A nonlinear drift which leads to -generalized distributions
We consider a system described by a Fokker-Planck equation with a new type of
momentum-dependent drift coefficient which asymptotically decreases as
for a large momentum . It is shown that the steady-state of this system is a
-generalized Gaussian distribution, which is a non-Gaussian
distribution with a power-law tail.Comment: Submitted to EPJB. 8 pages, 2 figures, dedicated to the proceedings

Stochastic pump of interacting particles
We consider the overdamped motion of Brownian particles, interacting via
particle exclusion, in an external potential that varies with time and space.
We show that periodic potentials that maintain specific position-dependent
phase relations generate time-averaged directed current of particles. We obtain
analytic results for a lattice version of the model using a recently developed
perturbative approach. Many interesting features like particle-hole symmetry,
current reversal with changing density, and system-size dependence of current
are obtained. We propose possible experiments to test our predictions.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Anomalous spatial diffusion and multifractality in optical lattices
Transport of cold atoms in shallow optical lattices is characterized by slow,
nonstationary momentum relaxation. We here develop a projector operator method
able to derive in this case a generalized Smoluchowski equation for the
position variable. We show that this explicitly non-Markovian equation can be
written as a systematic expansion involving higher-order derivatives. We use
the latter to compute arbitrary moments of the spatial distribution and analyze
their multifractal properties.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Electromagnetic transitions in an effective chiral Lagrangian with the eta-prime and light vector mesons
We consider the chiral Lagrangian with a nonet of Goldstone bosons and a
nonet of light vector mesons. The mixing between the pseudoscalar mesons eta
and eta-prime is taken into account. A novel counting scheme is suggested that
is based on hadrogenesis, which conjectures a mass gap in the meson spectrum of
QCD in the limit of a large number of colors. Such a mass gap would justify to
consider the vector mesons and the eta-prime meson as light degrees of freedom.
The complete leading order Lagrangian is constructed and discussed. As a first
application it is tested against electromagnetic transitions of light vector
mesons to pseudoscalar mesons. Our parameters are determined by the
experimental data on photon decays of the omega, phi and eta-prime meson. In
terms of such parameters we predict the corresponding decays into virtual
photons with either dielectrons or dimuons in the final state.Comment: 17 pages, extended discussion on mixin
CFD code comparison for 2D airfoil flows
The current paper presents the effort, in the EU AVATAR project, to establish the necessary requirements to obtain consistent lift over drag ratios among seven CFD codes. The flow around a 2D airfoil case is studied, for both transitional and fully turbulent conditions at Reynolds numbers of 3 × 106 and 15 × 106. The necessary grid resolution, domain size, and iterative convergence criteria to have consistent results are discussed, and suggestions are given for best practice. For the fully turbulent results four out of seven codes provide consistent results. For the laminar-turbulent transitional results only three out of seven provided results, and the agreement is generally lower than for the fully turbulent case
Computing FO-Rewritings in EL in Practice: from Atomic to Conjunctive Queries
A prominent approach to implementing ontology-mediated queries (OMQs) is to
rewrite into a first-order query, which is then executed using a conventional
SQL database system. We consider the case where the ontology is formulated in
the description logic EL and the actual query is a conjunctive query and show
that rewritings of such OMQs can be efficiently computed in practice, in a
sound and complete way. Our approach combines a reduction with a decomposed
backwards chaining algorithm for OMQs that are based on the simpler atomic
queries, also illuminating the relationship between first-order rewritings of
OMQs based on conjunctive and on atomic queries. Experiments with real-world
ontologies show promising results
High-ionization mid-infrared lines as black hole mass and bolometric luminosity indicators in active galactic nuclei
We present relations of the black hole mass and the optical luminosity with
the velocity dispersion and the luminosity of the [Ne V] and the [O IV]
high-ionization lines in the mid-infrared (MIR) for 28 reverberation-mapped
active galactic nuclei. We used high-resolution Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph
and Infrared Space Observatory Short Wavelength Spectrometer data to fit the
profiles of these MIR emission lines that originate from the narrow-line region
of the nucleus. We find that the lines are often resolved and that the velocity
dispersion of [Ne V] and [O IV] follows a relation similar to that between the
black hole mass and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion found for local
galaxies. The luminosity of the [Ne V] and the [O IV] lines in these sources is
correlated with that of the optical 5100A continuum and with the black hole
mass. Our results provide a means to derive black hole properties in various
types of active galactic nuclei, including highly obscured systems.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ
On the succinctness of query rewriting over shallow ontologies
We investigate the succinctness problem for conjunctive query rewritings over OWL2QL ontologies of depth 1 and 2 by means of hypergraph programs computing Boolean functions. Both positive and negative results are obtained. We show that, over ontologies of depth 1, conjunctive queries have polynomial-size nonrecursive datalog rewritings; tree-shaped queries have polynomial positive existential rewritings; however, in the worst case, positive existential rewritings can be superpolynomial. Over ontologies of depth 2, positive existential and nonrecursive datalog rewritings of conjunctive queries can suffer an exponential blowup, while first-order rewritings can be superpolynomial unless NP is included in P/poly. We also analyse rewritings of tree-shaped queries over arbitrary ontologies and note that query entailment for such queries is fixed-parameter tractable
