This is the third study of lectin and mucilage detection in Labiatae nutlets from Colombia. It was carried out on 30 taxa; 15 of them belonging to 14 genera in which no previous studies have been carried out in this fi eld, the other 15 belonging to previously studied genera. A differential response was observed in the group of genera and species studied in terms of mucilage presence as well as lectin activity which consistently increased after extract treatment with Pectinex. Lectin activity was detected in 26 species, being important (more than 60% activity) in at least 75% of them. Genera such as Aegiphila, Agastache, Ballota, Mentha and Origanum, whilst not presenting mucilage, did present lectin activity, with high activity in most cases. This is the fi rst time that a lectin has been reported in these genera. Salvia (in all but Salvia sections studied) presented mucilage and important lectin activity.Peer reviewe

Heparan sulfate proteoglycans undergo differential expression alterations in left sided colorectal cancer, depending on their metastatic character

Abstract Background Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) are complex molecules which play a role in the invasion and growth and metastatic properties of cancerous cells. In this work we analyze changes in the patterns of expression of HSPGs in left sided colorectal cancer (LSCRC), both metastatic and non-metastatic, and the results are also compared with those previously obtained for right sided tumors (RSCRCs). Methods Eighteen LSCRCs were studied using qPCR to analyze the expression of both the proteoglycan core proteins and the enzymes involved in heparan sulfate chain biosynthesis. Certain HSPGs also carry chondroitin sulfate chains and so we also studied the genes involved in its biosynthesis. The expression of certain genes that showed significant expression differences were also analysed using immunohistochemical techniques. Results Changes in proteoglycan core proteins were dependent on their location, and the main differences between metastatic and non-metastatic tumors affected cell-surface glypicans, while other molecules were quite similar. Glypicans were also responsible for the main differences between RS- and LS- malignances. Regarding the biosynthesis of heparan sulfate chains, differential alterations in transcription depending on the presence or not of metastasis affected genes involved in the modification of uronic acid (epimerization and 2-O sulfation), and some isoforms responsible for sulfation of glucosamine (NDST1, HS6ST1). Moreover, in RSCRCs differences were preferentially found in the expression of genes involved in C6 and C3 sulfation of glucosamine, but not in NDSTs or SULFs. Finally, synthesis of chondroitin sulfate showed some alterations, which affected various steps, including polimerization and the modification of chains, but the main variations dependent on the presence of metastases were epimerization and 6C sulfation; however, when compared with RSCRCs, the essential divergences affected polymerization of the chains and the 6C sulfation of the galactosamine residue. Conclusions We evidenced alterations in the expression of HSPGs, including the expression of cell surface core proteins, many glycosiltransferases and some enzymes that modify the GAG chains in LSCRCs, but this was dependent on the metastatic nature of the tumor. Some of these alterations are shared with RSCRCs, while others, focused on specific gene groups, are dependent on tumor localization

La tribuna vacante: Eduardo Nicol y la retórica filosófica tras Ortega

This article examines how the exiled thinker Eduardo Nicol, in order to fill the vacant rostrum left by the philosopher-orator José Ortega y Gasset, elaborated the emerging contemporary problem of the relationship between rhetoric and philosophy. This question concerns both the what and the what-for of philosophy. Is there a rhetorical zero degree in thinking? And if it exists, will it be the optimum degree as  regards the social goal of philosophy? Nicol answered (1) by advancing on the phenomenological semiotics of Husserl (and Heidegger) to establish in human communication the simultaneous constitution of expression, meaning, and objectivity; and (2) by renouncing Ortega’s rhetorical brilliance as a paradigm of philosophical influence on culture. Yet in the first way Nicol did not draw all the consequences of his expressionism; in the second, he had to admit a rhetorical norm somewhat different from the zero degree, since humanity was in danger. Nicol’s case, in dialogue with all tendencies ofcontemporary philosophy, reasserts the central place that semiotics holds among them.

Computer simulation of vapor-liquid equilibria of linear dipolar fluids: Departures from the principle of corresponding states

    Get PDF
Liquid-vapor equilibrium of linear dipolar fluids has been determined by using the Gibbs ensemble simulation technique. Several elongations and values of the dipole moment were considered. Dipole moment increases the critical temperature and affects slightly the critical density and pressure. Compressibility factor at the critical point decreases as the dipole moment of the molecule increases. Dipole moment provokes deviations from the principle of corresponding states. It is shown that the temperature-density coexistence curve is broadened and that the slope of the vapor pressure curve increases with increasing dipole moment. We propose a new way of reducing the dipole moment so that the increase of the critical temperature becomes almost independent on the molecular elongation. We have also obtained the vapor-liquid equilibrium of models having both a dipole and a quadrupole moment. The obtained data were used to describe the behavior of some relatively complex fluids, namely, 1,1,1-trifluoroethane and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol. Good agreement for coexistence densities and pressures was obtained. The results presented in this work for linear dipolar fluids along with previous work on linear quadrupolar fluids provide a very comprehensive view of the effect of polar forces on the vapor-liquid equilibrium of linear fluids

Purpose: To evaluate efficacy, safety, and stability of Ferrara-type intrastromal corneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation for visual rehabilitation in pediatric patients with keratoconus. Methods: This study included patients with keratoconus aged 18 years or younger who had received Ferrara-type ICRS implantation. The uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities, residual refractive errors, and root mean square for coma-like aberration were recorded preoperatively and at 6 months, 1, 3, and 5 years postoperatively. Results: One hundred eighteen eyes of 88 patients (mean age 16.1 ± 1.89; range 10–18) were studied. All patients were examined at a 6-month follow-up after ICRS implantation, and at the 12-, 36-, and 60-month follow-ups, 97, 71, and 23 eyes were evaluated, respectively. Mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (logarithm of minimum angle of resolution) changed from 0.67 ± 0.37 preoperatively to 0.37 ± 0.30, 6 months after ICRS implantation (P < 0.0001). Mean corrected distance visual acuity increased in turn from 0.19 ± 0.15 to 0.10 ± 0.12 (P < 0.0001). The percentage of eyes with a refractive cylinder ≤2.00 D increased from 30.5% before surgery to 70.3% 6 months later, and the root mean square for corneal coma-like aberration showed a statistically significant decrease (P < 0.001). At the follow-up visits, refractive and visual values remained stable compared with those of the 6-month visit. Conclusions: Our long-term results suggest that Ferrara-type ICRS implantation is a safe, effective, and stable procedure for restoring vision in pediatric patients with keratoconus

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term outcomes of femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (Femto-LASIK) to correct residual astigmatism after deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK). Methods: This retrospective case series study included 10 eyes that underwent Femto-LASIK after a DALK. The refractive error, uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, thinnest corneal thickness (TCT), and central corneal thickness (CCT) were registered. The postoperative follow-up ranged between 36 and 60 months. Results: All surgeries were uneventful, with no intra- or postoperative complications. The mean UDVA (Snellen scale) rose from 0.13 ± 0.05 to 0.47 ± 0.15 six months after Femto-LASIK (p < 0.001). All cases experienced a significant improvement in UDVA. None of the eyes lost lines of CDVA, and seven eyes (70%) improved the CDVA compared to preoperative values. The refractive cylinder changed from a preoperative value of −3.88 ± 1.00 D to −0.93 ± 0.39 six months after Femto-LASIK (p < 0.0001). In eight eyes (80%), the UDVA and refractive outcomes remained stable at postoperative follow-up visits. In contrast, one eye experienced a refractive regression over the follow-up. TCT and CCT were stable at the different postoperative follow-up visits. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that Femto-LASIK might safely and effectively corrects residual astigmatism after DALK. Despite these encouraging results, further long-term studies, including a larger number of cases, are required to confirm the safety of the procedure. The refractive stability in eyes with prior RK might be lower than for other DALK indications.Depto. de Optometría y VisiónFac. de Óptica y OptometríaTRUEpu
