XMM-Newton and Deep Optical Observations of the OTELO fields: the Groth-Westphal Strip
OTELO (OSIRIS Tunable Emission Line Object Survey) will be carried out with
the OSIRIS instrument at the 10 m GTC telescope at La Palma, and is aimed to be
the deepest and richest survey of emission line objects to date. The deep
narrow-band optical data from OSIRIS will be complemented by means of
additional observations that include: (i) an exploratory broad-band survey that
is already being carried out in the optical domain, (ii) FIR and sub-mm
observations to be carried with the Herschel space telescope and the GTM, and
(iii) deep X-Ray observations from XMM-Newton and Chandra.Here we present a
preliminary analysis of public EPIC data of one of the OTELO targets,the
Groth-Westphal strip, gathered from the XMM-Newton Science Archive (XSA). EPIC
images are combined with optical BVRI data from our broadband survey carried
out with the 4.2m WHT at La Palma. Distance-independent diagnostics (involving

Deformations of canonical triple covers
In this paper, we show that if X is a smooth variety of general type of dimension m≥3 for which the canonical map induces a triple cover onto Y, where Y is a projective bundle over P1 or onto a projective space or onto a quadric hypersurface, embedded by a complete linear series (except Q3 embedded in P4), then the general deformation of the canonical morphism of X is again canonical and induces a triple cover. The extremal case when Y is embedded as a variety of minimal degree is of interest, due to its appearance in numerous situations. For instance, by looking at threefolds Y of minimal degree we find components of the moduli of threefolds X of general type with KX3=3pg−9,KX3≠6, whose general members correspond to canonical triple covers. Our results are especially interesting as well because they have no lower dimensional analogues
Deformations of canonical double covers
In this paper we show that if X is a smooth variety of general type of dimension m≥2 for which its canonical map induces a double cover onto Y, where Y is the projective space, a smooth quadric hypersurface or a smooth projective bundle over P1, embedded by a complete linear series, then the general deformation of the canonical morphism of X is again canonical and induces a double cover. The second part of the article proves the non-existence of canonical double structures on the rational varieties above mentioned. Our results have consequences for the moduli of varieties of general type of arbitrary dimension, since they show that infinitely many moduli spaces of higher dimensional varieties of general type have an entire “hyperelliptic” component. This is in sharp contrast with the case of curves or surfaces of lower Kodaira dimension
A minor-merger origin for inner disks and rings in early-type galaxies
Nuclear disks and rings are frequent galaxy substructures, for a wide range
of morphological types (from S0 to Sc). We have investigated the possible
minor-merger origin of inner disks and rings in spiral galaxies through
collisionless N-body simulations. The models confirm that minor mergers can
drive the formation of thin, kinematically-cold structures in the center of
galaxies out of satellite material, without requiring the previous formation of
a bar. Satellite core particles tend to be deposited in circular orbits in the
central potential, due to the strong circularization experienced by the
satellite orbit through dynamical friction. The material of the satellite core
reaches the remnant center if satellites are dense or massive, building up a
thin inner disk; whereas it is fully disrupted before reaching the center in

Evolution along the sequence of S0 Hubble types induced by dry minor mergers. II - Bulge-disk coupling in the photometric relations through merger-induced internal secular evolution
Galaxy mergers are considered as questionable mechanisms for the evolution of
lenticular galaxies (S0's), on the basis that even minor ones induce structural
changes that are difficult to reconcile with the strong bulge-disk coupling
observed in the photometric scaling relations of S0's. We check if the
evolution induced onto S0's by dry intermediate and minor mergers can reproduce
their photometric scaling relations, analysing the bulge-disk decompositions of
the merger simulations presented in Eliche-Moral et al. (2012). The mergers
induce an evolution in the photometric planes compatible with the data of S0's,
even in those ones indicating a strong bulge-disk coupling. The mergers drive
the formation of the observed photometric relation in some cases, whereas they
induce a slight dispersion compatible with data in others. Therefore, this
evolutionary mechanism tends to preserve these scaling relations. In those
photometric planes where the morphological types segregate, the mergers always
induce evolution towards the region populated by S0's. The structural coupling
of the bulge and the disk is preserved or reinforced because the mergers
trigger internal secular processes in the primary disk that induce significant
bulge growth, even although these models do not induce bars. Intermediate and
minor mergers can thus be considered as plausible mechanisms for the evolution
of S0's attending to their photometric scaling relations, as they can preserve
and even strengthen any pre-existing structural bulge-disk coupling, triggering
significant internal secular evolution (even in the absence of bars or
dissipational effects). This means that it may be difficult to isolate the
effects of pure internal secular evolution from those of the merger-driven one

Management of diabetic macular edema patients in clinical practice in Spain
Purpose: Diabetic macular edema is the main cause of blindness in diabetic patients. Vascular endothelial growth factor is involved in diabetic macular edema pathogenesis. Vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors are an important option in diabetic macular edema therapy. This survey investigates actual clinical practice in diabetic macular edema in Spain.
Methods: An expert advisory panel of 17 Spanish ophthalmologists developed a 30-item anonymous questionnaire about diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up in diabetic macular edema. A total of 137 ophthalmologists from 10 Spanish regions completed the questionnaire online.
Results: Almost all of the respondents (99.3%) record the measured visual acuity and perform biomicroscopic anterior (94.9%) and posterior (91.2%) segment examinations. Similarly, 100% of responding ophthalmologists always/almost always or frequently perform optical coherence tomography. Most respondents (65%) always/almost always or frequently perform a retinography. More than 50% rarely perform fluorescein angiography. Nearly, all (96.4%) of the specialists responded that, in center-involved diabetic macular edema, the first treatment is an anti–vascular endothelial growth factor drug. For corticosteroids, the first choice of most respondents (91.2%) was the dexamethasone implant. In the follow-up, almost all (96.4%) specialists record the measured visual acuity and most also perform biomicroscopic anterior (82.5%) and posterior (83.2%) segment examination.
Conclusion: This survey shows the actual clinical practice in diabetic macular edema in Spain, finding that anti–vascular endothelial growth factor therapy is frequently used, and that diagnosis, treatments, and follow-up examinations used by specialists are homogeneous and according to diabetic macular edema guidelines
Steel heat treating: Mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of a problem arising in the automotive industry
We describe a mathematical model for the industrial heating and cooling processes of a steel workpiece representing the steering rack of an automobile. The goal of steel heat treating is to provide a hardened surface on critical parts of the workpiece while keeping the rest soft and ductile in order to reduce fatigue. The high hardness is due to the phase transformation of steel accompanying the rapid cooling. This work takes into account both heating-cooling stage and viscoplastic model. Once the general mathematical formulation is derived, we can perform some numerical simulations
155-day Periodicity in Solar Cycles 3 and 4
The near 155 days solar periodicity, so called Rieger periodicity, was first
detected in solar flares data and later confirmed with other important solar
indices. Unfortunately, a comprehensive analysis on the occurrence of this
periodicity during previous centuries can be further complicated due to the
poor quality of the sunspot number time-series. We try to detect the Rieger
periodicity during the solar cycles 3 and 4 using information on aurorae
observed at mid and low latitudes. We use two recently discovered aurora
datasets, observed in the last quarter of the 18th century from UK and Spain.
Besides simple histograms of time between consecutive events we analyse monthly
series of number of aurorae observed using different spectral analysis (MTM and
Wavelets). The histograms show the probable presence of Rieger periodicity
during cycles 3 and 4. However different spectral analysis applied has only
