“You Can’t Dispose of Mercedes Lightly”: Mercedes de Acosta, Queer Women, and Queer Female Desire in the Early Twentieth Century

This thesis is based off of the life of Mercedes de Acosta (1893-1968), an out lesbian who was very active in the literary, theatrical, and screenwriting spheres at different points in her life. While many could consider her a “failed” artist, given that none of her works were financial successes, she is notable in this time period for the noted quality of her work, her many interpersonal relationships (romantic or otherwise) with others in her trade, and her artistic exploits on both sides of the Atlantic. Being out was incredibly unusual for LGBT+ identified people in this time period, and the homophobia of the period paired with the lack of financial success of her works may have contributed to the fact that she died in poverty. This thesis looks at the life and the historiography of Mercedes de Acosta in an attempt to reconstruct what a lesbian identity meant in this period for women and how her lesbian identity affected both de Acosta\u27s life and her relationships, as well as how she was remembered afterward

MakaleWOS:000906995400005PubMed ID: 36455310The study aimed to detect Francisella tularensis (F. tularensis) in water samples and to investigate the seror-eactivity of sheep to tularemia in endemic areas where human tularemia cases have been reported in Ankara, Turkey. For the isolation of F. tularensis, 50 water samples were collected from rural areas of 5 regions of Ankara (Turkey) and selectively cultured on Francis medium supplemented with 8-9 % sheep blood and antibiotics (100 IU/ml penicillin G, 100 mg/L cycloheximide, 80,000 U/L polymixin B). No F. tularensis isolate was cultivated from the water samples. To determine the seroreactivity of sheep to tularemia, 1006 sheep blood samples were collected from the regions, where human tularemia is endemic. A microagglutination test (MAT) identified significant antibody titers, ranging from 1/20-1/640 in 181 (17.99%) of the investigated sheep sera. Further investigation is required in order to evaluate and confirm a possible epidemiologic relationship between human outbreaks and probable role of sheep or other sources

Performance comparison of voltage sag/swell detection methods implemented in custom power devices

    No full text
In distribution systems, voltage sag/swell is known as the most hazardous disturbances which distort voltage stability in sensitive loads. In order to compensate these voltage disturbances via custom power devices, fast and accuracy detection of voltage sag/swell is the most significant issue for effective compensation. Therefore, this paper aims to examine and compare detection capabilities of the most common sag/swell detection methods. In this study, EPLL, SOGI-PLL, FFT and ISRF are assessed among the detection methods. The common point of these methods is that they are applicable for both three-phase system and single-phase system as well. The performances of proposed methods are analyzed and compared for both single phase sag/swell condition and three-phase asymmetrical sag/swell conditions. The methods are compared through constructing sag/swell generation system in PSCAD/EMTDC

Improved adaptive notch filter-based active damping method for shunt active power filter with LCL-filter

    No full text
The LCL-filter has been recently used with grid-connected converters to mitigate switching ripple harmonics. The LCL-filter presents a better attenuation performance for switching ripple harmonics in comparison with L- and LC-type filters. However, the application of LCL-filter has two basic constraints on the circuit design and the resonance problem. These constraints can be effortlessly overcome for grid-connected converters which operate on the utility fundamental frequency. On the other hand, these constraints become a challenging issue when the LCL-filter is used with shunt active power filter (SAPF) because of the wide operation frequency bandwidth of SAPF. This wide operation bandwidth of SAPF causes a narrow bandwidth for the selection of LCL-filter cutoff frequency and the resonance damping control. In this paper, the application constraints of LCL-filter are discussed and the LCL-filter design is provided for SAPF. In addition, an adaptive notch filter-based single-loop active damping method is developed considering the wide operation bandwidth of SAPF. The proposed method consists of a grid impedance estimation algorithm in order to update notch filter parameters adaptively against grid impedance variations. By the help of the single-loop active damping strategy, the proposed controller does not require any additional sensor for the current measurement of LCL-filter capacitor to damp resonance currents. The stability analysis of proposed controller is performed through pole–zero maps. The proposed method is tested, and its performance is verified with comprehensive case studies of a 400-V 80-kVA SAPF simulation model through MATLAB/Simulink. © 2018, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature

Determination of distribution, hosts, damage and some biologic properties of Osphranteria coerulescens Redtenbacher, 1850 (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) harmful on fruit trees in South East Anatolian Region

This study was carried out to find out the hosts, distribution, damage status and some biological properties of Osphranteria coerulescens Redtenbacher, 1850 (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) that causes serious damage on various fruit trees in recent years in Diyarbakır, Mardin and Sanlıurfa provinces in 2002-2003. Studies to determine the hosts, distribution and damage status were carried out in montly intervals during vegetation period, and beating, visual examination of twigs and food trap methods were used for samplings and observations. Some biological properties of the pest were determined in two infested orchards in Central district of Diyarbakır province by weekly intervals except critical periods in which observations were carried out 2-3 times a week.As a result, O. coerulescens was determined being harmful on cherry, apricot, peach, plum, apple, pear, quince, almond, pistachio and fig trees in Diyarbakır (Central, Bismil, Cınar, Kulp and Silvan districts), Mardin (Central, Derik, Mazıdag and Yesilli districts) and Sanlıurfa (Central, Hilvan and Siverek districts) provinces. It was observed that the pest overwinters at the last larval stage in tunnels at the shoots and branches of trees and became pupa at the end of May and first week of June. Adult emergence has started in early june and has continued until late june. It has one generation in a year under ecological condition of South East Anatolian region. Adult damage is not very important, but especially the young trees in some orchards, larval damage was found to be more severe and importan
