Nineteen adult goats of the Blanca Celtibérica breed - in non productive stage - from the experimental flock of Servicio de Investigación Agraria (Diputación General de Aragón) were scored using the lumbar, breast and tail palpation. Sternal triangle joint, lumbar square jointt a ailn tdha t were handled to assess body condition scores were dissected into muscle, bone subcutaneous fat and intermuscular fat. Regression analyses were developed for predicting carcass and body fat depots, using sternal triangle, lumbar square joint and tail compositions like independent variables. The best predictor of omental fat, subcutaneous fat, intermuscular fat, kidney fat, total body and total carcass fat depots was the totaol ff alut mbar square joint. On the other hand8 9, 80 and 86% (PS0,Ol) of the variationo f mesenteric, heart and udder fat depots, respectively, were accounted for by variation in intermuscular fat of sternal triangle joint. Finally, the subcutaneous fat weight of 1 tail vertebra accounted for 96% of the total variation of tail fat weight. In conclusion, the best predictor of the most important carcass and body fat depots (omental, subcutaneous, intermuscular, kidney, total body and total carcass fat) was the total fat of lumbar square.

Peer Reviewe

A decision making support tool: The resilience management fuzzy controller

    Get PDF
In this paper a fuzzy controller capable to perform an automated estimation of the period of time necessary to recover a resilience level is proposed. Estimations where made by considering realistic time-dependent action changes for a set of resilience indicators originally proposed by Cardona (2001) and modified by Cardenas et al (2015). The fuzzy resilience controller works using two output control variables and four input variables designed to resemble politics decisions made over resilience recovery while considering an economical national growth factor. We applied the fuzzy controller onto Barcelona Spain, where different recovery times where estimated in terms of variations in Spaniard GDP (Gross domestic product) inter anual rate of change. This Decision Support System might be helpful to assist disaster reduction planning by allowing decision takers, governs or institutions to achieve reliable recovery time estimations while a proper supervision and control of resilience indicators progress is performed and an open evaluation and scrutiny of applied policies is made.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

On the implicit equation of conics and quadrics offsets

    Get PDF
A new determinantal representation for the implicit equation of offsets to conics and quadrics is derived. It is simple, free of extraneous components and provides a very compact expanded form, these representations being very useful when dealing with geometric queries about offsets such as point positioning or solving intersection purposes. It is based on several classical results in ?A Treatise on the Analytic Geometry of Three Dimensions? by G. Salmon for offsets to non-degenerate conics and central quadrics. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad and by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), under the project MTM2017-88796-P

BIOMECHANICAL ASSESSMENT OF AERODYNAMIC RESISTANCE IN PROFFESSSIONAL CYCLISTS: METHODOLOGICAL ASPECTS

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to measure and compare the aerodynamic resistance (RA) in five different professional road cyclists obtained from a wind tunnel and to establish modification that into a performance improvement. Five professional cyclists from the Kelme-Costa Blanca Team were studied in five positions, four on the aerobike and one on the standard bike. From our results we conclude that establishing small modifications in the aerohandlebars, which result in a more profitable position, can reduce RA. The use of aerohelmet was not shown to be always useful. It is necessary to take into account the technique employed, corrected RA values with the anthropometric characteristics, static vs dynamic assessment when comparing professional cyclists RA

Monitoring Internal Load in Women’s Basketball via Subjective and Device-Based Methods: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
The monitoring of internal load in basketball can be used to understand the effects and potential physiological adaptations caused by external load. The main aim of this systematic review was to identify the methods and variables used to quantify internal load in female basketball. The studies included different populations and events: youth athletes, elite, and amateur players. Subjective methods included using the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) method, and sensor-based methods included monitoring the cardiac response to exercise, using heart rate (HR) as the primary metric. The results showed that the HRAvg exhibited a wider range of values during training than during competition, and different metrics were used to evaluate internal load, such as HRMax, HRmin, %HRMax, total time and % of time spent in different HR zones (2–8 zones), Banister’s TRIMP, and summated HR zones. RPE and HR metrics were the most commonly used methods. However, the use of multiple metrics with little standardization resulted in significant heterogeneity among studies, limiting meaningful comparisons. The review provides a reference for current research on female basketball. Future research could address this limitation by adopting more consistent measurement protocols standardizing the use of metrics.J.E-L. was a predoctoral researcher supported by a grant within the field of physical education, physical activity, and sports and its applied sciences given to the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC), University of Barcelona (UB) (2020 PINEFC 00012). Invasive management of renal cell carcinoma in von hippel-lindau disease

Introduction Patients affected by von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease experience an increased risk for bi-lateral, synchronous, and metachronous renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Oncologic and functional outcomes are the main goals in the management of renal masses. We present our protocol for patients with VHL disease-associated RCC alongside functional and oncologic results observed in our series. Material and methods We performed a retrospective analysis of our clinical database of patients with VHL disease-associated RCC referred to our department between June 2005 and December 2017. We offer surveillance for lesions <2 cm and active management with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for lesions 2–3 cm, and nephron-sparing surgery (NSS), RFA or embolization techniques for lesions >3 cm or growth rate >1 cm/year. Results Our series comprises 14 patients, of whom 13 had undergone at least one invasive procedure for RCC, mean age at first intervention was 27 years (range 18–60). Overall, 30 interventions were performed in 21 kidneys: four radical nephrectomies, 13 RFAs, 12 NSSs, and one embolization. During follow-up (median time: 41 months, range: 6–149), eight patients (57%) presented with new lesions that required treatment, with a mean time between treatments of 32 ±18.5 months. No metastatic progression or need for dialysis was recorded; the success rate for RFA was 85%. Conclusions Management of VHL kidney disease by NSS is the standard of care with a cut-off at 3 cm, ablative procedures should be offered to lesions ranging 2–3 cm in size. Follow-up should be done strictly in referral centers that can provide all treatment options to renal function and control oncologic progression. This research was funded by Madrid Regional Government Research Grant [S2010/BMD-2326 IMMUNOTHERCAN-CM (B2017/BMD-3733)/FEDE
