TARGET: Federated Class-Continual Learning via Exemplar-Free Distillation
This paper focuses on an under-explored yet important problem: Federated
Class-Continual Learning (FCCL), where new classes are dynamically added in
federated learning. Existing FCCL works suffer from various limitations, such
as requiring additional datasets or storing the private data from previous
tasks. In response, we first demonstrate that non-IID data exacerbates
catastrophic forgetting issue in FL. Then we propose a novel method called
TARGET (federat\textbf{T}ed cl\textbf{A}ss-continual lea\textbf{R}nin\textbf{G}
via \textbf{E}xemplar-free dis\textbf{T}illation), which alleviates
catastrophic forgetting in FCCL while preserving client data privacy. Our
proposed method leverages the previously trained global model to transfer
knowledge of old tasks to the current task at the model level. Moreover, a
generator is trained to produce synthetic data to simulate the global
distribution of data on each client at the data level. Compared to previous
FCCL methods, TARGET does not require any additional datasets or storing real
data from previous tasks, which makes it ideal for data-sensitive scenarios.Comment: ICCV 202
MBTFNet: Multi-Band Temporal-Frequency Neural Network For Singing Voice Enhancement
A typical neural speech enhancement (SE) approach mainly handles speech and
noise mixtures, which is not optimal for singing voice enhancement scenarios.
Music source separation (MSS) models treat vocals and various accompaniment
components equally, which may reduce performance compared to the model that
only considers vocal enhancement. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-band
temporal-frequency neural network (MBTFNet) for singing voice enhancement,
which particularly removes background music, noise and even backing vocals from
singing recordings. MBTFNet combines inter and intra-band modeling for better
processing of full-band signals. Dual-path modeling are introduced to expand
the receptive field of the model. We propose an implicit personalized
enhancement (IPE) stage based on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation, which
further improves the performance of MBTFNet. Experiments show that our proposed
model significantly outperforms several state-of-the-art SE and MSS models
Screening and the epidemic of thyroid cancer in China:an analysis of national representative inpatient and commercial insurance databases
Association between ambient air pollution and hospital admissions, length of hospital stay and hospital cost for patients with cardiovascular diseases and comorbid diabetes mellitus: Base on 1,969,755 cases in Beijing, China, 2014–2019
Background: Evidence on the effects of the air pollutants on the hospital admissions, hospital cost and length of stay (LOS) among patients with comorbidities remains limited in China, particularly for patients with cardiovascular diseases and comorbid diabetes mellitus (CVD-DM). Methods: We collected daily data on CVD-DM patients from 242 hospitals in Beijing between 2014 and 2019. Generalized additive model was employed to quantify the associations between admissions, LOS, and hospital cost for CVD-DM patients and air pollutants. We further evaluated the attributable risk posed by air pollutants to CVD-DM patients, using both Chinese and WHO air quality guidelines as reference. Results: Per 10 ug/m3 increase of particles with an aerodynamic diameter \u3c 2.5 μm (PM2.5), particles with an aerodynamic diameter \u3c 10 μm (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbonic oxide (CO) and ozone (O3) corresponded to a 0.64% (95% CI: 0.57 to 0.71), 0.52% (95% CI: 0.46 to 0.57), 0.93% (95% CI: 0.67 to 1.20), 0.98% (95% CI: 0.81 to 1.16), 1.66% (95% CI: 1.18 to 2.14) and 0.53% (95% CI: 0.45 to 0.61) increment for CVD-DM patients’ admissions. Among the six pollutants, particulate pollutants (PM2.5 and PM10) in most lag days exhibited adverse effects on LOS and hospital cost. For every 10 ug/m3 increase in PM2.5 and PM10, the absolute increase with LOS will increase 62.08 days (95% CI: 28.93 to 95.23) and 51.77 days (95% CI:22.88 to 80.66), respectively. The absolute increase with hospital cost will increase 105.04 Chinese Yuan (CNY) (95% CI: 49.27 to 160.81) and 81.76 CNY (95% CI: 42.01 to 121.51) in PM2.5 and PM10, respectively. Given WHO 2021 air quality guideline as the reference, PM2.5 had the maximum attributable fraction of 3.34% (95% CI: 2.94% to 3.75%), corresponding to an avoidable of 65,845 (95% CI: 57,953 to 73,812) patients with CVD-DM. Conclusion: PM2.5 and PM10 are positively associated with hospital admissions, hospital cost and LOS for patients with CVD-DM. Policy changes to reduce air pollutants exposure may reduce CVD-DM admissions and substantial savings in health care spending and LOS

Mechanical-force-induced non-local collective ferroelastic switching in epitaxial lead-titanate thin films.
Ferroelastic switching in ferroelectric/multiferroic oxides plays a crucial role in determining their dielectric, piezoelectric, and magnetoelectric properties. In thin films of these materials, however, substrate clamping is generally thought to limit the electric-field- or mechanical-force-driven responses to the local scale. Here, we report mechanical-force-induced large-area, non-local, collective ferroelastic domain switching in PbTiO3 epitaxial thin films by tuning the misfit-strain to be near a phase boundary wherein c/a and a1/a2 nanodomains coexist. Phenomenological models suggest that the collective, c-a-c-a ferroelastic switching arises from the small potential barrier between the degenerate domain structures, and the large anisotropy of a and c domains, which collectively generates much larger response and large-area domain propagation. Large-area, non-local response under small stimuli, unlike traditional local response to external field, provides an opportunity of unique response to local stimuli, which has potential for use in high-sensitivity pressure sensors and switches
Genome-Wide Histone H3K27 Acetylation Profiling Identified Genes Correlated With Prognosis in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma
Thyroid carcinoma (TC) is the most common endocrine malignancy, and papillary TC (PTC) is the most frequent subtype of TC, accounting for 85–90% of all the cases. Aberrant histone acetylation contributes to carcinogenesis by inducing the dysregulation of certain cancer-related genes. However, the histone acetylation landscape in PTC remains elusive. Here, we interrogated the epigenomes of PTC and benign thyroid nodule (BTN) tissues by applying H3K27ac chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by deep sequencing (ChIP-seq) along with RNA-sequencing. By comparing the epigenomic features between PTC and BTN, we detected changes in H3K27ac levels at active regulatory regions, identified PTC-specific super-enhancer-associated genes involving immune-response and cancer-related pathways, and uncovered several genes that associated with disease-free survival of PTC. In summary, our data provided a genome-wide landscape of histone modification in PTC and demonstrated the role of enhancers in transcriptional regulations associated with prognosis of PTC
Definitive Simultaneous Integrated Boost Versus Conventional-Fractionated Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy for Patients With Advanced Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis
BackgroundThe aim of this study was to compare the effects of simultaneous integrated boost–intensity modulated radiotherapy (SIB-IMRT) and conventional fractionated-IMRT (CF-IMRT) for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).MethodsThe data of 1173 patients treated with either CF-IMRT or SIB-IMRT for a curative intent from 2005 to 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to create a well-balanced cohort of 687 patients at 1:2 ratio (237 patients in SIB-IMRT group and 450 patients in CF-IMRT group). Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), recurrence pattern, and toxicity profiles were evaluated and compared between the two groups after PSM.ResultsAfter a median follow-up time of 42.3 months (range, 3.0-153.2 months) for surviving patients, survival results were comparable in the two groups. After PSM, the 1-year, 2-year and 4-year OS rates in the SIB-IMRT and CF-IMRT groups were 70.0% vs. 66.4%, 41.9% vs. 41.7% and 30.2% vs. 27.6%, respectively (p = 0.87). The 1-year, 2-year and 4-year PFS rates were 48.4% vs. 49.1%, 31.2% vs. 29.4%, and 26.1% vs. 17.9%, respectively (p = 0.64). Locoregional recurrence (p = 0.32) and distant metastasis (p = 0.54) rates were also comparable between two groups. The toxicity profile was similar in the two groups. Multivariate analyses in the matched samples showed that female, concurrent chemotherapy and earlier clinical stage were independently associated with longer OS and PFS.ConclusionsSIB-IMRT appears to be equivalent to CF-IMRT in treatment efficacy and safety, and could become an alternative option for definitive radiotherapy of ESCC
Predicting Progression of IgA Nephropathy: New Clinical Progression Risk Score
IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is a common cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in Asia. In this study, based on a large cohort of Chinese patients with IgAN, we aim to identify independent predictive factors associated with disease progression to ESRD. We collected retrospective clinical data and renal outcomes on 619 biopsy-diagnosed IgAN patients with a mean follow-up time of 41.3 months. In total, 67 individuals reached the study endpoint defined by occurrence of ESRD necessitating renal replacement therapy. In the fully adjusted Cox proportional hazards model, there were four baseline variables with a significant independent effect on the risk of ESRD. These included: eGFR [HR = 0.96(0.95–0.97)], serum albumin [HR = 0.47(0.32–0.68)], hemoglobin [HR = 0.79(0.72–0.88)], and SBP [HR = 1.02(1.00–1.03)]. Based on these observations, we developed a 4-variable equation of a clinical risk score for disease progression. Our risk score explained nearly 22% of the total variance in the primary outcome. Survival ROC curves revealed that the risk score provided improved prediction of ESRD at 24th, 60th and 120th month of follow-up compared to the three previously proposed risk scores. In summary, our data indicate that IgAN patients with higher systolic blood pressure, lower eGFR, hemoglobin, and albumin levels at baseline are at a greatest risk of progression to ESRD. The new progression risk score calculated based on these four baseline variables offers a simple clinical tool for risk stratification
