    Prompt and Delayed High-Energy Emission from Cosmological Gamma-Ray Bursts

    In the cosmological blast-wave model for gamma ray bursts (GRBs), high energy (> 10 GeV) gamma-rays are produced either through Compton scattering of soft photons by ultrarelativistic electrons, or as a consequence of the acceleration of protons to ultrahigh energies. We describe the spectral and temporal characteristics of high energy gamma-rays produced by both mechanisms, and discuss how these processes can be distinguished through observations with low-threshold Cherenkov telescopes or GLAST.     Photon acceleration in variable ultra-relativistic outflows and high-energy spectra of Gamma-Ray Bursts

    MeV seed photons produced in shocks in a variable ultra-relativistic outflow gain energy by the Fermi mechanism, because the photons Compton scatter off relativistically colliding shells. The Fermi-modified high-energy photon spectrum has a non-universal slope and a universal cutoff. A significant increase in the total radiative efficiency is possible. In some gamma ray bursts, most of the power might be emitted at the high-energy cutoff for this mechanism, which would be close to 100 MeV for outflows with a mean bulk Lorentz factor of 100.Comment: 8 pages, submitted to ApJ

    Beremendia fi ssidens and B. minor remains of the late Early Pleistocene vertebrate fauna of the Somssich Hill 2 locality are described. B. minor is reported here as a new element in the site. This record emended the stratigraphic range of this species to the Early Biharian Stage, Nagyharsányhegy Phase (ca. 900 ka). The detailed morphological and morphometrical studies gave a chance to make a new diff erential diagnosis between the two forms. Both of them might have been characterized by special nutrition strategy (poisoning snails and other small animals by their grooved lower incisor and storing them in their pits) and they could have lived in forest- and bushcovered lake-, or riversides. The European stratigraphical and palaeobiogeographical occurrences of the genus are summarized on the basis of published literature

    Prompt emission spectra from the photosphere of a GRB

    I explore the observational appearance of the photosphere of an ultrarelativistic flow with internal dissipation of energy (``dissipative'' GRB models). As a case study, I use the magnetic reconnection model (AC model) that makes robust predictions on the energy dissipation rates at different radii in the flow. With analytical and numerical tools for the radiative transfer problem, I show that the flow develops a hot photosphere where inverse Compton scattering leads to highly non-thermal spectra. For a wide range of luminosities and baryon loadings of the flow, this spectrum is very close to the observed prompt GRB emission.     Dependence of the optical brightness on the gamma and X-ray properties of GRBs

    The Swift satellite made a real break through with measuring simultaneously the gamma X-ray and optical data of GRBs, effectively. Although, the satellite measures the gamma, X-ray and optical properties almost in the same time a significant fractions of GRBs remain undetected in the optical domain. In a large number of cases only an upper bound is obtained. Survival analysis is a tool for studying samples where a part of the cases has only an upper (lower) limit. The obtained survival function may depend on some other variables. The Cox regression is a way to study these dependencies. We studied the dependence of the optical brightness (obtained by the UVOT) on the gamma and X-ray properties, measured by the BAT and XRT on board of the Swift satellite. We showed that the gamma peak flux has the greatest impact on the afterglow's optical brightness while the gamma photon index and the X-ray flux do not. This effect probably originates in the energetics of the jet launched from the central engine of the GRB which triggers the afterglow.Comment: 2012 Fermi Symposium proceedings - eConf C12102

    Using Eco-schemes in the new CAP: a guide for managing authorities

    This guide has been developed primarily for policy makers and Member State officials involved in the national and regional programming processes of the CAP Strategic Plans (CSPs). This process might involve different administrative levels (national, regional, local), different political fields (agriculture, environmental, food and health ministries), different public bodies (paying agencies, environmental agencies, rural development offices) depending on the administrative setting of each MS. In addition, the guide provides support to other stakeholders and practitioners from the public and private sectors and civil society (including agricultural, environmental, food, health and consumer NGOs), with a direct or indirect involvement in the programming and evaluation process of the CSPs. Since these new plans will have a strong impact on MS environments, agricultural sectors, rural areas, etc., the engagement of all stakeholders will be an important asset for supporting an effective implementation of the CSP objectives. There are many others with potential interests in the contents of this guide. EU citizens have demonstrated their increasing interest in the contents of the CAP objectives and policy framework, as demonstrated both by civil society initiatives and consumption decisions. The contents of this guide may therefore also be of interest to other societal actors with interests in agricultural and environmental policies, such as researchers, journalists, trade unions, and civil society organizations. However, the guide is intentionally more focused on the technical needs of those involved in CSP development and implementation

    On the detectability of gravitational waves background produced by gamma ray bursts

    In this paper we discuss a new strategy for the detection of gravitational radiation likely emitted by cosmological gamma ray burst. Robust and conservative estimates lead to the conclusion that the uncorrelated superimposition of bursts of gravitational waves can be detected by interferometric detectors like VIRGO or LIGO. The expected signal is predicted to carry two very distinctive signatures: the cosmological dipole anisotropy and a characteristic time scale in the auto correlation spectrum, which might be exploited, perhaps with ad hoc modifications and/or upgrading of the planned experiments, to confirm the non-instrumental origin of the signal.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, LATEX2e, Accepted for pubblications as a Letter to the Editor in Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physic
