    The original Casimir effect results from the difference in the vacuum energies of the electromagnetic field, between that in a region of space with boundary conditions and that in the same region without boundary conditions.     Thin‐layer inertial effects in plasticity and dynamics in the Prandtl problem

    Especially in metal forming, large plastic deformation occurs in thin plates. The problem of compressing dies is analyzed to evaluate the spreading of a thin layer in between. The velocity of dies is a given function in time so that the kinematics of the process is known. This problem can be considered as a generalization of the classical Prandtl problem by taking inertial effects into account and introducing dimensionless parameters as internal variables depending on time. The first parameter is purely geometric corresponding to the thin‐layer approximation; the second and the third parameters are dimensionless velocity and acceleration during the dies getting pressed. We use singular asymptotic expansions of unknown functions and study how these parameters vary preceding the dies of moment. Depending on this relation, the dynamic corrections to the quasistatic solution is a part of various terms of the asymptotic series.     Anisotropic magnetic behavior of GdBa_2Cu_3O_{6+y} single crystals

    Magnetic properties of high-quality Al-free nonsuperconducting GdBa_2Cu_3O_{6+y} single crystals grown by flux method have been studied. The magnetic anisotropy below the N\'eel temperature T_N~2.3K corresponds to the direction of Gd^{3+} magnetic moments along the tetragonal c-axis. At T < T_N clear indications of spin-flop transitions for H||c have been observed on magnetization curves at H_{sf}~10kOe. Magnetic phase diagrams have been obtained for H||c as well as for H||ab.     The finite size effects of the dynamical structure factors in the XXZ-model are studied in the euclidean time (τ)(\tau)-representation. Away from the critical momentum p=πp=\pi finite size effects turn out to be small except for the large τ\tau limit. The large finite size effects at the critical momentum p=πp=\pi signal the emergence of infrared singularities in the spectral (ω)(\omega)-representation of the dynamical structure factors.Comment: PostScript file with 12 pages + 11 figures uuencoded compresse

    Genetic and serological heterogeneity of the supertypic HLA-B locus specificities Bw4 and Bw6

    Gene cloning and sequencing of the HLA-B locus split antigens B38 (B16.1) and B39 (B16.2) allowed localization of their subtypic as well as their public specificities HLA-Bw4 or -Bw6 to the c~-helical region of the c~ 1 domain flanked by the amino acid positions 74-83. Comparison of their amino acid sequences with those of other HLA-B-locus alleles established HLA-Bw6 to be distinguished by Ser at residue 77 and Asn at residue 80. In contrast, HLA-Bw4 is characterized by at least seven different patterns of amino acid exchanges at positions 77 and 80-83. Reactivity patterns of Bw4- or Bw6-specific monoclonal antibodies reveal two alloantigenic epitopes contributing to the HLA-Bw4 or -Bw6 specificity residing next to the region of highest diversity of the cr domain

    Interfering Doorway States and Giant Resonances. II: Transition Strengths

    The mixing of the doorway components of a giant resonance (GR) due to the interaction via common decay channels influences significantly the distribution of the multipole strength and the energy spectrum of the decay products of the GR. The concept of the partial widths of a GR becomes ambiguous when the mixing is strong. In this case, the partial widths determined in terms of the KK- and SS-matrices must be distinguished. The photoemission turns out to be most sensitive to the overlapping of the doorway states. At high excitation energies, the interference between the doorway states leads to a restructuring towards lower energies and apparent quenching of the dipole strength.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, 5 figures as JPEG, to appear in PRC (July 1997

    Relativistic three-body recombination with the QED vacuum

    Electron-positron pair annihilation into a single photon is studied when a second free electron is present. Focussing on the relativistic regime, we show that the photon emitted in the three-lepton interaction may exhibit distinct angular distributions and polarization properties. Moreover, the process can dominate over two-photon annihilation in relativistic electron-positron plasmas of few-MeV temperature. An analogy with three-body recombination of electrons with ions is drawn.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
