Comparative histology of the human and teleost fish thymus / Histologia Comparativa de timo de humanos e peixes teleósteos

Thymus is considered a key component of the vertebrates’ immune system. It is an organ that is only found in these animals whose development may be accompanied through the evolutionary scale, being considered as a facilitator and regulator in the interaction of lymphoid cells and lymphoid organs. In this study not only a morphological but also functional homology were demonstrated, in that it affects the immune system, of the humans and teleost fish thymus. The material of study was composed of the thymus tissue samples of humans who were donated by the Department of Pathology of Hospital Parmenio Piñero, Buenos Aires Argentina belonging to two patients with ages between 6 and 8 years, as well as specimens of fish from different origins. The thymic tissue samples were submitted to histological analysis, immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. Through the data shown here it is possible to consider that, both in fish as in humans, there are two tracks in the modulation of the immune response, an afferent pathway that begins with the presentation of the antigen and an efferent pathway through which  the result of the lymphocytes, antibodies stimulation  or other effector mechanisms are canalized. In these two phases both in humans and in fish, a mixed population of lymphocytes, the differentiation of lymphocytes in the thymus and the T4 lymphocytes production, play a fundamental role in the success of the immune response. Keywords:

In this work we describe two neurofibromas in Betta splendens studied with optical microscopy, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. The specimen studied, that belonged to a private breeder, had marked abdominal distension, and was transferred for diagnosis to the Laboratory of Immunology and Pathology of Aquatic Organisms of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande – FURG. It was diagnosed as neurofibroma, positive for the antibody to protein S-100. With electronic microscopy, it showed signs of degeneration in some cells and contained mast cells (MC) regularly distributed in the neoplasm mass. With immunohistochemistry we confirmed the histogenesis of the neoplasm, in which there were two neurofibromas, and with electron microscopy we confirmed that the granular cells within the neoplastic tissue were MCs.En este trabajo describimos dos neurofibromas en Betta splendens estudiados con microscopía óptica, inmunohistoquímica y microscopía electrónica.

Efficient monocular pose estimation for complex 3D models

Trabajo presentado al ICRA celebrado en Seattle (US) del 26 al 30 de mayo de 2015.We propose a robust and efficient method to estimate the pose of a camera with respect to complex 3D textured models of the environment that can potentially contain more than 100, 000 points. To tackle this problem we follow a top down approach where we combine high-level deep network classifiers with low level geometric approaches to come up with a solution that is fast, robust and accurate. Given an input image, we initially use a pre-trained deep network to compute a rough estimation of the camera pose. This initial estimate constrains the number of 3D model points that can be seen from the camera viewpoint. We then establish 3D-to-2D correspondences between these potentially visible points of the model and the 2D detected image features. Accurate pose estimation is finally obtained from the 2D-to-3D correspondences using a novel PnP algorithm that rejects outliers without the need to use a RANSAC strategy, and which is between 10 and 100 times faster than other methods that use it. Two real experimentsdealing with very large and complex 3D models demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach. This work has been partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under projects ERANet Chistera project ViSen PCIN-2013-047, PAU+ DPI2011-27510 and ROBOT-INT-COOP DPI2013-42458-P, and by the EU project ARCAS FP7-ICT-2011-28761.Peer Reviewe

Amyloid proteins are proteic groups that comprise a superfamily of apolipoproteins, highly conserved in vertebrates, being involved in the modulation of numerous immune responses during infections, injuries or stress. In this study, the yellow clam Amarilladesma mactroides was used as an invertebrate model in the search for amyloid protein deposits in their tissues. Adult specimens of this bivalve were collected from the beach and transported to the Laboratory of Immunology and Pathology of Aquatic Organisms - LIPOA at the Federal University of Rio Grande – FURG. Their tissues were sectioned and stained either with Hematoxylin and Eosin, and examined using light microscopy, or with Congo Red and analyzed under polarized light microscopy. Congo Red stain revealed the presence of amyloid proteins in the foot and digestive glands of the yellow clam. The techniques used proved to be appropriate for this species and evidenced a complementary role of amyloid proteins in the immune response, indicating that they are useful as a marker for the innate immune system and health of invertebrates. The ability to assess the immunological condition can provide information related to the cultivation of emerging species for aquaculture.

Effect of Physiotherapeutic Interventions on Biomarkers of Neuropathic Pain: A Systematic Review of Preclinical Literature.

    Get PDF
The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the effects of physiotherapeutic interventions on biomarkers of neuropathic pain in preclinical models of peripheral neuropathic pain (PNP). The search was performed in Pubmed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane, Cinhal, Psycinfo, Scopus, Medline, and Science Direct. Studies evaluating any type of physiotherapy intervention for PNP (systemic or traumatic) were included. Eighty-one articles were included in this review. The most common PNP model was chronic constriction injury, and the most frequently studied biomarkers were related to neuro-immune processes. Exercise therapy and Electro-acupuncture were the 2 most frequently studied physiotherapy interventions while acupuncture and joint mobilization were less frequently examined. Most physiotherapeutic interventions modulated the expression of biomarkers related to neuropathic pain. Whereas the results seem promising; they have to be considered with caution due to the high risk of bias of included studies and high heterogeneity of the type and anatomical localization of biomarkers reported. The review protocol is registered on PROSPERO (CRD42019142878). Perspective This article presents the current evidence about physiotherapeutic interventions on biomarkers of neuropathic pain in preclinical models of peripheral neuropathic pain. Existing findings are reviewed, and relevant data are provided on the effectiveness of each physiotherapeutic modality, as well as its certainty of evidence and clinical applicability.post-print761 K

    Get PDF
Workers in the transportation industry are at greater risk of an incorrect diet and sedentary behavior. The aim of our study was to characterize a population of professional bus drivers with regard to clinical and demographic variables, lipid profile, and the presence of cardiovascular risk factors. Data from 659 interstate bus drivers collected retrospectively, including anthropometric characteristics, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, meatoscopy, and audiometry. All participants were male, with a mean age of 41.7 ± 6.9 years, weight of 81.4 ± 3.3 kg, and BMI 27.2 ± 3.3 Kg/m2; the mean abdominal and neck circumferences were 94.4 ± 8.6 cm and 38.9 ± 2.2  cm; 38.2% of the sample was considered hypertensive; mean HDL cholesterol was 47.9 ± 9.5 mg/dL, mean triglyceride level was 146.3 ± 87.9 mg/dL, and fasting glucose was above 100 mg/dL in 249 subjects (39.1%). Drivers exhibited reduced audiometric hearing at 4–8 kHz, being all sensorineural hearing loss. The clinical characterization of a young male population of interstate bus drivers revealed a high frequency of cardiovascular risk factors, as obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia, as well as contributing functional characteristics, such as a low-intensity activity, sedentary behavior, long duration in a sitting position, and high-calorie diet, which lead to excessive weight gain and associated comorbidities
