    Reduction of Cadmium Availability to Tobacco ( Nicotiana tabacum ) Plants using Soil Amendments in Low Cadmium-contaminated Agricultural Soils: A Pot Experiment

    Cadmium (Cd) concentration in field-grown tobacco leaves usually ranges from < 0.5 to 5mgCdkg-1 dry matter (DM). Reducing bioavailability of soil Cd by adding amendments to the soil could be suitable to mitigate Cd uptake by tobacco plants. However, little is known on the effect of inorganic amendments on agricultural soils with low Cd concentrations. Therefore, we performed a pot experiment with tobacco plants that were grown during 56days in two neutral to alkaline agricultural soils with low total Cd concentrations (soil 1=0.4, soil 2=0.7mgkg-1). Both soils were amended or not with 1 or 5% of sepiolite, zeolite, hydroxyapatite and apatite II™. Major and trace elements were measured in mid-stalk position leaves. Soil metals were measured in a DTPA soil extraction to assess the effect of the amendments on metal bioavailability. Some amendments significantly reduced Cd concentration in tobacco leaves, but the effect differed between the two soils tested. In soil 1, the use of zeolite at the 1% dose was the most efficient, reducing the average Cd concentration from 0.6 to 0.4mgkg-1. In soil 2, the 5% hydroxyapatite treatment led to the maximal reduction in Cd concentration (50%), with an average final Cd concentration in leaves of 0.7mgkg-1 (control: 1.5mgkg-1). There was a dose effect for some amendments in soil 2 (containing more Cd), suggesting a reduced efficiency of the amendment at the lowest addition rate. DTPA extractable Cd and Zn measured at the end of the pot experiment were correlated to the metal concentrations in tobacco leaves suggesting that (1) the reduction in leaf Cd concentration was due to a reduction in metal availability to tobacco and (2) DTPA may be a suitable extractant to estimate Cd availability to tobacco plants in these two soils. In addition, a batch experiment was performed with the same soils to test a larger number of amendments, including the four tested in the pot experiment. Results were compared to those of the pot experiment to assess whether a batch experiment may predict the efficiency of an amendment on a given soil. It gave results compatible with those from the pot experiment except for the sepiolite and highlighted the broad range of potential amendments available for heavy metal remediation in crop plant

    Structure of worldwide populations of Lasioderma serricorne (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) as revealed by amplified fragment length polymorphism profiles

    The cigarette beetle Lasioderma serricorne through transportation affects the infestation of stored tobacco. Using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), DNA polymorphisms were assessed in 16 populations of L. serricorne collected from 15 countries. The dendrograms constructed from profile distance matrices revealed well-supported colony clusters. There was no clear clustering as a function of the geographic origin of the samples. The results suggest extensive insect dispersal among geographical regions due to movement of infested commodities worldwide. This first AFLP population study of a stored-product insect demonstrates the potential of AFLP for distinguishing L. serricorne population

    Do riverine barriers, history or introgression shape the genetic structuring of a common shrew (Sorex araneus) population?

    The common shrew (Sorex araneus) is subdivided into numerous chromosome races. The Valais and Cordon chromosome races meet and hybridize at a mountain river in Les Houches (French Alps). Significant genetic structuring was recently reported among populations found on the Valais side of this hybrid zone. In this paper, a phylogenetic analysis and partial Mantel tests are used to investigate the patterns and causes of this structuring. A total of 185 shrews were trapped at 12 localities. All individuals were typed for nine microsatellite loci. Although several mountain rivers are found in the study area, riverine barriers do not have a significant influence on gene flow. Partial Mantel tests show that our result is caused by the influence of the hybrid zone with the Cordon race. The geographical patterns of this structuring are discussed in the context of the contact zone, which appears to extend up to a group of two rivers. The glacier they originate from is known to have cut the Arve valley as recently as 1818. The recent history of this glacier, its moraine and possibly rivers, may therefore be linked to the history of this hybrid zone

    Over time, anthropogenic activities have led to severe cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) pollution in several environments. Plants inhabiting metal(loid)-contaminated areas should be able to sequester and detoxify these toxic elements as soon as they enter roots and leaves. We postulated here that an important role in protecting plants from excessive metal(loid) accumulation and toxicity might be played by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. In fact, human exploitation of plant material derived from Cd- and As-polluted environments may lead to a noxious intake of these toxic elements; in particular, a possible source of Cd and As for humans is given by cigarette and cigar smoke. We investigated the role of AM fungus Funneliformis mosseae (T.H. Nicolson & Gerd.) C. Walker & A. Schussler in protecting Nicotiana tabacum L (cv. Petit Havana) from the above-mentioned metal(loid) stress. Our findings proved that the AM symbiosis is effective in increasing the plant tissue content of the antioxidant glutathione (GSH), in influencing the amount of metal(loid)-induced chelators as phytochelatins, and in reducing the Cd and As content in leaves and roots of adult tobacco plants. These results might also prove useful in improving the quality of commercial tobacco, thus reducing the risks to human health due to inhalation of toxic elements contained in smoking product

    Este artigo buscou revisar a literatura sobre os benefícios do uso de Inibidor do Cotransportador de Sódio-Glicose 2 (SGLT2) no tratamento de pacientes com Insuficiência Cardíaca com Fração de Ejeção Reduzida (ICFEr). A ICFEr é caracterizada pela fração de ejeção ventricular esquerda menor que 40%, o que altera forma, função e tamanho da musculatura afetada, além de provocar importantes efeitos sistêmicos no organismo. Essa patologia está associada a internações, morbidade e mortalidade importantes, com ônus aos sistemas de saúde e à qualidade de vida dos portadores da doença. Nesse contexto, o uso de inibidores de SGLT2 mostrou-se benéfico para o tratamento da síndrome abordada, por mecanismo multifatorial que ainda precisa ser mais detalhadamente elucidado. Além da redução da mortalidade e das hospitalizações com o uso dos fármacos mencionados na ICFEr, seus benefícios se estendem à função e à estrutura cardíaca, à hemodinâmica e a alterações de marcadores laboratoriais importantes

    A microsatellite study in the Łęgucki Młyn/Popielno hybrid zone reveals no genetic differentiation between two chromosome races of the common shrew (Sorex araneus)

    This study investigated a chromosome hybrid zone between two chromosomal races of the common shrew (Sorex araneus). Gene flow and genetic structure of the hybrid zone, located in the northeast of Poland, were studied using seven polymorphic autosomal microsatellite loci (L9, L14, L33, L45, L67, L68, L97) and a Y-linked microsatellite locus (L8Y). Seventy-five animals (46 of the Łęgucki Młyn race and 29 of the Popielno race) from nine different localities were examined and the data were analyzed using hierarchical AMOVA and F-statistic. The studied microsatellite loci and races (divided into nine geographical populations) were characterized by observed heterozygosity (HO), expected heterozygosities within (HS), and between (HT) populations, inbreeding coefficient (FIS), fixation index (FST), and average allelic richness (A). We found that genetic structuring within and between the two chromosome races were weak and non-significant. This finding and unconstrained gene flow between the races indicates a high level of migration within the Łęgucki Młyn/Popielno hybrid zone, suggesting that evolutionarily important genetic structuring does not occur in interracial zones where races which are not genetically distinct come into contact

    Geographical patterns of deep mitochondrial differentiation in widespread Malagasy reptiles

    Using sequences of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene, we reconstructed the phylogeography of six widely distributed Malagasy reptiles: two gekkonid lizard species, Phelsuma lineata and Hemidactylus mercatorius; two chameleons, the Calumma brevicorne complex, and Furcifer lateralis; and two skinks, Trachylepis gravenhorstii and Trachylepis elegans. Genetic differentiation among major haplotype lineages was high and in some cases indicates or confirms species status of the divergent populations. Maximum uncorrected sequence divergences were between 2.2% and 8.3% within the various species or species complexes. Haplotype lineages were exclusive to geographic regions, except in the commensal H. mercatorius where in three anthropogenic habitats coexistence of haplotype lineages was observed, possibly due to human translocation. The eastward flowing rivers Mangoro and Mananara may represent barriers to gene flow in the case of three species each. Some species sampled from humid eastern and arid western Madagascar showed no differentiation between populations from these two regions; instead the pattern observed was in several cases more concordant with a differentiation along a north-south axis
