocks using weighted sums of the RGB pixel values, making the transform
block-specific. There is no need to transmit or store the transform coeffi-
cients because they are estimated from previous blocks. The compression
efficiency of the transform is demonstrated using the JPEG image coding
scheme. In general, the suggested transformation results in better peak
signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) values for a given compression level. ( C) 2011

Whole slide image registration for the study of tumor heterogeneity
Consecutive thin sections of tissue samples make it possible to study local
variation in e.g. protein expression and tumor heterogeneity by staining for a
new protein in each section. In order to compare and correlate patterns of
different proteins, the images have to be registered with high accuracy. The
problem we want to solve is registration of gigapixel whole slide images (WSI).
This presents 3 challenges: (i) Images are very large; (ii) Thin sections
result in artifacts that make global affine registration prone to very large
local errors; (iii) Local affine registration is required to preserve correct
tissue morphology (local size, shape and texture). In our approach we compare
WSI registration based on automatic and manual feature selection on either the
full image or natural sub-regions (as opposed to square tiles). Working with
natural sub-regions, in an interactive tool makes it possible to exclude
regions containing scientifically irrelevant information. We also present a new
way to visualize local registration quality by a Registration Confidence Map
(RCM). With this method, intra-tumor heterogeneity and charateristics of the
