A variational approach to the study of capillary phenomena
The problem of determining the free surface of a liquid in a capillary tube, and of a liquid drop, sitting first on a horizontal plane and then on more general surfaces is considered. With some modifications, the method applies to the study of pendent drops and of rotating drops as well. The standard capillary problem, i.e. the determination of the free surface of a liquid in a thin tube of general cross section, which resuls from the simultaneous action of surface tension, boundary adhesion and gravity is discussed. It turns out that in this case the existence of the solution surface depends heavily on the validity of a simple geometric condition about the mean curvature of the boundary curve of the cross section of the capillary tube. Some particular examples of physical interest are also be discussed. Liquid drops sitting on or hanging from a fixed horizontal plane are discussed. The symmetry of the solutions (which can actually be proved, as consequence of a general symmetrization argument) now plays the chief role in deriving both the existence and the regularity of energy-minimizing configurations. When symmetry fails (this is the case, for example, when the contact angle between the drop and the plate is not constant, or when the supporting surface is not itself symmetric), then more sophisticated methods must be used. The prescribed mean curvature equation in weakly regular domains
We show that the characterization of existence and uniqueness up to vertical
translations of solutions to the prescribed mean curvature equation, originally
proved by Giusti in the smooth case, holds true for domains satisfying very
mild regularity assumptions. Our results apply in particular to the
non-parametric solutions of the capillary problem for perfectly wetting fluids
in zero gravity. Among the essential tools used in the proofs, we mention a
\textit{generalized Gauss-Green theorem} based on the construction of the weak
normal trace of a vector field with bounded divergence, in the spirit of
classical results due to Anzellotti, and a \textit{weak Young's law} for

Effectively transparent front contacts for optoelectronic devices achieve a measured transparency of up to 99.9% and a measured sheet resistance of 4.8 Ω sq^(−1). The 3D microscale triangular cross-section grid fingers redirect incoming photons efficiently to the active semiconductor area and can replace standard grid fingers as well as transparent conductive oxide layers in optoelectronic devices
Emergence of Bulk CsCl Structure in (CsCl)nCs+ Cluster Ions
The emergence of CsCl bulk structure in (CsCl)nCs+ cluster ions is
investigated using a mixed quantum-mechanical/semiempirical theoretical
approach. We find that rhombic dodecahedral fragments (with bulk CsCl symmetry)
are more stable than rock-salt fragments after the completion of the fifth
rhombic dodecahedral atomic shell. From this size (n=184) on, a new set of
magic numbers should appear in the experimental mass spectra. We also propose
another experimental test for this transition, which explicitely involves the
electronic structure of the cluster. Finally, we perform more detailed
calculations in the size range n=31--33, where recent experimental
investigations have found indications of the presence of rhombic dodecahedral

Identification of Giardia lamblia DHHC Proteins and the Role of Protein S-palmitoylation in the Encystation Process
Protein S-palmitoylation, a hydrophobic post-translational modification, is performed by protein acyltransferases that have a common DHHC Cys-rich domain (DHHC proteins), and provides a regulatory switch for protein membrane association. In this work, we analyzed the presence of DHHC proteins in the protozoa parasite Giardia lamblia and the function of the reversible S-palmitoylation of proteins during parasite differentiation into cyst. Two specific events were observed: encysting cells displayed a larger amount of palmitoylated proteins, and parasites treated with palmitoylation inhibitors produced a reduced number of mature cysts. With bioinformatics tools, we found nine DHHC proteins, potential protein acyltransferases, in the Giardia proteome. These proteins displayed a conserved structure when compared to different organisms and are distributed in different monophyletic clades. Although all Giardia DHHC proteins were found to be present in trophozoites and encysting cells, these proteins showed a different intracellular localization in trophozoites and seemed to be differently involved in the encystation process when they were overexpressed. dhhc transgenic parasites showed a different pattern of cyst wall protein expression and yielded different amounts of mature cysts when they were induced to encyst. Risk measures for direct real estate investments with non-normal or unknown return distributions
The volatility of returns is probably the most widely used risk measure for real estate. This is rather surprising since a number of studies have cast doubts on the view that volatility can capture the manifold risks attached to properties and corresponds to the risk attitude of investors. A central issue in this discussion is the statistical properties of real estate returns—in contrast to neoclassical capital market theory they are mostly non-normal and often unknown, which render many statistical measures useless. Based on a literature review and an analysis of data from Germany we provide evidence that volatility alone is inappropriate for measuring the risk of direct real estate.
We use a unique data sample by IPD, which includes the total returns of 939 properties across different usage types (56% office, 20% retail, 8% others and 16% residential properties) from 1996 to 2009, the German IPD Index, and the German Property Index. The analysis of the distributional characteristics shows that German real estate returns in this period were not normally distributed and that a logistic distribution would have been a better fit. This is in line with most of the current literature on this subject and leads to the question which indicators are more appropriate to measure real estate risks. We suggest that a combination of quantitative and qualitative risk measures more adequately captures real estate risks and conforms better with investor attitudes to risk. body. It is a popular imaging technique due to a number of advantages, it is (1) a
real-time modality (routinely 20-30 frames/s or more), (2) inexpensive, equipment is installed
worldwide, (3) portable, equipment can be taken to bedside, ambulance or private
practice office, (4) safe, e.g. no ionising radiation is necessary and (5) widely applicable,
provided that air (lungs) and bone are avoided, all soft tissue can be imaged
Observer variability of absolute and relative thrombus density measurements in patients with acute ischemic stroke
Introduction: Thrombus density may be a predictor for acute ischemic stroke treatment success. However, only limited data on observer variability for thrombus density measurements exist. This study assesses the variability and bias of four common thrombus density measurement methods by expert and non-expert observers. Methods: For 132 consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke, three experts and two trained observers determined thrombus density by placing three standardized regions of interest (ROIs) in the thrombus and corresponding contralateral arterial segment. Subsequently, absolute and relative thrombus densities were determined using either one or three ROIs. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was determined, and Bland–Altman analysis was performed to evaluate interobserver and intermethod agreement. Accuracy of the trained observer was evaluated with a reference expert observer using the same statistical analysis. Results: The highest interobserver agreement was obtained for absolute thrombus measurements using three ROIs (ICCs ranging from 0.54 to 0.91). In general, interobserver agreement was lower for relative measurements, and for using one instead of three ROIs. Interobserver agreement of trained non-experts and experts was similar. Accuracy of the trained observer measurements was comparable to the expert interobserver agreement and was better for absolute measurements and with three ROIs. The agreement between the one ROI and three ROI methods was good. Conclusion: Absolute thrombus density measurement has superior interobserver agreement compared to relative density measurement. Interobserver variation is smaller when multiple ROIs are used. Trained non-expert observers can accurately and reproducibly assess absolute thrombus densities using three ROIs
