    Removing multiple outliers and single-crystal artefacts from X-ray diffraction computed tomography data

    This paper reports a simple but effective filtering approach to deal with single-crystal artefacts in X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRD-CT). In XRD-CT, large crystallites can produce spots on top of the powder diffraction rings, which, after azimuthal integration and tomographic reconstruction, lead to line/streak artefacts in the tomograms. In the simple approach presented here, the polar transform is taken of collected two-dimensional diffraction patterns followed by directional median/mean filtering prior to integration. Reconstruction of one-dimensional diffraction projection data sets treated in such a way leads to a very significant improvement in reconstructed image quality for systems that exhibit powder spottiness arising from large crystallites. This approach is not computationally heavy which is an important consideration with big data sets such as is the case with XRD-CT. The method should have application to two-dimensional X-ray diffraction data in general where such spottiness arises

    Activation process of air stable nanoscale zero-valent iron particles

    Nanoscale Zero Valent Iron (nZVI) represents a promising material for subsurface water remediation technology. However, dry, bare nZVI particles are highly reactive, being pyrophoric when they are in contact with air. The current trends of nZVI manufacturing lead to the surface passivation of dry nZVI particles with a thin oxide layer, which entails a decrease in their reactivity. In this work an activation procedure to recover the reactivity of air-stable nZVI particles is presented. The method consists of exposing nZVI to water for 36 h just before the reaction with the pollutants. To assess the increase in nZVI reactivity based on the activation procedure, three types of nZVI particles with different oxide shell thicknesses have been tested for Cr(VI) removal. The two types of air-stable nZVI particles with an oxide shell thickness of around 3.4 and 6.5 nm increased their reactivity by a factor of 4.7 and 3.4 after activation, respectively. However, the pyrophoric nZVI particles displayed no significant improvement in reactivity. The improvement in reactivity is related mainly to the degradation of the oxide shell, which enhances electron transfer and leads secondarily to an increase in the specific surface area of the nZVI after the activation process. In order to validate the activation process, additional tests with selected chlorinated compounds demonstrated an increase in the degradation rate by activated nZVI particles.Postprint (author's final draft

    Interlaced X-ray diffraction computed tomography

    An X-ray diffraction computed tomography data-collection strategy that allows, post experiment, a choice between temporal and spatial resolution is reported. This strategy enables time-resolved studies on comparatively short timescales, or alternatively allows for improved spatial resolution if the system under study, or components within it, appear to be unchanging. The application of the method for studying an Mn–Na–W/SiO2 fixed-bed reactor in situ is demonstrated. Additionally, the opportunities to improve the data-collection strategy further, enabling post-collection tuning between statistical, temporal and spatial resolutions, are discussed. In principle, the interlaced scanning approach can also be applied to other pencil-beam tomographic techniques, like X-ray fluorescence computed tomography, X-ray absorption fine structure computed tomography, pair distribution function computed tomography and tomographic scanning transmission X-ray microscopy

    Green Synthesis of High Temperature Stable Anatase Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Using Gum Kondagogu: Characterization and Solar Driven Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dye

    The present study reports a green and sustainable method for the synthesis of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) from titanium oxysulfate solution using Kondagogu gum (Cochlospermum gossypium), a carbohydrate polymer, as the NPs formation agent. The synthesized TiO2 NPs were categorized by techniques such as X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope- Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), UV-visible spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and particle size analysis. Additionally, the photocatalytic actions of TiO2 NPs were assessed with regard to their ability to degrade an organic dye (methylene blue) from aqueous solution in the presence of solar light. Various parameters affecting the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 NPs were examined, including catalyst loading, reaction time, pH value and calcination temperature of the aforementioned particles. This green synthesis method involving TiO2 NPs explores the advantages of inexpensive and non-toxic precursors, the TiO2 NPs themselves exhibiting excellent photocatalytic activity against dye molecules

    In situ X-ray Diffraction Computed Tomography studies examining the thermal and chemical stabilities of working Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ membranes during oxidative coupling of methane

    In this study we present the results from two in situ X-ray diffraction computed tomography experiments of catalytic membrane reactors (CMRs) using Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (BSCF) hollow fibre membranes and Na-Mn-W/SiO2 catalyst during the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) reaction. The negative impact of CO2, when added to the inlet gas stream, is seen to be mainly related to the C2+ yield, while no evidence of carbonate phase(s) formation is found during the OCM experiments. The main degradation mechanism of the CMR is suggested to be primarily associated with the solid-state evolution of the BSCF phase rather than the presence of CO2. Specifically, in situ XRD-CT and post-mortem SEM/EDX measurements revealed a collapse of the cubic BSCF phase, formation of secondary phases, which include needle-like structures and hexagonal Ba6Co4O12, and formation of a BaWO4 layer, the latter being a result of chemical interaction between the membrane and catalyst materials at high temperatures

    Patient Polypharmacy use Following a Multi-Disciplinary Dementia Care Program in a Memory Clinic: A Retrospective Cohort Study

    Introduction. Dementia increases the risk of polypharmacy. Timely detection and optimal care can optimize the prognosis for patients with dementia, which may in turn reduce polypharmacy. We aimed to compare the change in polypharmacy use among memory clinic patients living with dementia who participate in a dementia care program, vs those who did not. We hypothesized that patients in the dementia care program would reduce their use of polypharmacy compared to those who were not in the program. Methods. We retrospectively analyzed EMR data from a university memory clinic. The final analytic sample consisted of 381 patients: 107 in the program and 274 matched patients not in the program. We used logistic regression of outcomes (five or more concurrent medications) at follow-up, controlled for the same outcome at baseline to assess the change in polypharmacy, and stratified outcomes by prescription and over-the-counter. Results. The two groups did not differ in the use of five or more total and prescription medications at follow-up controlling for the use of 5 or more of the respective medications at baseline and covariates. Being in the program was associated with a threefold lower odds of using 5 or more over-the-counter medications at follow-up (OR=0.30; p<0.001) after controlling for using 5 or more over-the-counter medications at baseline and covariates. Conclusions. Dementia care might reduce polypharmacy of over-the-counter medications, potentially reducing risky medication-medication interactions. More research is needed to infer causality and understand how to reduce prescription medication polypharmacy
