    The effects of synthetic wollastonite microfibers on PVA fiber-reinforced engineered geopolymer composites

    In this study, first, synthetic wollastonite microfiber (SWM) with a high aspect ratio (44:1) was produced with a special three-stage production method. Then, fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag-based engineered geopolymer composites (FA+GGBFS-based EGCs) were developed. SWM was used in different proportions instead of FA. The compressive strength of EGCs, changed in the range of 88.1-111.1 and 95.1-122.6 MPa at 7 and 28 days, respectively. Additionally, EGCs containing 6% SWM performed the best, considering both ‘‘increasing deformation capacity’’ and ‘‘maintaining the bearing strength by fiber bridging after crack’’, since they acted like a fiber owing to the acicular particle structure of SWM. Moreover, it can be said that the presence of the SWM mineral in the pore system, ensured pore discontinuities in the matrix because of its acicular particle structure.     Summary: In this research, a total of 298 Eurasian marsh frogs, Pelophylax ridibundus (Pallas, 1771) were collected from different localities in Denizli province (Inner-west Anatolia Region, the eastern part of Aegean Region) Turkey between 2006 and 2009 and examined for helminths. Of 262 (87. 91 %) Pelophylax ridibundus samples were infected with one or more helminths. Pelophylax ridibundus harbored eight species of digeneans (Diplodiscus subclavatus, Gorgoderina vitelliloba, Gorgodera cygnoides, Pleurogenoides medians, Prosotocus confusus, Skrjabinoeces breviansa, Encyclometra colubrimurorum and Ophistoglyhe ranae), one species of cestode (Nematotaenia dispar), two species of acanthocephalans (Acanthocephalus ranae and Pomphorhynchus laevis), and six species of nematodes (Rhabdias bufonis, Oswaldocruzia filiformis, Cosmocerca ornata, Oxysomatium brevicaudatum, Eustrongylides sp. and Abbreviata sp.).     Investigating the Relationship Between Mood and Driver Behaviors: Mediating Roles of Perceived Stress and Driving Anger

    Introduction: Mood and emotion variously affect our behaviors. The present study examined the relationship between positive and negative affect and driver behaviors as well as the mediating role of perceived stress and driving anger. Method: A total of 369 drivers (age: M = 35.52, SD = 10.61) participated in the study by completing the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Driver Anger Scale, the Driver Behaviour Questionnaire, and the Positive Driver Behaviour Scale. Results: Six serial mediation analyses revealed multiple mediations explaining violations the most and positive behaviors the least. Both positive and negative affects were associated with greater anger, leading to more violations. Moreover, positive affect was negative and negative affect was positively related to perceived stress, which in turn was related to increased violations. For positive behaviors, positive affect was associated with less perceived stress, which was associated with more positive behaviors. Conclusion: Moods and emotions reveal a tendency to behave in ways that can be dangerous to drivers and other road users. The study was particularly important because it was the first in the literature to examine positive and negative affect on driver behaviors, perceived stress, and driving anger

    Uptake, accumulation and some biochemical responses in Raphanus sativus L. to zinc stress

    The responses of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) to increasing concentrations of ZnCl2 (1, 5 and 10 mM) in Hoagland nutrient medium were studied. Under the conditions of these increasing zinc concentrations, the highest zinc accumulation was obtained in the roots of the plants treated with 10 mM applications. The zinc concentration in the vegetative parts, was highest in the root and was lowest in the cotyledons. The highest bioconcentration factor (BCF) value was detected in the roots in 5 mM zinc applications. When compared with the control, total zinc uptake was observed to increase in 1, 5 and 10 mM ZnCl2 treatments. The total accumulation rate (TAR) for zinc was highest in 10 mM ZnCl2 treatment, while the lowest TAR was observed in radish plants exposed to 1 mM ZnCl2. Plants treated with 5, 10 mM ZnCl2 showed significant decreases in chlorophyll (Chl a, Chl b, Chl a/b) and carotenoid content compared with the control. Peroxidase (POD) activity especially in radish roots increased significantly with increasing concentrations of ZnCl2 (5 and 10 mM) while the total protein amount decreased when compared with the control. The results of this study showed that, radish plants could tolerate the negative effects of zinc stress up to 1 mM ZnCl2 concentration and that in zinc concentrations of 5 mM and above toxic effects were existent.Key words: Radish, Raphanus sativus, zinc, metal toxicity, uptake, accumulation, peroxidase, pigment

    Time-Kill Kinetics and In Vitro Antifungal Susceptibility of Non-fumigatus Aspergillus Species Isolated from Patients with Ocular Mycoses

    Aspergillus species can cause ocular morbidity and blindness, and thus, appropriate antifungal therapy is needed. We investigated the in vitro activity of itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole, caspofungin, anidulafungin, and amphotericin B against 14 Aspergillus isolates obtained from patients with ocular mycoses, using the CLSI reference broth microdilution methodology. In addition, time-kill assays were performed, exposing each isolate separately to 1-, 4-, and 16-fold concentrations above the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of each antifungal agent. A sigmoid maximum-effect (Emax) model was used to fit the time-kill curve data. The drug effect was further evaluated by measuring an increase/decrease in the killing rate of the tested isolates. The MICs of amphotericin B, itraconazole, voriconazole, and posaconazole were 0.5–1.0, 1.0, 0.5–1.0, and 0.25 µg/ml for A. brasiliensis, A. niger, and A. tubingensis isolates, respectively, and 2.0–4.0, 0.5, 1.0 for A. flavus, and 0.12–0.25 µg/ml for A. nomius isolates, respectively. A. calidoustus had the highest MIC range for the azoles (4.0–16.0 µg/ml) among all isolates tested. The minimum effective concentrations of caspofungin and anidulafungin were ≤0.03–0.5 µg/ml and ≤0.03 µg/ml for all isolates, respectively. Posaconazole demonstrated maximal killing rates (Emax = 0.63 h−1, r2 = 0.71) against 14 ocular Aspergillus isolates, followed by amphotericin B (Emax = 0.39 h−1, r2 = 0.87), voriconazole (Emax = 0.35 h−1, r2 = 0.098), and itraconazole (Emax = 0.01 h−1, r2 = 0.98). Overall, the antifungal susceptibility of the non-fumigatusAspergillus isolates tested was species and antifungal agent dependent. Analysis of the kinetic growth assays, along with consideration of the killing rates, revealed that posaconazole was the most effective antifungal against all of the isolates

    Diversity in boron toxicity tolerance of Australian barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes

    Boron (B) is an important micronutrient for plant growth, but is toxic when levels are too high. This commonly occurs in environments with alkaline soils and relatively low rainfall, including many of the cereal growing regions of southern Australia. Four major genetic loci controlling tolerance to high soil B have been identified in the landrace barley, Sahara 3771. Genes underlying two of the loci encode the B transporters HvBot1 and HvNIP2;1.We investigated sequence and expression level diversity in HvBot1 and HvNIP2;1 across barley germplasm, and identified five novel coding sequence alleles for HvBot1. Lines were identified containing either single or multiple copies of the Sahara HvBot1 allele. We established that only the tandemly duplicated Sahara allele conferred B tolerance, and this duplicated allele was found only in a set of nine lines accessioned in Australian collections as Sahara 3763-3771. HvNIP2;1 coding sequences were highly conserved across barley germplasm. We identified the likely causative SNP in the 5'UTR of Sahara HvNIP2;1, and propose that the creation of a small upstream open reading frame interferes with HvNIP2;1 translation in Sahara 3771. Similar to HvBot1, the tolerant HvNIP2;1 allele was unique to the Sahara barley accessions. We identified a new source of the 2H B tolerance allele controlling leaf symptom development, in the landrace Ethiopia 756.Ethiopia 756, as well as the cultivar Sloop Vic which carries both the 2H and HvBot1 B tolerance alleles derived from Sahara 3771, may be valuable as alternative parents in breeding programs targeted to high soil B environments. There is significant diversity in B toxicity tolerance among contemporary Australian barley varieties but this is not related to variation at any of the four known B tolerance loci, indicating that novel, as yet undiscovered, sources of tolerance exist.Julie E.
