Computing Volume Bounds of Inclusions by EIT Measurements
The size estimates approach for Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) allows
for estimating the size (area or volume) of an unknown inclusion in an
electrical conductor by means of one pair of boundary measurements of voltage
and current. In this paper we show by numerical simulations how to obtain such
bounds for practical application of the method. The computations are carried
out both in a 2D and a 3D setting.Comment: 20 pages with figure
China, India and Russia: economic reforms, structural change and regional disparities
This paper studies the different patterns of growth of China, India and Russia by exploring and comparing the processes of reforms that have generated and accompanied their high and sustained rates of growth. Focusing on the sector transformations involved into the three economies, we show that the growth strategies implemented present specific characteristics in terms of gradualism and policy choices. We analyze the effects of economic growth on regional income disparities and to what extent the recent increase in prosperity has been homogeneously distributed within the three giants. Making use of Theil's T statistics and transition probability matrices, our findings reveal that income disparities within the Indian states and Chinese provinces have increased and, more in particular, landlocked and rural areas are in general still far from reducing the income gap from coastal and richest regions. In the case of Russia, the great divide is fuelled by the presence of hydrocarbons resources, which tend to be concentrated in the West Siberia
Multiscale optical flow computation from the monogenic signal
National audienceWe have developed an algorithm for the estimation of cardiac motion from medical images. The algorithm exploits monogenic signal theory, recently introduced as an N-dimensional generalization of the analytic signal. The displacement is computed locally by assuming the conservation of the monogenic phase over time. A local affine displacement model replaces the standard translation model to account for more complex motions as contraction/expansion and shear. A coarse-to-fine B-spline scheme allows a robust and effective computation of the models parameters and a pyramidal refinement scheme helps handle large motions. Robustness against noise is increased by replacing the standard pointwise computation of the monogenic orientation with a more robust least-squares orientation estimate. This paper reviews the results obtained on simulated cardiac images from different modalities, namely 2D and 3D cardiac ultrasound and tagged magnetic resonance. We also show how the proposed algorithm represents a valuable alternative to state-of-the-art algorithms in the respective fields
Fate of the Gas-Phase Reaction Between Oxirane and the CN Radical in Interstellar Conditions
The escalating identification of new complex molecules in the interstellar medium claims for potential formation routes of such species. In this regard, the present work considers the reaction between oxirane and the CN radical as a feasible formation mechanism of species having the C3H3NO molecular formula. Indeed, the compounds of this family are elusive in the interstellar medium and suggestions on which species could be formed at low temperature and low pressure conditions might aid their discovery. The c-C2H4O + CN reaction has been investigated from the thermodynamic and kinetic points of view. The thermodynamic has been studied by means of a double-hybrid density functional and revealed the presence of several mechanisms submerged with respect to the reactants energy, with the potential formation of oxazole and cyanoacetaldehyde. However, the kinetic results suggest that the main reaction pathway is the H-extraction, leading to 2-oxiranyl radical and HCN. The formation of cyanoacetaldehyde + H and of H2CCN + H2CO is also possible with smaller rate constants, while the production of oxazole is negligible due to the presence of a high energy barrier
Characterization of ellipses as uniformly dense sets with respect to a family of convex bodies
Let K \subset R^N be a convex body containing the origin. A measurable set G
\subset R^N with positive Lebesgue measure is said to be uniformly K-dense if,
for any fixed r > 0, the measure of G \cap (x + rK) is constant when x varies
on the boundary of G (here, x + rK denotes a translation of a dilation of K).
We first prove that G must always be strictly convex and at least C1,1-regular;
also, if K is centrally symmetric, K must be strictly convex, C1,1-regular and
such that K = G - G up to homotheties; this implies in turn that G must be
C2,1- regular. Then for N = 2, we prove that G is uniformly K-dense if and only
if K and G are homothetic to the same ellipse. This result was already proven
by Amar, Berrone and Gianni in [3]. However, our proof removes their regularity
assumptions on K and G and, more importantly, it is susceptible to be
generalized to higher dimension since, by the use of Minkowski's inequality and
an affine inequality, avoids the delicate computations of the higher-order
terms in the Taylor expansion near r = 0 for the measure of G\cap(x+rK) (needed
in [3])

Impact of climate change and urban development on the flora of a southern European city: analysis of biodiversity change over a 120-year period
Ecological studies in cities are not only aimed at investigating floristic diversity, but also represent informative test cases for understanding ecological system dynamics and responses to urban and climate changes since cities represent microcosms of environmental changes happening globally. The city of Bologna was selected as a case study since two specific and complete studies have been carried out in a 120-years timespan, one in 1894 and one in 2018. Since 1894, a large increase occurred in the number of taxa (families from 41 to 101, species from 176 to 477) and alien species (from 22 to 144), with a 65% total species turnover. The comparison of species life forms pointed out a noticeable recent expansion of phanerophytes and geophytes at the expense of therophytes and hemicryptophytes. The correlation between urbanistic features and plant richness indicated that the main factor affecting plant richness is the presence of green spaces (parks, tree lines, flowerbeds, etc.). Analysis of variation in Ellenberg\u2019s indicator values over the last 120 years evidenced a shift toward shade-tolerant species, mainly connected to the increased presence of parks and trees within the city. Climate change and the presence of artificially irrigated areas within the city has led to an increase in both hygrophilous and drought-resistant species. In particular, the temperature index showed a significantly higher amount of macrothermal species in accordance with a warmer climate and the urban heat island effect
Influence of Blackberry Plants on the Aroma Profile of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Pinot Noir
V. vinifera cv. Pinot noir vines were grown in pots together with blackberry plants and the effect of this association on the grape aroma was assessed. Preliminary data showed that vines that cohabited with blackberry had a different aroma profile compared to vine grown alone. The association with blackberry increased the concentration of 30 out 74 free aroma compounds and of 24 out 95 bound ones. No aroma compound was identified exclusively in the treated grapes
Nails Involvement in Winiwarter-Buerger Disease
Introduction: Buerger disease, or thromboangiitis obliterans, is an inflammatory and occlusive process involving small and medium size arteries and veins, which generally affects the lower limbs of young adult male with the habit of smoking.
Case presentation: This paper reports 2 patients who developed nail lesions as the first sign of Buerger disease.
Conclusion: Signs and symptoms of Buerger's disease are secondary to the inflammatory process and arterial occlusion which results in severe ischemia. Involvement of nails is not common, but we found 2 different clinical features which have not been previously reported in the literature: chronic paronychia, and proximal leukonychia or onycholysis and nail bed erosion
Dynamic Force Spectroscopy on Supported Lipid Bilayers: Effect ofTemperature and Sample Preparation
Biological membranes are constantly exposed to forces. The stress-strain relation in membranes determines thebehavior of many integral membrane proteins or other membrane related-proteins that show a mechanosensitive behavior. Here, we studied by force spectroscopy the behavior of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) subjected to forces perpendicular to their plane. We measured the lipid bilayer mechanical properties and the force required for the punch-through event characteristic of atomic force spectroscopy on SLBs as a function of the interleaflet coupling. We found that for an uncoupled bilayer, the overall tip penetration occurs sequentially through the two leaflets, giving rise to two penetration events. In the case of a bilayer with coupled leaflets, penetration of the atomic force microscope tip always occurred in a single step. Considering the dependence of the jump-through force value on the tip speed, we also studied the process in the context of dynamic force spectroscopy (DFS). We performed DFS experiments by changing the temperature and cantilever spring constant, and analyzed the resultsin the context of the developed theories for DFS. We found that experiments performed at different temperatures and withdifferent cantilever spring constants enabled a more effective comparison of experimental data with theory in comparisonwith previously published data
