Factor analytic reduction of the carotid-cardiac baroreflex parameters
An accepted method for measuring the responsiveness of the carotid-cardiac baroreflex to arterial pressure changes is to artificially stimulate the baroreceptors in the neck. This is accomplished by using a pressurized neck cuff which constricts and distends the carotid artery and subsequently stimulates the baroreceptors. Nine physiological responses to this type of stimulation are quantified and used as indicators of the baroreflex. Thirty male humans between the ages 27 and 46 underwent the carotid-cardiac baroreflex test. The data for the nine response parameters were analyzed by principle component factor analysis. The results of this analysis indicated that 93 percent of the total variance across all nine parameters could be explained in four dimensions. Examination of the factor loadings following an orthogonal rotation of the principle components indicated four well defined dimensions. The first two dimensions reflected location points for R-R interval and carotid distending pressure respectively. The third dimension was composed of measures reflecting the gain of the reflex. The fourth dimension was the ratio of the resting R-R interval to R-R interval during simulated hypertension. The data suggests that the analysis of all nine baroreflex parameters is redundant
Ethnoontology: Ways of worldâbuilding across cultures
This article outlines a program of ethnoontology that brings together empirical research in the ethnosciences with ontological debates in philosophy. First, we survey empirical evidence from heterogeneous cultural contexts and disciplines. Second, we propose a model of crossâcultural relations between ontologies beyond a simple divide between universalist and relativist models. Third, we argue for an integrative model of ontology building that synthesizes insights from different fields such as biological taxonomy, cognitive science, cultural anthropology, and political ecology. We conclude by arguing that a program of ethnoontology provides philosophers both with insights about traditional issues such as debates about natural kinds and with novel strategies for connecting philosophy with pressing global issues such as the conservation of local environments and the selfâdetermination of Indigenous communities

Intermittent gravity: How much, how often, how long?
Continuous exposure to gravity may not be necessary to prevent the deconditioning effects of microgravity. It is not known, however, what the minimum gravity (G) exposure reguirements are, whether they vary for different physiological systems, or whether passive Gz (gravity in the head-to-toe vector) or activity in a G field is more effective in preventing deconditioning. It is also not known what the optimal characteristics of the G stimulus should be in terms of amplitude, duration, and frequency. To begin to address these questions, a 4-day -6 deg head-down bed rest (HDBR) study was conducted. Nine males (aged 30-50 yr) were subjected, over a period of seven months, to four different +1 Gz exposure protocols (periodic standing or controlled walking each for a total of 2 or 4 hr/day in individual 15-min doses), plus a control (0 Gz) of continuous HDBR. The study consisted of one ambulatory control day, 4 full days of -6 deg HDBR, and a recovery day when subjects were released at the end of HDBR after completion of tests. A battery of tests was selected and standardized in order to evaluate the known early responses to HDBR. Dependent variables of interest included orthostatic tolerance (30 min at 60 deg head-up tilt) and hemodynamics during head-up tilt, peak oxygen consumption (VO2(sub peak)) plasma volume (PV), and urinary calcium (Ca). The results were as follows: 4 hr standing completely prevented and 2 hr walking partially prevented post-HDBR orthostatic intolerance. Walking at 3 mi/hr for 4 hr/day provided no additional benefit. Intermittent walking attenuated, but did not prevent, the decrease in VO2(sub peak). Both 4 hr conditions showed less PV loss by the end of HDBR; both 2 hr conditions were without effect. Both 2 and 4 hr walking essentially prevented urinary Ca excretion and were more effective than standing. It is concluded that different physiological systems benefit differentially from passive +1 Gz or activity in +1 Gz, and the intensity of the stimulus may be an important contributing factor
The Implications of Insurance Status on Presentation, Surgical Management and Mortality among Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients in Indiana
Background
The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program seeks to reduce health care disparities by providing uninsured and underinsured women access to screening mammograms. The objective of this study is to identify the differences in presentation, surgical management, and mortality among nonmetastatic uninsured patients diagnosed through Indiana's Breast and Cervical Cancer Program compared with patients with private and government (Medicare or Medicaid) insurance.
Methods
Study data were obtained using the Indiana state cancer registry and Indiana's Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. Women aged 50 to 64 with an index diagnosis of stage 0 to III breast cancer from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2013, were included in the study. Bivariate intergroup analysis was conducted. Kaplan-Meier estimates between insurance types were compared using the log rank test. All-cause mortality was evaluated using a mixed effects model.
Results
The groups differed significantly for sociodemographic and clinical variables. Uninsured Indiana Breast and Cervical Cancer Program patients presented with later disease stage (P < .001) and had the highest overall mortality (hazard ratio 2.2, PâŻ=âŻ.003). Surgical management only differed among stage III patients (PâŻ=âŻ.012).
Conclusion
To improve insurance-based disparities in Indiana, implementation of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program in conjunction with expansion of insurance coverage to vulnerable low-income populations need to be optimized
The Effects of School Desegregation on Crime
One of the most striking features of crime in America is its disproportionate concentration in disadvantaged, racially segregated communities, which has long raised concern that segregation itself may contribute to criminal behavior. Yet little is known about whether government efforts to reduce segregation can reduce crime. We address this question by studying the most important large-scale policy to reduce segregation in American life - court-ordered school desegregation. Our research design exploits variation across large urban school districts in the timing of when they were subject to local Federal court orders to desegregate. We find that for black youth, homicide victimization declines by around 25 percent when court orders are implemented; homicide arrests decline significantly as well. We also find evidence for spillover effects on other age and race groups, consistent with data indicating a sizable amount of offending across groups and with the fact that offending by different groups is also linked through the police budget constraint. Economic models for a "market for offenses" suggest the influence of this second mechanism should attenuate over time as victims respond to a shift in the supply of offenses by reducing investments in crime prevention. Consistent with this theory, we find police spending declines several years after court desegregation orders are enacted. The only detectable life-course-persistent effects are found among birth cohorts that attended desegregated schools.
Retrospective comparisons of competing demographic models give clarity from âmessyâ management on a Scottish grouse moor
Retrospective comparison of predictive models that describe competing hypotheses regarding system function can shed light on regulatory mechanisms within the framework of adaptive resource management. We applied this approach to a 28-year study of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scotica) in Scotland, with the aims of reducing uncertainty regarding important drivers of grouse population dynamics, and of evaluating the efficacy of using seasonal versus annual model assessments. We developed three sets of models that predicted pre-breeding and post-breeding grouse density, matching the timing of grouse counts on the ground. We updated conditions and management through time in the spirit of a real-time, adaptive management program and used a Bayesian model weight updating process to compare model predictions with empirical grouse densities. The first two model sets involved single annual updates from either pre-breeding or post-breeding counts; the third set was updated twice a year. Each model set comprised seven models representing increasingly complex hypotheses regarding potentially important drivers of grouse: the baseline model included weather and parasite effects on productivity, shooting losses and density-dependent overwinter survival; subsequent models incorporated the effect of habitat gain/loss (HAB), control of non-protected predators (NPP) and predation by protected hen harriers (Circus cyaneus, HH) and buzzards (Buteo buteo, BZ). The weight of evidence was consistent across model sets, settling within 10 years on the harrier (NPP + HH), buzzard (NPP + HH + BZ) and buzzard + habitat (NPP + HH + BZ + HAB) models, and downgrading the baseline + habitat, non-protected predator, and non-protected predator + habitat models. By the end of the study only the buzzard and buzzard + habitat models retained substantial weights, emphasizing the dynamical complexity of the system. Habitat inclusion failed to improve model predictions, implying that over the period of this study habitat quantity was unimportant in determining grouse abundance. Comparing annually and biannually assessed model sets, the main difference was in the baseline model, whose weight increased or remained stable when assessed annually, but collapsed when assessed biannually. Our adaptive modeling approach is suitable for many ecological situations in which a complex interplay of factors makes experimental manipulation difficult

Measuring Trust
We combine two experiments and a survey to measure trust and trustworthinessâtwo key components of social capital. Standard attitudinal survey questions about trust predict trustworthy behavior in our experiments much better than they predict trusting behavior. Trusting behavior in the experiments is predicted by past trusting behavior outside of the experiments. When individuals are closer socially, both trust and trustworthiness rise. Trustworthiness declines when partners are of different races or nationalities. High status individuals are able to elicit more trustworthiness in others.Economic
The chemical composition of red giants in 47 Tucanae I: Fundamental parameters and chemical abundance patterns
Context: The study of chemical abundance patterns in globular clusters is of
key importance to constrain the different candidates for intra-cluster
pollution of light elements. Aims: We aim at deriving accurate abundances for a
large range of elements in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104) to add new
constraints to the pollution scenarios for this particular cluster, expanding
the range of previously derived element abundances. Methods: Using tailored 1D
LTE atmospheric models together with a combination of equivalent width
measurements, LTE, and NLTE synthesis we derive stellar parameters and element
abundances from high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra of 13 red giant
stars near the tip of the RGB. Results: We derive abundances of a total 27
elements (O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr,
Mo, Ru, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, Dy). Departures from LTE were taken into
account for Na, Al and Ba. We find a mean [Fe/H] = and
in good agreement with previous studies. The
remaining elements show good agreement with the literature, but the inclusion
of NLTE for Al has a significant impact on the behaviour of this key element.
Conclusions: We confirm the presence of an Na-O anti-correlation in 47 Tucanae
found by several other works. Our NLTE analysis of Al shifts the [Al/Fe] to
lower values, indicating that this may be overestimated in earlier works. No

Differential effects of partial and complete loss of TREM2 on microglial injury response and tauopathy.
Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common form of dementia, is characterized by the abnormal accumulation of amyloid plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau aggregates, as well as microgliosis. Hemizygous missense variants in Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells 2 (TREM2) are associated with elevated risk for developing late-onset AD. These variants are hypothesized to result in loss of function, mimicking TREM2 haploinsufficiency. However, the consequences of TREM2 haploinsufficiency on tau pathology and microglial function remain unknown. We report the effects of partial and complete loss of TREM2 on microglial function and tau-associated deficits. In vivo imaging revealed that microglia from aged TREM2-haploinsufficient mice show a greater impairment in their injury response compared with microglia from aged TREM2-KO mice. In transgenic mice expressing mutant human tau, TREM2 haploinsufficiency, but not complete loss of TREM2, increased tau pathology. In addition, whereas complete TREM2 deficiency protected against tau-mediated microglial activation and atrophy, TREM2 haploinsufficiency elevated expression of proinflammatory markers and exacerbated atrophy at a late stage of disease. The differential effects of partial and complete loss of TREM2 on microglial function and tau pathology provide important insights into the critical role of TREM2 in AD pathogenesis
