Geography and Enlightenment in the German states, c.1690 â c.1815
This thesis is concerned with the science of geography in the German states during the
âlongâ eighteenth century, c.1690 â c.1815. It speaks to recent scholarly debates in
historical geography, the history of science, book history, and Enlightenment studies.
The thesis investigates the forms taken by eighteenth-century German geography, its
meanings, and practices. This is of particular interest, since this topic is understudied.
The thesis is based upon an analysis of geographical print (books and periodicals) and
manuscript correspondence.
The thesis proposes that geographyâs definition was understood as âdescription
of the earthâ. The interpretative meaning of this definition, geographyâs purpose in print,
and its educational practice (content and methods) were, in contrast, debated. The thesis
suggests that geographical print â in the form of books and periodicals â served two
main purposes: progress in geography, guided by the aim of scientific âcompleteness,â
and progress of society, guided by the aim of human improvement.
In chapter 1, I outline the main topics and the structure of the thesis. Chapter 2
reviews the background of the thesis, and offers a partial historiographic and conceptual
overview of the relevant themes. In chapter 3, I show that the Holy Roman Empire was
characterised by fragmented political, religious, urban, and scholarly landscapes. The
German emphasis on âwritingâ geography âcompletelyâ was partly, I argue, a way to
transcend this fragmentation in an imagined âgeographical republic of lettersâ. The
emphasis on writing geography systematically was a way to justify the German wish for
greater scholarly recognition on part of their foreign âcolleaguesâ who more
opportunities to participate in geographical expeditions overseas and in colonial politics.
In chapter 4, I argue that the classification of geography and geographyâs relation to
other sciences were debated. In consequence, geographical practice and use â
geographyâs writing and teaching â affected its interpretative meaning. In chapter 5, I go
on and suggest that geography was a sedentary science aimed at improvement in
geography and of society. Geographical print production and its evolution reflect the
iii
urban and religious landscapes of the empire. Geographical print was produced across
the German states and, particularly, in the Protestant â middle and central German â
states. This leads in chapter 6 to an analysis of geographical education and the
suggestion that wide-spread conservatism in geographical instruction reflects the
education aim for social utility and personal âeudaimoniaâ, as well as and an adherence
to given social and political structures. In conclusion (chapter 7), the main findings of
this thesis shed light on the production and use of geography in the German states during
the âlongâ eighteenth century, and the history of geography more generally. In discussing
the relationship between Enlightenment thought and geography, the thesis extends our
knowledge on German intellectual history, and contributes to our understanding of the
geographies of Enlightenment geographical knowledge and practice
For 15 years a big central European hospital operator has been carrying out Development Assessment Center (DAC) within the scope of management development.
In summer 2009, 411 (out of originally 551) DAC-participants took part in an online-retest. Data of both measuring times were collected with the Inventar zur Persönlichkeitsdiagnostik in Situationen (IPS; Schaarschmidt & Fischer, in 1999). Analysis included 317 Participants with valid first and second measurement. Six occupational groups (Management, EDP, technicians, physician, Nursing, medical technician) were represented.
Socialisation theory, selection theory and gravitational theory in the context of positional choice, occupational choice and organisational choice compose the theoretical background.
Results support hypothesis of socialisation hypothesis rather than selection theory and gravitational theory. Differences appear in the self-assessment between occupational group members with and without patient's contact. On the basis of career courses (demotion, no positional change, promotion) becomes clear that positive personality development is enhanced by occupational demands. Nevertheless, this process of development doesnât proceed by an interindividually uniform course. Development of personality traits is differently affected by managerial responsibility. Organisational culture has no influence on personality development.
The inclusion of the professional background as well as individual peculiarities is suggested for executive development. Members of all hierarchy levels should be offered challenging occupational demands
Measuring 3D tree imbalance of plant models using graph-theoretical approaches
Imbalance in the 3D structure of plants can be an important indicator of
insufficient light or nutrient supply, as well as excessive wind, (formerly
present) physical barriers, neighbor or storm damage. It can also be a simple
means to detect certain illnesses, since some diseases like the apple
proliferation disease, an infection with the barley yellow dwarf virus or plant
canker can cause abnormal growth, like \enquote{witches' brooms} or burls,
resulting in a deviating 3D plant architecture. However, quantifying imbalance
of plant growth is not an easy task, and it requires a mathematically sound 3D
model of plants to which imbalance indices can be applied. Current models of
plants are often based on stacked cylinders or voxel matrices and do not allow
for measuring the degree of 3D imbalance in the branching structure of the
whole plant.
On the other hand, various imbalance indices are readily available for
so-called graph-theoretical trees and are frequently used in areas like
phylogenetics and computer science. While only some basic ideas of these
indices can be transferred to the 3D setting, graph-theoretical trees are a
logical foundation for 3D plant models that allow for elegant and natural
imbalance measures.
In this manuscript, our aim is thus threefold: We first present a new
graph-theoretical 3D model of plants and discuss desirable properties of
imbalance measures in the 3D setting. We then introduce and analyze eight
different 3D imbalance indices and their properties. Thirdly, we illustrate all
our findings using a data set of 63 bush beans. Moreover, we implemented all
our indices in the publicly available \textsf{R}-software package

(Autorenreferat
