    How to portray men and women in advertisements? Explicit and implicit evaluations of ads depicting different gender roles.

    The purpose of the current study was to gain more insight in the evaluation of advertisements containing different gender role portrayals (stereotypical/a-stereotypical) by examining explicit and implicit processes of ad evaluation. The results of two experiments showed an explicit preference for ads containing a-stereotypical images. Implicitly, we found a preference for 'warm' ads irrespective of the degree of gender stereotypicality of the ad. These findings suggest that complex stimuli such as ads may inhibit implicit gender stereotype activation.     Doe one need to go a long way to dig deep? An empirical comparison of online and traditional focus groups.

    We evaluate the potential of online focus groups to trigger deep level customer information, which is the major aim of focus groups. We do so by comparing its yield to that of its traditional counterpart. The traditional focus group substantially outperforms online focus groups in level of disclosure, in number of words generated, and in number of ideas generated. However, participants do not reveal these differences in their self-reports. Further, in line with the view that disclosure requires gradual warming up, we find increases in disclosure during the interview in traditional focus groups but not in online focus groups. We conclude that in its present form, the online focus group is not particularly suitable to yield deep level customer information. Starting from our finding that the difference in communication speed explains the differences in disclosure, we suggest some methodological improvements to online focus groups that might increase their yield.Characteristics; Communication; Disclosure; Focus groups; Group dynamics; Implications;

    Baking quality of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum l.) is influenced by fractionation of nitrogen fertilization

    Non-Peer ReviewedNitrogen (N) fertilization is one of the most common agronomic practice to increase wheat grain yield and protein content. However, the beneficial effects of nitrogen fertilization on grain yield and quality vary significantly [1]. The objective of the study was to understand the effect of total applied N and in fractions on the wheat grain protein composition and flour functionality under western European growth conditions. A field trial with five winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, fertilized with 3 N-rates (suggested, -30% and +30%) applied in 3 or 4 fractions, were studied for grain yield and kernel characteristics, whole meal and flour composition and functionality. Flour quality was analyzed by baking tests and an elaborate screening of the bread quality. A significant interaction between total N and fractionation was observed for both yield and protein content whereas protein composition (gluten index, Farinograph water absorption and Alveograph P/L) was solely influenced by the fractionation of N application. Applying N in four fractions resulted in an overall 3.7% increase in loaf volume compared to three N-fractions.     Differences in gait between children with and without developmental coordination disorder

    In the present study the walking pattern of 10 children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) was investigated and compared to that of 10 typically developing, matched control children. All children walked at a similar velocity that was scaled to the length of the leg on a motor-driven treadmill. Three-dimensional kinematics were recorded with a motion capture digital camera system. The spatiotemporal parameters of the gait pattern revealed that children with DCD walked with shorter steps and at a higher frequency than the typically developing children. In addition, the children With DCD exhibited a body configuration that demonstrated increased trunk inclination during the entire gait cycle and enhanced during the entire gait cycle. At toe-off a less pronounced plantar flexion of the ankle was observed in children with DCD. In conclusion, it appeared that children with DCD make adaptations to their gait pattern on a treadmill to compensate for problems with neuromuscular and/or balance control. These adaptations seem to result in a safer walking strategy where the compromise between equilibrium and propulsion is different compared to typically developing children

    Covid-19 and tracing methodologies: A lesson for the future society

    As the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) surged across the globe, new technical solutions have supported policy makers and health authorities to plan and modulate containment measures. The introduction of these solutions provoked a large debate which has focused on risks for privacy and data protection. In this paper we offer an analysis of the available technical approaches and provide new arguments to move beyond the ongoing discussions. In particular, we argue that the past debate missed the opportunity to highlight the societal aspects of privacy and to stimulate a broader reflection on the actions needed to serve the good of society. With this paper, as well as providing an accessible review of the technical and legal aspects of the proposed solutions, we aim to offer new stimuli to reconsider contact tracing and its role in helping countries navigate the current pandemic
