    Occurrence and Gas-Particle Partitioning of Organic UV Filters in Urban Air

    A retrospective analysis of a comprehensive series of high-volume air samples (n = 70) collected during 2010-2011 in Toronto (Canada) was performed. Seven UV compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) with sum of concentrations (gas + particle phase) ranging from 80 to 2030 pg/m3. Homosalate (HMS) was the most prevalent organic UV-filter in air (47% of the total concentration), followed by 2-ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS, ∼29%), E- and Z-2-ethylhexyl 4-methoxycinnamate (EHMC, ∼17%). Ambient air (gas + particle phase) concentrations of organic UV-filters showed a strong seasonality, with peak levels during the summer. An analysis of Clausius-Clapeyron slopes indicated that much of the ambient burden of organic UV-filters are explained by volatilization from terrestrial and aquatic surfaces and supplemented with human activities and use of lotions and sunscreens, containing organic UV-filters, in addition to its use in plastics, textiles, paints, and pesticides. The results showed that organic UV-filters exist mainly in the gas phase with some exceptions, for instance, octocrylene (OCR), which was associated with both gas and particle phases, and avobenzone (AVB), which was predominantly in the particle phase. Lastly, this study revealed the need for basic physical chemical property data for organic UV-filters, including information on transformation rates and products, for better evaluating their environmental fate and effects.Fil: Pegoraro, César Nicolás.     With this report, the space group of [()()2] is corrected ( : nalidixic acid mono-anion; : diaminocyclohexane) from its wrong description in the literature. In the correct, non-centrosymmetric space group 1 , the crystal structure is well ordered and the stereochemistry is correct. Crystallographic tools to recognize the correct symmetry are described. This work encourages experienced and inexperienced scientists to remain critical about the output of automatic, black-box crystallographic software

    Health economic evaluations of interventions to increase physical activity and decrease sedentary behavior at the workplace : a systematic review

    Objective The workplace is an ideal setting to implement public health strategies, but economic justification for such interventions is needed. Therefore, we performed a critical appraisal and synthesis of health economic evaluations (HEE) of workplace interventions aiming to increase physical activity (PA) and/or decrease sedentary behavior (SB). Methods A comprehensive search filter was developed using appropriate guidelines, such as the Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies (PRESS) checklist, and published search algorithms. Six databases and hand searches were used to identify eligible studies. Full HEE of workplace interventions targeting PA/SB were included. Methodological quality was assessed using the Consensus Health Economic Criteria (CHEC) list. Two researchers independently performed all procedures. Hedges' g was calculated to compare intervention effects. Outcomes from HEE were recalculated in 2017 euros and benefit-standardized. Results Eighteen HEE were identified that fulfilled on average 68% of the CHEC list criteria. Most studies showed improvements in PA/SB, but effects were small and thus, their relevance is questionable. Interventions were heterogeneous, no particular intervention type was found to be more effective. HEE were heterogeneous regarding methodological approaches and the selection of cost categories was inconsistent. Indirect costs were the main cost driver. In all studies, effects on costs were subject to substantial uncertainty. Conclusions Due to small effects and uncertain impact on costs, the economic evidence of worksite PA/SB-interventions remains unclear. Future studies are needed to determine effective strategies. The HEE of such interventions should be developed using guidelines and validated measures for productivity costs. Additionally, studies should model the long-term costs and effects because of the long pay-back time of PA/SB interventions

    Ultrasound-Assisted Preparation of Mo/ZSM-5 Zeolite Catalyst for Non-Oxidative Methane Dehydroaromatization

    The activity and selectivity of Mo/ZSM-5, benchmarking catalyst for the non-oxidative dehydroaromatization of methane, strongly depend on the cluster size, spatial distribution, and chemical environment of the Mo-based active sites. This study discloses the use of an ultrasound-assisted ion-exchange (US-IE) technique as an alternative Mo/ZSM-5 synthesis procedure in order to promote metal dispersion along the zeolite framework. For this purpose, a plate transducer (91.8 kHz) is employed to transmit the ultrasonic irradiation (US) into the ion-exchange reactor. The physico-chemical properties and catalytic activity of samples prepared under the said irradiation procedure and traditional impregnation (IWI) method are critically evaluated. Characterization results suggest that US neither affects the crystalline structure nor the particle size of the parent zeolite. However, US-IE promotes molybdenum species dispersion, avoids clustering at the external fresh zeolite surface and enhances molybdate species anchoring to the zeolite framework with respect to IWI. Despite the improved metal dispersion, the catalytic activity between catalysts synthesized by US-IE and IWI is comparable. This suggests that the sole initial dispersion enhancement does not suffice to boost the catalyst productivity and further actions such ZSM-5 support and catalyst pre-conditioning are required. Nevertheless, the successful implementation of US-IE and the resulting metal dispersion enhancement pave the way toward the application of this technique to the synthesis of other dispersed catalysts and materials of interest
