Key to the terrestrial slugs (Gastropoda) of Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada

    Get PDF
Three species of terrestrial slugs (Gastropoda) are native to Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada. At least twelve additional species have been accidentally introduced from Europe. Many of the introduced species are now widespread throughout the region; some are commonly found in natural forested habitats. Because of the complexity of the systematics of some of the introduced species, dissection of internal anatomical structures and DNA and other biochemical analyses may be required to distinguish cryptic species. Although this key to the terrestrial slugs of the Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada was developed in 1973, it remains the best tool in identifying the terrestrial slug species of the region. Because it was published in a relatively obscure journal that is not readily available, we are placing it on this web site where it can be readily accessed.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe

    Advances in atomic oxygen simulation

Atomic oxygen (AO) present in the atmosphere at orbital altitudes of 200 to 700 km has been shown to degrade various exposed materials on Shuttle flights. The relative velocity of the AO with the spacecraft, together with the AO density, combine to yield an environment consisting of a 5 eV beam energy with a flux of 10(exp 14) to 10(exp 15) oxygen atoms/sq cm/s. An AO ion beam apparatus that produces flux levels and energy similar to that encountered by spacecraft in low Earth orbit (LEO) has been in existence since 1987. Test data was obtained from the interaction of the AO ion beam with materials used in space applications (carbon, silver, kapton) and with several special coatings of interest deposited on various surfaces. The ultimate design goal of the AO beam simulation device is to produce neutral AO at sufficient flux levels to replicate on-orbit conditions. A newly acquired mass spectrometer with energy discrimination has allowed 5 eV neutral oxygen atoms to be separated and detected from the background of thermal oxygen atoms of approx 0.2 eV. Neutralization of the AO ion beam at 5 eV was shown at the Martin Marietta AO facility

Yearly Maximum Mean, Minimum Mean, and Yearly Mean Temperatures for 58 South Dakota Weather Stations Together with Daily Frequencies for Each Year. Maximum Temperatures of 90 Degrees or Higher and 32 Degrees or Lower. Also Daily Frequencies of Minimum Temperatures of 32 Degrees or Lower and 0 Degrees or Lower

Annual temperature data for 58 South Dakota weather stations are presented. Station tables are arranged in alphabetical order. Maximum and minimum means are not figured when less than 335 observations for any year were reported at a station. Frequencies during the year of maximum temperatures of 90 degrees F or higher as well as maximum temperatures of 32 degrees or lower are listed. For minimum temperatures, yearly frequencies of 32 degrees F or lower and minimum temperatures of 0 degrees F or lower are presented followed by the yearly mean for all years for each station during which there were 335 or more observations for both maximum and minimum temperatures reported

Predicted and measured strain responses of isotropic panels to base excitation

The accuracy of classical linear theory for predicting acceleration and strain for cantilevered and Clamped-Free-Clamped-Free (C-F-C-F) panels excited through the base is studied. Aluminum, steel and titanium plates of various dimensions and thicknessess were vibration tested, using a broadband random signal applied through a shaker mounting fixture. The strains were measured at 9 locations on the cantilevered panels and at 5 locations on the C-F-C-F panels. Predictions were based on the Ritz method. The measured accelerations of the base were input to the analysis for the forcing function. Comparisons between predicted and measured strain acceleration spectra were within an average error of 20 percent for both the cantilevered and C-F-C-F panels

The invention features isolated cytochrome P450 polypeptides and nucleic acid molecules, as well as expression vectors and transgenic plants containing these molecules. In addition, the invention features uses of such molecules in methods of increasing the level of resistance against a disease caused by a plant pathogen in a transgenic plant, in methods for producing altered compounds, for example, hydroxylated compounds, and in methods of producing isoprenoid compounds
