A novel pyridine-containing aromatic diamine monomer, 4-phenyl-2,6-bis[3- (4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]pyridine (m,p-PAPP), was successfully synthesized by a modified Chichibabin reaction of benzaldehyde and a substituted acetophenone, 3-(4-nitrophenoxy)acetophenone (m,p-NPAP), followed by a reduction of the resulting dinitro compound 4-phenyl-2,6-bis[3-(4-nitrophenoxy)phenyl]pyridine (m,p-PNPP) with Pd/C and hydrazine monohydrate. The aromatic diamine was employed to synthesize a series of pyridine-containing polyimides (PIs) by polycondensation with various aromatic dianhydrides in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) via the conventional two-step method, and further thermal or chemical imidization forming PIs. The inherent viscosities of the resulting poly(amic acid)s and PIs were 0.59-0.73 and 0.56-0.68 dL/g; most of the PIs obtained by chemical imidization were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as DMF, N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), tetrahydrofuran (THF), etc. Meanwhile, strong and flexible PI films were obtained, which had good thermal stability, with the glass transition temperature (T g) of 204.5-237.4 °C and the temperature at 10% weight loss of 527.7-552.0 °C in nitrogen atmosphere, as well as outstanding mechanical properties with tensile strengths of 88.6-90.4 MPa, a tensile moduli of 1.04-1.56 GPa, and elongations at break of 7.2-8.7%. The PI films also were found to possess low water uptake of 0.89-0.98%. © 2010 The Author(s).published_or_final_versionSpringer Open Choice, 21 Feb 201

Density mismatch in thin diblock copolymer films

Thin films of diblock copolymer subject to gravitational field are simulated by means of a cell dynamical system model. The difference in density of the two sides of the molecule and the presence of the field causes the formation of lamellar patterns with orientation parallel to the confining walls even when they are neutral. The concentration profile of those films is analyzed in the weak segregation regime and a functional form for the profile is proposed.Comment: 9 pages and 8 figures. Needs EPSF macros. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between age at menarche and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 42,109 eligible pregnancies from 27,482 women in the Nurses' Health Study II. RESULTS: The adjusted risk ratios for GDM across the age at menarche categories (≤11, 12, 13, and ≥14 years) were 1.34 (95% CI 1.14-1.58), 1.13 (0.97-1.31), 1.11 (0.95-1.29), and 1.00 (referent; P for trend = 0.0005), respectively. Analysis of the mediating effect indicated that 42.1% (P = 0.0007) of the association was mediated through prepregnancy BMI. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested that earlier menarche was significantly associated with an increased risk of GDM. This association was largely mediated through prepregnancy excessive body adiposity

This study was aimed to investigate the disposition and pharmacokinetics of the total saponins of dioscorea (TSD) in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administrated with 3H labeled TSD at a single dose ratio of 80 mg TSD per 1 kg rat. Blood samples and feces were collected at different time points to measure the level of TSD activity. At the final time point, determination of the disposition of TSD in lung, kidney, heart, liver, adrenal, and small intestine were performed. From the blood samples' emission of radioactivity, pharmacokinetic parameters were derived as T1/2 = 33.33 ± 4.48 h, T max = 6.5 ± 0.71 h, AUC = 119400 ± 421097.67, and C max = 2643.33 ± 192.26 dpm/ml. There was 51.609% of 3H labeled substance excreted in 24 h. These results suggested that blood concentration of 3H-TSD was extremely low and the majority of TSD was excreted in the feces. The TSD was extensively distributed to multitissues. The radioactivity level was measured to be the highest in the liver, adrenal gland, and wall of the gastrointestinal tract. The radioactivity of TSD was still being detected in blood after 96 h. This showed TSD was excreted in vivo very slowly. © 2008 Academic Journals.published_or_final_versio

A Geometric Variational Approach to Bayesian Inference

    Get PDF
We propose a novel Riemannian geometric framework for variational inference in Bayesian models based on the nonparametric Fisher-Rao metric on the manifold of probability density functions. Under the square-root density representation, the manifold can be identified with the positive orthant of the unit hypersphere in L2, and the Fisher-Rao metric reduces to the standard L2 metric. Exploiting such a Riemannian structure, we formulate the task of approximating the posterior distribution as a variational problem on the hypersphere based on the alpha-divergence. This provides a tighter lower bound on the marginal distribution when compared to, and a corresponding upper bound unavailable with, approaches based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence. We propose a novel gradient-based algorithm for the variational problem based on Frechet derivative operators motivated by the geometry of the Hilbert sphere, and examine its properties. Through simulations and real-data applications, we demonstrate the utility of the proposed geometric framework and algorithm on several Bayesian models

Anomalous Scaling of Structure Functions and Dynamic Constraints on Turbulence Simulations

    Get PDF
The connection between anomalous scaling of structure functions (intermittency) and numerical methods for turbulence simulations is discussed. It is argued that the computational work for direct numerical simulations (DNS) of fully developed turbulence increases as Re4Re^{4}, and not as Re3Re^{3} expected from Kolmogorov's theory, where ReRe is a large-scale Reynolds number. Various relations for the moments of acceleration and velocity derivatives are derived. An infinite set of exact constraints on dynamically consistent subgrid models for Large Eddy Simulations (LES) is derived from the Navier-Stokes equations, and some problems of principle associated with existing LES models are highlighted.Comment: 18 page

Shortest node-disjoint paths on random graphs

    Get PDF
A localized method to distribute paths on random graphs is devised, aimed at finding the shortest paths between given source/destination pairs while avoiding path overlaps at nodes. We propose a method based on message-passing techniques to process global information and distribute paths optimally. Statistical properties such as scaling with system size and number of paths, average path-length and the transition to the frustrated regime are analyzed. The performance of the suggested algorithm is evaluated through a comparison against a greedy algorithm

KAI407, a potent non-8-aminoquinoline compound that kills Plasmodium cynomolgi early dormant liver stage parasites in vitro.

Preventing relapses of Plasmodium vivax malaria through a radical cure depends on use of the 8-aminoquinoline primaquine, which is associated with safety and compliance issues. For future malaria eradication strategies, new, safer radical curative compounds that efficiently kill dormant liver stages (hypnozoites) will be essential. A new compound with potential radical cure activity was identified using a low-throughput assay of in vitro-cultured hypnozoite forms of Plasmodium cynomolgi (an excellent and accessible model for Plasmodium vivax). In this assay, primary rhesus hepatocytes are infected with P. cynomolgi sporozoites, and exoerythrocytic development is monitored in the presence of compounds. Liver stage cultures are fixed after 6 days and stained with anti-Hsp70 antibodies, and the relative proportions of small (hypnozoite) and large (schizont) forms relative to the untreated controls are determined. This assay was used to screen a series of 18 known antimalarials and 14 new non-8-aminoquinolines (preselected for blood and/or liver stage activity) in three-point 10-fold dilutions (0.1, 1, and 10 μM final concentrations). A novel compound, designated KAI407 showed an activity profile similar to that of primaquine (PQ), efficiently killing the earliest stages of the parasites that become either primary hepatic schizonts or hypnozoites (50% inhibitory concentration [IC50] for hypnozoites, KAI407, 0.69 μM, and PQ, 0.84 μM; for developing liver stages, KAI407, 0.64 μM, and PQ, 0.37 μM). When given as causal prophylaxis, a single oral dose of 100 mg/kg of body weight prevented blood stage parasitemia in mice. From these results, we conclude that KAI407 may represent a new compound class for P. vivax malaria prophylaxis and potentially a radical cure
