This article summarizes the perspective we favor for the analysis of the relationships between communication, culture and subjectivity. In all three domains, it is about avoiding what we call the epochalist paradigm, in favor of localized approaches attentive to differences. Our perspective involves, first of all, avoiding a classificatory view of subjectivities. In addition, reduction of cultural history to a linear succession of epochs is avoided. Finally, both technological determinism and the idea of an omnipotent user are avoided as well, which implies considering both technology agencies and user actions, on an individual or collective basis

Glaciogenic dust has a strong relationship with global climate and ocean biogeochemical processes especially during glacial periods, being a major source of nutrients, mainly iron, that increase marine productivity. Different studies have attributed higher marine paleoproductivity along the southwestern Atlantic during the last glacial period to fluvial inputs and upwelling, but the possible influence of continental dust on that process is still unknown. This paper presents evidence suggesting that eolian-sourced glaciogenic dust favored higher ocean productivity during the last glacial, recorded in three sediment cores obtained on the lower continental slope off southern Brazil (~29°-30°S, ~47°W) at water depths between 1,514 and 2,091 m. The sampled sediments are silt-dominated terrigenous siliciclastics, but higher proportions of sand-sized biogenic carbonate (mostly foraminifer tests) at intervals corresponding to the stadials MIS 4 and 2 and parts of the interstadial MIS 3 point to intervals of increased productivity, correlated with pulses of higher deflation of dust from southern South America as recorded in the EPICA Dome C ice core in Antarctica. It is proposed that glacial climate-driven increased eolian processes transported iron-bearing dust produced by the expanded Patagonian ice sheet up to the southwestern Atlantic, fueling higher phytoplankton productivity and thus favoring the proliferation of planktonic and benthic foraminifera recorded in the cores. Eventual anthropogenically-driven reduction of tropical-sourced summer rainfall reaching southern South America, driven by equatorial ocean warming and deforestation in the Amazon region, may increase dust deflation and thus affect ocean productivity along the southwestern Atlantic in the future.

An efficient model of education is always closely related to a vision of society. The conception of network society places as a priority a network education model. The general objective of this article is to establish the foundations of network education and its relationship with the knowledge media. The methodology used in this research will be qualitative, descriptive with theoretical approach. The first section will establish the foundations of network education, based on the vision of network society, and its difference from distance education models based on the use of information and communication technologies. In the second section the concepts of “knowledge media” will be analysed and discussed. The third section will address the relationship between network education and the knowledge media. The fourth section will establish the possibilities and limits of network education within the scope of knowledge communication. The result of the theoretical reflection points to a network education model in the digital age based on the network society, within the scope of knowledge communication, aiming to establish the knowledge dialogue through knowledge media

Purpose – This paper aims to evaluate the impact of Federal University of Bahia’s Business Administration graduate programs on graduates’ competency, career and income development. Design/methodology/approach – It is a descriptive study, for which a survey was applied and the data were analyzed using quantitative techniques (descriptive analysis, factorial analysis, t-test, Mann–Whitney test and regression analysis). Data collection was conducted through an electronic questionnaire sent to the graduates in the period between 1998 and 2012. Findings – The results show that in general, the research participants perceive competency, career and income development after the course. At the same time, a comparison between the graduates of academic and professional axes (courses) was carried out, and in general, there is a certain similarity between perceptions. Originality/value – This research contributes to the theoretical field on evaluation of graduates, both from a methodological point of view, because of conducted statistical analysis that is complementary to other methods used, and from a practical point of view, as it offers redesign and improvement elements to the program’s curricula and teaching-learning methodologies so that it can maximize competency development, career and income of graduates

Designing for the pandemic: individual and collective safety devices

The rapid spread of COVID-19 has generated a demand for health-related safety equipment. The development of these emergency products raises several questions, in particular the possible lack of concern for health, satisfaction, and safety of users in addition to the immediate safety against the COVID-19. Considering these issues, the objectives of this work are to categorize, identify trends, and propose strategic approaches to the development and alteration of individual and collective safety solutions for facing the pandemic. For that, we conducted a review and categorization of industrial design products developed during the pandemic using the database Behance. We found 171 developed products. Of these, we classified 99 as individual safety solutions, with the majority being masks and face shields, 59 as being collective safety solutions like disinfection booths, physical transparent separators, and sanitary dispensers. And 13 were solutions geared to hospital use such as hospital furniture, testing solutions, and medical safety procedures. From the analysis of these products, we noted four major themes: protection from the infection, isolation, and physical barriers for enabling safe interaction, disinfection, and testing that can be used as a strategic guideline for the development of new solutions for this context

The issue of meaning production in written communication is discussed through the analysis of three different material presentations of the Gospels: a handwritten codex, a printed book and a tablet. Starting with a distinction between “text" and "book", the paper states that material supports are important in the construction of meaning without, however, relegating to the background, as unimportant, questions of uses, appropriations by readers and, of course, the text. A minimal cartography designed to map the production of meaning in reading is proposed, involving the text, the material aspects of its presentation, the individual and social dimension of the readers.
