Selecionamos um jornal de circulação envolvendo todo mês de julho, capturando as informações sobre os atletas “sergipanamericanos que participaram dos Jogos. Percebe-se um avanço do estudo da mídia no âmbito da Educação Física e exemplos de estudos e pesquisas que vêm sendo desenvolvidos em algumas universidades (UFSC entre outras). Há uma discussão pertinente em congressos como o CONBRACE e o INTERCOM e revistas, como Motrivivência e RBCE .Rede Cede

    Heterologous expression of Brucella abortus GroEL heat-shock protein in Lactococcus lactis

    BACKGROUND: Brucella abortus is a facultative intracellular pathogen that mainly infects cattle and humans. Current vaccines rely on live attenuated strains of B. abortus, which can revert to their pathogenic status and thus are not totally safe for use in humans. Therefore, the development of mucosal live vaccines using the food-grade lactic acid bacterium, Lactococcus lactis, as an antigen delivery vector, is an attractive alternative and a safer vaccination strategy against B. abortus. Here, we report the construction of L. lactis strains genetically modified to produce B. abortus GroEL heat-shock protein, a candidate antigen, in two cellular locations, intracellular or secreted. RESULTS: Only the secreted form of GroEL was stably produced in L. lactis, suggesting a detrimental effect of GroEL protein when intracellularly produced in this bacterium. Only trace amounts of mature GroEL were detected in the supernatant fraction of induced lactococcal cultures, and the GroEL precursor remained stacked in the cell fraction. Attempts to raise the secretion yields were made, but even when GroEL was fused to a synthetic propeptide, secretion of this antigen was not improved. CONCLUSION: We found that L. lactis is able to produce, and to secrete, a stable form of GroEL into the extracellular medium. Despite the low secretion efficiency of GroEL, which suggest that this antigen interacts with the cell envelope of L. lactis, secretion seems to be the best way to achieve both production and protein yields, regardless of cellular location.     Measurements of CFTR-Mediated Cl- Secretion in Human Rectal Biopsies Constitute a Robust Biomarker for Cystic Fibrosis Diagnosis and Prognosis

    BACKGROUND: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is caused by ∼1,900 mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene encoding for a cAMP-regulated chloride (Cl(-)) channel expressed in several epithelia. Clinical features are dominated by respiratory symptoms, but there is variable organ involvement thus causing diagnostic dilemmas, especially for non-classic cases. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To further establish measurement of CFTR function as a sensitive and robust biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of CF, we herein assessed cholinergic and cAMP-CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion in 524 freshly excised rectal biopsies from 118 individuals, including patients with confirmed CF clinical diagnosis (n=51), individuals with clinical CF suspicion (n=49) and age-matched non-CF controls (n=18). Conclusive measurements were obtained for 96% of cases. Patients with "Classic CF", presenting earlier onset of symptoms, pancreatic insufficiency, severe lung disease and low Shwachman-Kulczycki scores were found to lack CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion (<5%). Individuals with milder CF disease presented residual CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion (10-57%) and non-CF controls show CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion ≥ 30-35% and data evidenced good correlations with various clinical parameters. Finally, comparison of these values with those in "CF suspicion" individuals allowed to confirm CF in 16/49 individuals (33%) and exclude it in 28/49 (57%). Statistical discriminant analyses showed that colonic measurements of CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion are the best discriminator among Classic/Non-Classic CF and non-CF groups. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Determination of CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion in rectal biopsies is demonstrated here to be a sensitive, reproducible and robust predictive biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of CF.     Predictors of high-quality cord blood units

    BACKGROUNDAnalysis of umbilical cord blood (UCB) transplants shows a correlation between engraftment and total number of infused cells. Thus, it is worth evaluating what maternal and neonatal characteristics and collection techniques may affect the quality of UCB units. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODSA cross-sectional study was performed with 7897 donors sequentially selected in three health care institutions in Brazil from October 2004 to March 2012, in which both quantitative and qualitative approaches were applied. All donors were considered suitable for cord blood collection. RESULTSThe maternal and neonatal characteristics and techniques of collection that influenced the total number of nucleated cells (TNCsp<0.001) were type of delivery, newborn weight and sex, and institution of UCB collection. The TNC count was associated with gestational age (p=0.008), type of delivery (p<0.001), newborn sex (p<0.001), newborn weight (p<0.001), and UCB collection technique (p=0.003). Center B presented the largest number of nucleated cells in its results (p<0.001), followed by Center A (p=0.001). Other characteristics, such as maternal age, were analyzed but were not relevant for the nucleated cell number.     Prevalence and etiology of anemia in the elderly: a full review

    Purpuses: to describe the prevalence and etiology of anemia in the elderly in the original studies published. Methods: systematic review of articles published between 2008 and 2013, the electronic databases PubMed and Science Direct. Using descriptors predetermined english, covering articles that used: “anemia”, “elderly”, “etiology”, used in combination. Results: was founded 77 articles. After filtering process were selected 18 studies that presented results of prevalence and etiology of anemia in the elderly. Conclusion: there was a wide range in the prevalence of anemia (5.5% to 62.6%), as well as the etiology. Hospitalized and institutionalized elderly showed a high prevalence of anemia with increased risk for mortality. Non-institutionalized elderly constituted the majority of the target population and the main cause of anemia was chronic and unexplained. The etiology of anemia found in these surveys included the three main causes of anemia in the elderly, which is by nutritional deficiencies, chronic and unexplained anemia, confirming this multifactorial disease.Objetivos: Descrever a prevalência e a etiologia da anemia em idosos nos estudos originais publicados. Métodos: Revisão integrativa de artigos publicados entre 2008 e 2013, nas bases de dados eletrônicos PubMed e Science Direct. Utilização de descritores pré-determinados em inglês, abrangendo artigos que utilizassem: “anemia”, “elderly”, “etiology”, usados em combinação. Resultados: Foram encontrados 77 artigos. Após processo de filtragem selecionou-se 18 estudos que apresentavam resultados da prevalência e etiologia da anemia em idosos. Conclusão: Observou-se grande amplitude nas prevalências de anemias (5,5% a 62,6%), assim como a etiologia. Idosos hospitalizados e institucionalizados apresentaram elevadas prevalências de anemia com aumento para risco de mortalidade. Idosos não institucionalizados constituíram a maior parte da população alvo e nesses, a principal etiologia da anemia foi doença crônica e inexplicada. A etiologia da anemia encontrada nestas pesquisas contemplou as três principais causas de anemia nos idosos, quais seja por deficiências nutricionais, doenças crônicas e anemia inexplicada, confirmando a multifatorialidade desta doença

    Uso de amêndoas de baru (Dypterix alata) para remoção de Ni(ii) em etanol combustível

    The present work describes the sorption potential of Dypterix alata (baru) for removal of Ni(II) in hydrous ethanol. Infrared spectroscopy was used for elucidating possible functional groups responsible for uptaking Ni(II). Sorption studies using Ni(II) standard solutions were carried out in batch experiments as functions of extraction time and pH solution. The Ni(II) was quantified before and after the removal experiments using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Furthermore, based on adsorption studies and adsorption isotherms applied to the Langmuir and Freundlich models, it was possible to verify that D. alata presents a high adsorption capacity. The results show that D. alata can be used for removing Ni(II) in ethanol solutions

    Fish oil consumption prevents glucose intolerance and hypercorticosteronemy in footshock-stressed rats

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Environmental stress plays an important role in the development of glucose intolerance influencing lipid and glucose metabolism through sympathetic nervous system, cytokines and hormones such as glucocorticoids, catecholamines and glucagon. Otherwise, fish oil prevents glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. Although the mechanisms involved are not fully understood, it is known that sympathetic and HPA responses are blunted and catecholamines and glucocorticoids concentrations can be modulated by fish consumption. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether fish oil, on a normal lipidic diet: 1) could prevent the effect of footshock-stress on the development of glucose intolerance; 2) modified adiponectin receptor and serum concentration; and 3) also modified TNF-α, IL-6 and interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels in adipose tissue and liver. The study was performed in thirty day-old male Wistar randomly assigned into four groups: no stressed (C) and stressed (CS) rats fed with control diet, and no stressed (F) and stressed (FS) rats fed with a fish oil rich diet. The stress was performed as a three daily footshock stress sessions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Body weight, carcass fat and protein content were not different among groups. FS presented a reduction on the relative weight of RET. Basal serum glucose levels were higher in CS and FS but 15 min after glucose load just CS remained with higher levels than other groups. Serum corticosterone concentration was increased in CS, this effect was inhibited in FS. However, 15 min after footshock-stress, corticosterone levels were similar among groups. IL-6 was increased in EPI of CS but fish oil consumption prevented IL-6 increase in FS. Similar levels of TNF-α and IL-10 in RET, EPI, and liver were observed among groups. Adipo R1 protein concentration was not different among groups. Footshock-stress did not modify AdipoR2 concentration, but fish oil diet increases AdipoR2 protein concentration.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Footshock-stress promotes glucose intolerance associated to corticosterone serum level and epididymal white adipose tissue IL-6 concentration increase. The fish oil consumption by stressed rats normalized the stress responses. These results suggested that fish oil intake could be useful to minimize or prevent the development of diseases associated to the stress.</p

    Effect of Acidity Reduction and Anticaking Use on the Hygroscopic Behavior of Tamarind Pulp Powder

    The high acid content in tamarind pulp can inhibit consumer sensory acceptance of its products and cause problems during lyophilization, resulting in a powder with high hygroscopicity, and which is prone to caking due to its hydrophilic nature. Tamarind pulp, in turn, has great nutritional potential, and stands out in relation to other pulps because of its functional attributes that are under investigation due to its low glycemic index. This study sought to characterize tamarind pulp and the effects of acidity reduction on hygroscopic behavior. Tamarind pulp powder was evaluated by analyzing moisture content, hygroscopicity, degree of caking, and adsorption isotherms, by fitting experimental data to the GAB, BET, Henderson, and Oswin mathematical models. The results demonstrated that all tamarind powder treatments resulted in low moisture content and hygroscopicity values, but a high degree of caking. The GAB model represented the best fit to the adsorption isotherms, with coefficients of determination (R2) between 0.97 and 0.99 and average errors (E) < 5.67 %, presenting a type III behavior, characteristic of foods rich in sugar, and it is recommended to store this product in environments with a relative humidity below 60 %

    Importância do Gerenciamento de Rejeitos Radioativos na Iodoterapia

    Iodotherapy is one of the medicinal nuclear therapeutics that employs radioactive iodine as the radionuclide. This treatment, carried out in hospitals, requires radioprotection procedures to guard the patients, the medical team and the environment against contamination. A discussion regarding the application of this therapeutic shows the importance of implanting programs to manage radioactive residues which are generated in hospital units.Resumo: A iodoterapia é uma das terapêuticas da medicina nuclear que emprega como radionuclídeo o iodo radioativo. Esse tratamento, realizado em unidades de internação, exige procedimentos de radioproteção para prevenir contaminação de pacientes, equipe de saúde e meio ambiente.
