The prediction and measurement of sound radiated by structures
Theories regarding the radiation of sound are reviewed and the implementation in strategies for explaining or measuring the sound produced by practical strucutres are discussed. Particular attention is given to those aspects that relate to the determination of the relative amounts of sound generated by various parts of a machine or structure, which can be very useful information for noise reduction efforts
Hellinger Distance Trees for Imbalanced Streams
Classifiers trained on data sets possessing an imbalanced class distribution
are known to exhibit poor generalisation performance. This is known as the
imbalanced learning problem. The problem becomes particularly acute when we
consider incremental classifiers operating on imbalanced data streams,
especially when the learning objective is rare class identification. As
accuracy may provide a misleading impression of performance on imbalanced data,
existing stream classifiers based on accuracy can suffer poor minority class
performance on imbalanced streams, with the result being low minority class
recall rates. In this paper we address this deficiency by proposing the use of
the Hellinger distance measure, as a very fast decision tree split criterion.
We demonstrate that by using Hellinger a statistically significant improvement
in recall rates on imbalanced data streams can be achieved, with an acceptable
increase in the false positive rate.Comment: 6 Pages, 2 figures, to be published in Proceedings 22nd International

Oxygen isotopes implanted in the LDEF spacecraft
Secondary ion mass spectrometry was used to study oxygen implanted in the surface of copper from the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF). Oxidation that occurred in orbit shows a characteristic oxygen isotope composition, depleted in O-18. The measured depletion is comparable to the predicted depletion (45 percent) based on a model of the gravitational separation of the oxygen isotopes. The anomalous oxygen was contained within 10nm of the surface. Tray E10 was calculated to have received 5.14 x 10(exp 21) atoms of oxygen cm(sup -2) during the LDEF mission and so there is sufficient anomalous implanted oxygen present in the surface to obtain a reliable isotopic profile
Proposal for manipulating and detecting spin and orbital states of trapped electrons on helium using cavity quantum electrodynamics
We propose to couple an on-chip high finesse superconducting cavity to the
lateral-motion and spin state of a single electron trapped on the surface of
superfluid helium. We estimate the motional coherence times to exceed 15
microseconds, while energy will be coherently exchanged with the cavity photons
in less than 10 nanoseconds for charge states and faster than 1 microsecond for
spin states, making the system attractive for quantum information processing
and cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments. Strong interaction with cavity
photons will provide the means for both nondestructive readout and coupling of
distant electrons.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, supplemental material
Stark shift and field ionization of arsenic donors in Si-SOI structures
We develop an efficient back gate for silicon-on-insulator (SOI) devices
operating at cryogenic temperatures, and measure the quadratic hyperfine Stark
shift parameter of arsenic donors in isotopically purified Si-SOI layers
using such structures. The back gate is implemented using MeV ion implantation
through the SOI layer forming a metallic electrode in the handle wafer,
enabling large and uniform electric fields up to 2 V/m to be
applied across the SOI layer. Utilizing this structure we measure the Stark
shift parameters of arsenic donors embedded in the Si SOI layer and find
a contact hyperfine Stark parameter of m/V. We also demonstrate electric-field driven dopant ionization in
the SOI device layer, measured by electron spin resonance.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Coherence of Spin Qubits in Silicon
Given the effectiveness of semiconductor devices for classical computation
one is naturally led to consider semiconductor systems for solid state quantum
information processing. Semiconductors are particularly suitable where local
control of electric fields and charge transport are required. Conventional
semiconductor electronics is built upon these capabilities and has demonstrated
scaling to large complicated arrays of interconnected devices. However, the
requirements for a quantum computer are very different from those for classical
computation, and it is not immediately obvious how best to build one in a
semiconductor. One possible approach is to use spins as qubits: of nuclei, of
electrons, or both in combination. Long qubit coherence times are a
prerequisite for quantum computing, and in this paper we will discuss
measurements of spin coherence in silicon. The results are encouraging - both
electrons bound to donors and the donor nuclei exhibit low decoherence under
the right circumstances. Doped silicon thus appears to pass the first test on
the road to a quantum computer.Comment: Submitted to J Cond Matter on Nov 15th, 200
Electron spin relaxation of N@C60 in CS2
We examine the temperature dependence of the relaxation times of the
molecules N@C60 and N@C70 (which comprise atomic nitrogen trapped within a
carbon cage) in liquid CS2 solution. The results are inconsistent with the
fluctuating zero field splitting (ZFS) mechanism, which is commonly invoked to
explain electron spin relaxation for S > 1/2 spins in liquid solution, and is
the mechanism postulated in the literature for these systems. Instead, we find
a clear Arrhenius temperature dependence for N@C60, indicating the spin
relaxation is driven primarily by an Orbach process. For the asymmetric N@C70
molecule, which has a permanent non-zero ZFS, we resolve an additional
relaxation mechanism caused by the rapid reorientation of its ZFS. We also
report the longest coherence time (T2) ever observed for a molecular electron
spin, being 0.25 ms at 170K.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures V2: Updated to published versio
