    Complex amplitude phase motion in Dalitz plot heavy meson three body decay

    We propose a method to determine the phase motion of a complex amplitude in three body heavy meson decays. We show that the phase variation of a complex amplitude can be directly revealed through the interference observed in the Dalitz Plot region where it crosses with a well established resonant state. This method could be applied to the decays \d3pi and D+Kπ+π+D^+\to K^-\pi^+\pi^+, to determine whether the low mass states σ\sigma and κ\kappa, suggested by E791, have phase motions compatible with resonances.Comment: To appear in Physics Letters

    Increase in environmental temperature affects exploratory behaviour, anxiety and social preference in Danio rerio

    The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of a temperature increase on the behaviour of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) maintained for 21 days at 34 °C (treatment) and 26 °C (control). The temperatures chosen are within the vital range of zebrafish and correspond to temperatures that this species encounters in the natural environment. Previous results showed that the same treatment affects the brain proteome and the behaviour of adult zebrafish by producing alterations in the proteins involved in neurotransmitter release and synaptic function and impairing fish exploratory behaviour. In this study, we have investigated the performance of treated and control zebrafish during environmental exploration by using four behavioural tests (novel tank diving, light and dark preference, social preference and mirror biting) that are paradigms for assessing the state of anxiety, boldness, social preference and aggressive behaviour, respectively. The results showed that heat treatment reduces anxiety and increases the boldness of zebrafish, which spent more time in potentially dangerous areas of the tank such as the top and the uncovered bright area and at a distance from the social group, thus decreasing protection for the zebrafish. These data suggest that the increase in ambient temperature may compromise zebrafish survival rate in the natural environment

    Effect of CH4_{4} addition on excess electron mobility in liquid Kr

    The excess electrons mobility μ\mu has been measured recently in liquid mixtures of Kr and CH4_{4} as a function of the electric field up to E104V/cmE\approx 10^{4} V/cm and of the CH4_{4} concentration xx up to x10x \approx 10 % , at temperatures T130K,T\approx 130 K, fairly close to the normal boiling point of Kr (Tb120K)(T_{b}\approx 120 K)(folegani). We present here new data which extend the previous set in the region of low electric field. The experimental results are interpreted in terms of a kinetic model previously proposed to explain the concentration dependent behavior of μ\mu in liquid Ar--Kr and Ar--Xe mixtures. The main result is that CH4_{4} is more effective in enhancing energy--transfer rather than momentum--transfer in comparison with mixtures of liquified noble gases. The field dependence of μ\mu is quite complicate. In particular, at intermediate values of the field, there appears to be a crossover between two different electric--field dependent behaviors of μ.\mu. The electric field strength at crossover is well correlated with the concentration of CH4._{4}. This fact suggests that different excitations of the molecular solute might be involved in the momentum-- and energy--transfer processes for different values of the mean electron energy.Comment: 17, pages,7 figures, RevTeX4, submitted to J.Chem.Phy

    Abstract Electron drift velocities have been measured in liquid krypton, pure and mixed with methane at different concentrations (1–10% in volume) versus electric field strength, and a possible effect of methane on electron lifetime has been investigated. While no effect on lifetime could be detected, since lifetimes were in all cases longer than what measurable, a very large increase in drift velocity (up to a factor 6) has been measured

    Corrections to the generalized vector dominance due to diffractive rho_3 production

    The idea of the vector dominance is still in use in various analyses of experimental data of photon-hadron reactions. It makes sense, therefore, to recast results of microscopic calculations of such reactions in this language. Here we present the diffractive DIS ρ3\rho_3 production as a specific correction to the generalized vector dominance. We perform a coupled channel analysis of spin-orbital excitations in diffractive photoproduction and reiterate the point that rho_3 in diffractive DIS will be sensitive to a novel aspect of diffraction.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

    Discrete Ambiguities in the Measurement of the Weak Phase Gamma

    Several time-independent methods have been devised for measuring the phase gamma of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle. It is shown that such measurements generally suffer from discrete ambiguity which is at least 8-fold, not 4-fold as commonly stated. This has serious experimental implications, which are explored in methods involving B->DK decays.     Hadronic Charmed Meson Decays Involving Tensor Mesons

    Charmed meson decays into a pseudoscalar meson P and a tensor meson T are studied. The charm to tensor meson transition form factors are evaluated in the Isgur-Scora-Grinstein-Wise (ISGW) quark model. It is shown that the Cabibbo-allowed decay Ds+f2(1270)π+D_s^+\to f_2(1270)\pi^+ is dominated by the W-annihilation contribution and has the largest branching ratio in DTPD\to TP decays. We argue that the Cabibbo-suppressed mode D+f2(1270)π+D^+\to f_2(1270)\pi^+ should be suppressed by one order of magnitude relative to Ds+f2(1270)π+D_s^+\to f_2(1270)\pi^+. When the finite width effect of the tensor resonances is taken into account, the decay rate of DTPD\to TP is generally enhanced by a factor of 232\sim 3. Except for Ds+f2(1270)π+D_s^+\to f_2(1270)\pi^+, the predicted branching ratios of DTPD\to TP decays are in general too small by one to two orders of magnitude compared to experiment. However, it is very unlikely that the DTD\to T transition form factors can be enhanced by a factor of 353\sim 5 within the ISGW quark model to account for the discrepancy between theory and experiment. As many of the current data are still preliminary and lack sufficient statistic significance, more accurate measurements are needed to pin down the issue.Comment: 11 page

    Implications of factorization for the determination of hadronic form factors in D_s^+ \ra \phi transition

    Using factorization we determine the allowed domains of the ratios of form factors, x=A2(0)/A1(0)x = A_2(0)/A_1(0) and y=V(0)/A1(0)y = V(0)/A_1(0), from the experimentally measured ratio R_h \equiv \Gamma(D_s^+ \ra \phi \rho^+)/\Gamma(D_s^+ \ra \phi \pi^+) assuming three different scenarios for the q2q^2-dependence of the form factors. We find that the allowed domains overlap with those obtained by using the experimentally measured ratio R_{s\ell} = \Gamma(D^+_s \ra \phi \ell^+ \nu_{\ell})/\Gamma(D^+_s \ra \phi \pi^+) provided that the phenomenological parameter a1a_1 is 1.231.23. Such a comparison presents a genuine test of factorization. We calculate the longitudinal polarization fraction, \Gamma_L/\Gamma \equiv \Gamma(D_s^+ \ra \phi_L \rho^+_L)/\Gamma(D_s^+ \ra \phi \rho^+), in the three scenarios for the q2q^2-dependence of the form factors and emphasize the importance of measuring ΓL/Γ\Gamma_L/\Gamma . Finally we discuss the q2q^2-distribution of the semileptonic decay and find that it is rather insensitive to the scenarios for the q2q^2-dependence of the form factors, and unless very accurate data can be obtained it is unlikely to discriminate between the different scenarios. Useful information on the value of xx might be obtained by the magnitude of the q2q^2-distribution near q2=0q^2 = 0. However the most precise information on xx and yy would come from the knowledge of the longitudinal and left-right transverse polarizations of the final vector mesons in hadronic and/or semileptonic decays.Comment: Latex 10 pages( 4 figures), PAR/LPTHE/94-3

    Enhanced CP Violation with BKD0(D0)B\to K D^0 (\overline D^0) Modes and Extraction of the CKM Angle gamma

    The Gronau-London-Wyler (GLW) method extracts the CKM angle γ\gamma by measuring B±B^\pm decay rates involving D0/D0D^0/\overline D^0 mesons. Since that method necessitates the interference between two amplitudes that are significantly different in magnitude, the resulting asymmetries tend to be small. CP violation can be greatly enhanced for decays to final states that are common to both D^0 and D0\overline D^0 and that are not CP eigenstates. In particular, large asymmetries are possible for final states f such that D0fD^0\to f is doubly Cabibbo suppressed while D0f\overline D^0\to f is Cabibbo allowed. The measurement of interference effects in two such modes allows the extraction of γ\gamma without prior knowledge of Br(BKD0)Br(B^-\to K^- \overline D^0), which may be difficult to determine due to backgrounds.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, no figure

    Measurement of the Omega_c Lifetime

    We present the measurement of the lifetime of the Omega_c we have performed using three independent data samples from two different decay modes. Using a Sigma- beam of 340 GeV/c we have obtained clean signals for the Omega_c decaying into Xi- K- pi+ pi+ and Omega- pi+ pi- pi+, avoiding topological cuts normally used in charm analysis. The short but measurable lifetime of the Omega_c is demonstrated by a clear enhancement of the signals at short but finite decay lengths. Using a continuous maximum likelihood method we determined the lifetime to be tau(Omega_c) = 55 +13-11(stat) +18-23(syst) fs. This makes the Omega_c the shortest living weakly decaying particle observed so far. The short value of the lifetime confirms the predicted pattern of the charmed baryon lifetimes and demonstrates that the strong interaction plays a vital role in the lifetimes of charmed hadrons.Comment: 15 pages, including 7 figures; gzipped, uuencoded postscrip
