    Certain physical properties of cobalt and nickel borides

    The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, the thermal conductivity, and the thermal emf of cobalt and nickel borides were studied. In the case of the nickel borides the magnetic susceptibility and the Hall coefficient were determined at room temperature. The results are discussed with allowance for the current carrier concentration, the effect of various mechanisms of current-carrier scattering and the location of the Fermi level in relation to the 3d band

    Magnetic coiffure: Engineering of human hair surfaces with polyelectrolyte-stabilised magnetite nanoparticles

    Here we report a spontaneous electrostatic coating of human hair with aqueous Fe3O4 colloids capable to tailor magnetic properties to hair, orienting and even moving them under the influence of the external magnetic field. Magnetite particles were modified by cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes and then successfully deposited in dense arrays, starting from cuticle gaps and spreading further over a major hair surface. These biocompatible and biodegradable magnetic nanoparticles may serve as carriers for drug loading and delivery for topical pharmaceutical treatments. The deposition process was imaged in real-time using dark-field microscopy. The hair specimens were further studied using a number of characterisation techniques. Under application of an external magnetic field, the nanoparticle magnetic ordering was obtained resulting in the hair alignment and attraction along the field applied. We believe the technology reported here will find a range of applications in topical drug delivery and hair care

    Kolmogorov turbulence, Anderson localization and KAM integrability

    The conditions for emergence of Kolmogorov turbulence, and related weak wave turbulence, in finite size systems are analyzed by analytical methods and numerical simulations of simple models. The analogy between Kolmogorov energy flow from large to small spacial scales and conductivity in disordered solid state systems is proposed. It is argued that the Anderson localization can stop such an energy flow. The effects of nonlinear wave interactions on such a localization are analyzed. The results obtained for finite size system models show the existence of an effective chaos border between the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) integrability at weak nonlinearity, when energy does not flow to small scales, and developed chaos regime emerging above this border with the Kolmogorov turbulent energy flow from large to small scales.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figs, EPJB style

    Pion and Sigma Polarizabilities and Radiative Transitions

    Fermilab E781 plans measurements of gamma-Sigma and γ\gamma-pion interactions using a 600 GeV beam of Sigmas and pions, and a virtual photon target. Pion polarizabilities and radiative transitions will be measured in this experiment. The former can test a precise prediction of chiral symmetry; the latter for a_1(1260) ----> pi + gamma is important for understanding the polarizability. The experiment also measures polarizabilities and radiative transitions for Sigma hyperons. The polarizabilities can test predictions of baryon chiral perturbation theory. The radiative transitions to the Sigma*(1385) provide a measure of the magnetic moment of the s-quark.     Creating Nanoscale luminescence Centres in Silver Halides Suitable for Infrared Application

    This study shows the possibility of creating luminescence centres in silver halide media using substances based on rare-earth elements such as neodymium, ytterbium and dysprosium. These luminescent substances in the form of fine particles of both nanoscale and microscale dimensions can be introduced into the AgCl0.25Br0.75 ceramic matrix highly transparent in the spectral range of 0.5–35 μm. Our theoretical and experimental studies showed that the introduction of luminescent nanoparticles or microparticles at the amount of 0.5 wt.% into AgCl0.25Br0.75 ceramics neither reduces the level of its transmission in the MIR region nor shortens the range of transmission. What is more, we proved that the luminescent properties of nanoparticles remain well preserved after doping silver halide ceramic media with them. Therefore, silver halides doped with rare-earth elements in question can be used for developing the sources of coherent middle infrared radiation, with appropriate energy levels being excited by optical radiation or pulsed electric field. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing.     Chronic nodular prurigo : clinical profile and burden. A European cross-sectional study

    Chronic nodular prurigo (CNPG) is a condition characterized by chronic itch, a prolonged scratching behaviour and the presence of pruriginous nodules. A comprehensive understanding of this condition, especially regarding its clinical characteristics and impact on quality of life is still lacking. Aim of this pan-European multicentre cross-sectional study was to establish the clinical profile of CNPG, including its associated burden. Fifteen centres from 12 European countries recruited CNPG patients presenting at the centre or using the centres' own databases. Patients were asked to complete a questionnaire in paper or electronic format. Demography, current co-morbidities, underlying disease, itch intensity, additional sensory symptoms, quality of life, highest burden and emotional experience of itch were assessed. A total of 509 patients (210 male, median age: 64 years [52; 72]) were enrolled. Of these, 406 reported itch and CNPG lesions in the previous 7 days and qualified to complete the whole questionnaire. We recorded moderate to severe worst itch intensity scores in the previous 24 h. Scores were higher in patients with lower educational levels and those coming from Eastern or Southern Europe. Most patients experience itch often or always (71%) and report that their everyday life is negatively affected (53%). Itch intensity was considered to be the most burdensome aspect of the disease by 49% of the patients, followed by the visibility of skin lesions (21%) and bleeding of lesions (21%). The majority of patients was unaware of an underlying condition contributing to CNPG (64%), while psychiatric diseases were the conditions most often mentioned in association with CNPG (19%). This multicentre cross-sectional study shows that itch is the dominant symptom in CNPG and reveals that the profile of the disease is similar throughout Europe
